DIARY DATES
What’s on this autumn
The nights are already drawing in and holidays
may seem far away but it was good to see so many
of you at our two water-themed summer events. In
parti cular, the Business Club evening at SAIL on the
waterfront in Amsterdam was a great success – even
if it did take longer than we would have liked to
moor. Our own sailing event had to be postponed for
a week because of the weather. Unfortunately, fewer
people were able to take part but those who did had
a great time and enjoyed the race. You can check out
the photographs of both events on page 12.
I’ve also been on a business trip to London to check
out the latest trends in offices. We saw new concepts
developed by Regus and WeWork and visited
Chiswick Park, an office complex comparable in
size to the WTC, with around 4,000 workers. The
on-site facilities consisted largely of different bars
and cafes, but there was also a gym which some 80%
of the workforce actually use. In this context it was
AUTUMN
Christiaan Huijg, Managing Director
World Trade Center Amsterdam
interesting to see the comments of WTC workers on
page 6 about which facilities they miss. More variety
in terms of bars was perhaps top of the list but there
were also calls for a gym and a tropical swimming
pool. I have to wonder if here in the Netherlands we
are quite ready to stand under the shower next to our
colleagues and bosses after a work-out?
We are working on improving the use of space in
the I tower lobby next year. Law firm NautaDutilh
is moving out and we are taking advantage of the
change to redevelop the tower as a multi-tenant
complex. The focus will be on smaller, growing
companies and current WTC tenants who are
looking to expand are welcome to get in touch and
find out more about the options.
Our own move at the beginning of October to new
offices in the central hall will take us closer to the
heart of the WTC. Like everyone else, we have to
keep an eye on the costs and make sure we work
as efficiently as possible so the move is a sensible
one all round. We will, of course, organise drinks
so you can check out our office as well. Keep your
eye on the email for details.
FLUTE, JAZZ AND BRASS
Study for an MBA in the WTC
Is there really a university in the WTC? Yes,
there is. Webster University, the only accredited
American university in the Netherlands, has an
Amsterdam annex where you can study for an
MBA or other Master’s programme part time,
while forging ahead with your business career.
On October 10, Webster is holding an open day
This autumn’s lunchtime concerts offer something
for everyone. On October 9, the sound of
Emma Zoe Elkinson‘s flute will fill the central hall
accompanied by the rich sounds of viola, violin
and cello. Emma is Irish and a passionate and poetic
flute virtuoso who is at home both in classical
performance and Irish traditional music.
On November 3, swinging jazz will be centre
stage, featuring Nataly Masclé on vocals, Jean-
Louis van Damme on keyboards and Eric Timmerman
on bass. The trio have performed together
for years and produce a smooth, flexible
and intimate sound.
The traditional December concert takes place on
December 10 and will create a suitably festive atmosphere
with a brass quartet, led by Erwin ter
Bogt. The music will be a medley of old music,
jazz, pop and, of course, some Christmas tunes as
well. For more information:
BIG DATA
IS COMING
TO YOU
Everyone is talking about it but what actually
is Big Data, how can you use it and what does
it mean for your company? The WTC Amsterdam
Business Club is organising a special
event on November 10 to bring members up
to speed on the implications and opportunities
offered by Big Data. A panel of four keynote
speakers – who are still being finalised -
will be on hand to expand on their views and
answer questions. The session will end with
networking drinks, where you can meet the
panellists face to face.
Make a note in your diaries too about the
Business Club’s New Year drinks party on
January 27. Dutch central bank chairman
Klaas Knot is giving the keynote speech
about key issues facing the Dutch economy.
ALL CHANGE
AT I TOWER
The departure of law firm Nauta Dutilh from I Tower
next year means a lot of changes are on their way. WTC
Amsterdam has advanced plans to turn the tower into
a multi-tenant complex, focusing on smaller, growing
companies looking for upwards of 1,000 square metres.
