Swiss banks directive
to Indian depositors
Swiss and other European banks
have asked Indian customers to avail the
on-going one-time compliance window
granted by the tax department for disclosure
of foreign assets. The call has been
made in the wake of the final month’s
deadline to declare and pay tax on assets
abroad beginning on Tuesday.The Undisclosed
Foreign Income and Assets (Imposition
of New Tax) Act, 2015, or the
black money act, for the first time allows
levy of tax in India on assets kept abroad.
Russia’s Soyuz docks with ISS
A Russian spacecraft with three crew
members on board, docked successfully
on September 4 with the International
Space Station (ISS). The docking of the
Soyuz TMA-18M took place just over 50
hours after the spacecraft took off from
the Baikonur Cosmodrome operational
space launch facility in Kazakhstan,
using a Soyuz-FG rocket. The spacecraft’s
crew includes Russian cosmonauts
Sergey Volkov, the Kazakh Aidyn
Aimbetov and Danish astronaut Andreas
Mogensen.
Scientists map genes of
embryo development
An international team of scientists
has for the first time mapped all the
genes that are activated in the first few
days of a fertilised human egg. Led by
Sweden’s Karolinska Institute, the researchers
showed that the newly identified
genes can interact with the “junk
DNA” — essential to the start of development.
There are approximately
23,000 human genes in total. In the current
study, scientists found that only 32
of these genes are switched on two days
after fertilisation and by the day three,
there are 129 activated genes. Seven of
the genes found and characterised had
not been discovered previously.

Hockey Championships in London. England's
victory over Spain, coming after
the Netherlands' win in the first semifinal
meant two teams that have already
qualified for the Olympics were in contention
for the European Continental
title, thus freeing a quota place.The India
women team thus clinched its ticket to
Rio through their fifth place finish at the
Hockey World League Semifinal in
Antwerp.
BCCI chief Dalmiya dead

(BCCI) president Jagmohan Dalmiya,
75, who was admitted to B.M Birla Hospital
three days ago after complaining of
chest pain, died on September 20
evening, triggering shock and sorrow
among the fraternity who termed it a
great loss to the game. Credited with
turning the gentleman’s game into a
global sport of big money and a reach
well beyond its traditional bastions.