The lobby is also being given a facelift and there will
be more emphasis on places to meet and have a coffee
and something to eat. People who are interested in
taking space in the revamped tower will be able to find
out more at the special marketing suite which will be
placed in the lobby from the end of September. The
suite is equipped with audio-visual equipment and can
seat up to eight people. I-TOREN.NL
Sculpture
with attitude
Showgirls, flower girls and queens... Karin van de Walle’s
striking ceramic female sculptures are currently adding
to the atmosphere in the central hall. Karin graduated
from the St Joost School of Art in Breda in 1984 and since then has
exhibited all over Europe. Her figures are a blend of all periods, countries
and cultures and are defined in part by their hair, their shoes or
their clothes. Karin says she is inspired by the avalanche of images and
impressions she gleans from the internet and is not afraid to mix in
classical sculptural themes. Some of her work also includes fertility
symbols and some figures even appear as angels.
YOUR GOOD HEALTH
Do you have neck cramps from craning your
neck at your computer? Or are you stiff from
tension ahead of a crucial presentation? The Os-
teopathy Health and Therapy Practice in A Tower
is a relative newcomer to the WTC, but is on
hand to deal with the typical problems which office
workers might experience.
Osteopathy is a manual therapy which aims to
increase mobility and restore the self-healing
abilities of the body. Complementary therapy
deals with all stress-related complaints, helping
patients get back to work more quickly.
Rouslan Akperov, who trained in Britain and
the Netherlands, and complementary therapist
Mouhabbat Iousoupova, who studied physiotherapy
in the Netherlands, can help you with
neck, back and arm pain, RSI and burnout, to
name just a few.
‘People who sit behind a desk get neck problems
and RSI,’ they say ‘Everyone knows they should
move, but just standing up from time to time is
not enough to feel good.’ The treatments are
covered by the Dutch health insurance system.
Sinterklaas
The nights are now drawing in and before we know
it, Sinterklaas will be upon us. The WTC Amsterdam
Sinterklaas party takes place on the afternoon
of Wednesday, December 2, and the children of
everyone who works in the complex are warmly
invited to attend. There will be lots of fun activities
to join in and all the Sinterklaas traditions, including
songs, pepernoten and Zwarte Piet! Sign up at
the Triple Ace information desk. And if you’d like
to volunteer to help out at the event, please contact
I don’t really like their clothes.’
It’s always an issue for any big deliveries.’
the restaurants. The choice is pretty limited.’
INTERVIEW
Mischa
Voogt
IS IN THE PEOPLE BUSINESS
The managing director of Michael Page in the Netherlands believes cvs
should be down-to-earth, shoes should be polished and work should be fun.
PHOTOGRAPHY: ANNE LAKEMAN
It is Friday morning in the main space in the Page-
Group’s offices in WTC Amsterdam. Last night
there was a company party, but any hangovers are
well hidden. The desks are manned and an international
crew of smartly dressed people in their
20s and 30s are checking screens and talking on
the phone.
‘This is a young person’s business,’ says Mischa
Voogt, gesturing across the room. ‘A few years
ago, a placement would take two or three months
but that has now shrunk to three weeks. The pace
and the pressure have increased a lot. This business
today requires people with a lot of energy.’
PageGroup is a global recruitment company with
a total workforce of some 5,000, 200 of whom
work in the Netherlands. The company specialises
in finance, HR, procurement and supply chain,
engineering, IT, sales and marketing, legal and
healthcare roles - both permanent and interim -
and has three separate units: Michael Page, Page
Executive and Page Personnel.
Mischa has been with the group since 2000,
working her way up the company ladder, and has
watched the huge increase in competition. ‘We
are all fishing in the same pond,’ Mischa says. ‘This
is a people business. Your product is your candidate.
We get a lot of cvs sent to us, but there are
not a lot of good, talented, well-educated people
out there looking for work. They’re already in a
job. We have to go out and find them and see if
they are open to change.’
MOBILITY
The recruitment industry in the Netherlands felt
the strain at the height of the recession as companies
froze vacancies and slashed budgets. The
recovery, she says, is now clearly visible. ‘There
has been an increase in management roles. Companies
are expanding again and there is more mobility.
People in good jobs are willing to switch.
There is movement again and this is good for us
as well as the economy.’
Around 50% of the Amsterdam branch placements
involve international roles. So what does she see
as the difference between the Dutch and the international
approach to finding and keeping a job?
Flexibility – working part-time or working from
home - is a big theme in the Dutch labour market,
Mischa points out. ‘It suits us. It is what we
Dutch like,’ she says. ‘But we have to explain this
culture to our international clients. In particular,
new companies in the WTC may ignore candidates
who only want to work part-time. We have
to explain to them that if they exclude everyone
who does not want to work a five-day week, they
might miss out on the right person.’
DEMANDS
Candidates often need to be educated about employer
expectations as well, she says. ‘Some people find
it easier to do what they are told,’ she smiles. ‘Some
youngsters think they can start off working parttime
or making demands. But if they really want the
job, we have to point out to them that they need to
invest time in it and win their employer’s trust. Only
then they can take advantage of the flexibility.’
Cvs can need work too and internationals looking
to work for a Dutch employer need to be aware
they should not oversell themselves, she says. ‘If
your cv is only full of things you are great at, it
won’t go down well,’ she says. ‘The Dutch don’t
like bragging. But at the same time, don’t downplay
your achievements either.’
Nor should you attempt to cover up gaps in your
cv by stretching the length of time you worked
in a particular job to hide the three-month South
American trip. ‘We do background screenings and
we’ll catch you out,’ she says. ‘Having a gap is fine.
Just state what you did. There are so many reasons
to have a gap in your cv and if you try and hide it,
we’ll notice.’
At the same time, Voogt is a strong believer that
work should also be fun. ‘If you don’t make a commercial
role fun, nine out of 10 times you will get
a “no”,’ she says. ‘We build in incentives and com-
on the phone jumps up and bangs the large gong
in the centre of the room. Everyone applauds. ‘A
SMART
The Dutch have a reputation for taking a casual
approach to dressing for the office, and even
shorts might make an appearance on hot days.
Not so at the PageGroup where there is even a
shoeshine machine in the upstairs corridor. Ties
are compulsory when visiting clients. ‘It’s a way
of educating candidates about the importance of
dressing well,’ she says. ‘And if you don’t have a
suit before the interview, you are probably the
wrong person for the job.’
Voogt herself works full-time and leaves the office
around 6pm. ‘I get home, feed the kids, get
them into bed and then finish off anything I was
working on,’ she says. ‘Leaving early is easy, but
you have to be prepared to open that laptop when
you get home.’
Her dedication to the job has raised eyebrows,
Voogt admits. ‘I’ve been asked why I work full-time
and what my husband thinks about it,’ she smiles.
‘There is a lot of social pressure. But I don’t care.
I can be a great mum without being home all the
time. And it is a good example to my daughters.’
ART
Culture club
You may not expect to come across an art installation or a string quartet
at your place of work, but exhibitions, lunchtime concerts and one-off
cultural events are a key component of the WTC’s services to tenants.
Art and culture is big business, so it is perhaps
appropriate that a business setting can double
up as a concert hall or a gallery. ‘Some people
like art and others like beer and we want to
offer something extra to everyone in the WTC,’
says WTC Amsterdam managing director
Christiaan Huijg. ‘We are giving people more
than an office.’
The WTC stages five exhibitions and 12 concerts
a year, which take place in the central hall. ‘Art
in the WTC is a connecting factor between
the outside world and the world of work and
helps make culture more accessible,’ says
Marjo van Kleeff of Art Angels, who organises
the exhibitions. ‘Research has shown that art
can have a positive impact on people and is
therefore important for the atmosphere and
the experience in a place of work.’
REACTIONS
In addition, she says, art stimulates the senses
and creativity, even if people are unaware of it.
‘Art is about the reactions to it, whether or not
the viewer likes the object. Beauty is in the eye
of the beholder after all,’ she says. ‘So art can
be used as a stimulus in a business situation,
as it can with children or the elderly.’
Christiaan Huijg admits that not everyone likes
all the art on show, but says the diverse reactions
are all part of the process. ‘What is positive is
that people talk about it,’ he points out.
Örzse Adam of Musix for You has been
organising the lunchtime concerts in the WTC
for eight years and agrees that listening to
music stimulates creativity. ‘If you are in an
office, you are busy with routine tasks and
you are mainly using the left-hand side of
the brain,’ she says. ‘Listening to music and
melodies activates the right part.’
Experiencing live music, she says, is different
to the automated sound of a CD. ‘You are
actually involved with live performers. The
concerts bring you into contact with genuine
human energy.’
Örzse, who organises a concert every
month, likes to mix the styles so that there
is something for everyone. ‘I try to reflect
the international approach of the WTC in the
programming,’ she says. ‘So one month you
might have a Latin flavour, the next jazz.
Sometimes people don’t have time to go to
a concert venue. Concert and art fan Yvonne
Jacobi, who has worked in the WTC for almost
30 years, says culture is part of our civilisation
and needs to be treasured. ‘If culture should
have a prominent place in our society as a
whole, then it certainly belongs in a business
environment like the WTC,’ she says. ‘The WTC
considers itself to be a prestigious working
environment and it should also be at the
forefront of the promotion of the arts.’
Concert fan Aalt Leusink of the Bank of Tokyo-
Mitsubishi UFJ (Holland) says he considers
the cultural offerings bring enrichment to the
world of business and never misses a concert
if he can help it.
VILLAGE
‘If you consider the WTC as a village, the central
hall is like the village square,’ he says. ‘It’s a
meeting place. People who live elsewhere in
Zuidas come to the concerts too. I’ve even
seen people dancing.’
In particular, he says, the concerts allow him
to discover new things without paying for
expensive concert tickets. ‘It is also very easy
to talk to the musicians afterwards, and that is
something else I value.’
BUSINESS CLUB
SUMMER
PARTY
Despite the recent rain, it was the sunniest day
of the week, so Fitch & Shui’s ‘celebrate summer’
party in September got off to the perfect start.
Fevertree manned a special gin and tonic bar,
the watermelon jello shots went down a treat,
the mood was mellow and DJ Atmospheric Deep
completed the summer soulful vibe.
BOAT
RACE
Dozens of WTC employees spent an
afternoon messing about on boats
at the Wijde Blik lake at the end of
September in a special event organised
by the WTC. The day culminated in a
closely fought race between the teams,
followed by drinks and a barbecue.
ZUIDAS NEWS
AMSTERDAM MARATHON
This year the Amsterdam marathon will cross Zuidas for the first time in its history. The start
and finish are both in the Olympic Stadium and the route includes the Beethovenstraat, along
the eastern flank of the WTC, and a loop around the Gustav Mahlerlaan. The event takes place
on Sunday, October 18. For more information: WWW.TCSAMSTERDAMMARATHON.NL
Food bank
benefits
The Green Business Club Zuidas is organising another
week of action in the run-up to World Poverty
Day on October 17 to benefit the food bank
in Amsterdam Zuid. Last year, WTC and Zuidas
companies donated 330 crates of durable foodstuffs
and the organisers hope to do even better
this year. The week will end with drinks and dancing
on the Gustav Mahlerplein on Friday, October
16 from 16.00 to 18.00. For more information:
FLYING BIKES
Two consortiums selected
for Zuidasdok tender
The transport ministry has selected two consortiums
to bring out detailed tenders for the Zuidasdok
development, which involves widening the
A10 ring road and boosting capacity at Station
Zuid. One is a combination of BAM, VolkerWessels
and TBI. The other is made up of Fluor, Heijmans
and Hochtief. Both combines are financially
solid with the right capacity and expertise and
will now compete for the design and construct
contract. Talks on the contours of the project
with the ministry, ProRail and Amsterdam council
began at the end of September.
Building has now begun on the new underground
bike park beneath the Gustav Mahlerplein
and you may have noticed the flying bike
mural hiding some of the work in progress. The
mural was commissioned by Hello Zuidas from
Bas Peeperkorn, who designs sets for the National
Opera. It actually hides a 24-metre bridge
carrying cables and equipment which was erected
five metres up in the air to reduce nuisance
to those on the ground. ‘We hope it will provide
an inspiration for other building projects,’ says
Hello Zuidas’ Olivier Otten.
