Your Mickle’s Worth<br />

Welcome to Summer! Let the madness begin. We’ll have<br />

swim practice, baseball games, football workouts, basketball<br />

camps, football camps, maybe some baton twirling and before we<br />

know it, school will be back in session. Our summer is off to a<br />

rousing start. I guess I should have realized when your Monday<br />

begins with a bird pooping on you, that will set the tone for the<br />

remainder of the week. Mine wasn’t just a fly over that seemed<br />

accidental. Nope. I believe I was the target. I was sitting in line at<br />

a local fast food restaurant, waiting to pay and grab my 44 ounces<br />

of caffeine. All of a sudden the birds of prey must have spotted<br />

me in my car and decided it was time to attack. The window was<br />

down and all of a sudden I felt the “plop” on my leg. Yep. The little<br />

feathered fiend managed to drop it from the sky, through the open<br />

window and land it on my knee.<br />

Over the next few days, my lucky streak would continue. We<br />

took the car in for an oil change. They noticed unusual wear on one<br />

of the tires. Their examination of the problem led to an estimate<br />

totaling $3000 in repairs. Two days later, our SUV went to the<br />

shop for repairs due to a recent recall. Upon further investigation,<br />

they found MUCH more. The grand total was similar to our car!<br />

But wait.... THERE’S MORE! Matt had a baseball tournament<br />

in Wisconsin Dells. Since the dealerships told us that neither of<br />

the vehicles were safe to drive that far out of town, we decided<br />

to get a rental car. We loaded up and headed out for the Matt<br />

and Dad adventure. Karen stayed home with Kyle and Kate since<br />

they both had other responsibilities. Day one of the tournament<br />

was beautiful. The water park was fun. The boys were having a<br />

good time. Then, day two arrived. Matt and I headed to the car.<br />

Unlocked the trunk, put the baseball bag in, and got ready to take<br />

off. The car wouldn’t start. I checked to see what I did wrong. Did<br />

I leave the lights on? Nope. Maybe the dome lights? Nope. Matt<br />

gets a ride with other parents. I called the car rental company and<br />

waited for the nice man to come jump start the vehicle. One of<br />

the hotel staff members came out with a handheld battery charger<br />

and it could not bring the car back to life. Finally, 45 minutes<br />

later, the person dispatched by the rental car company showed<br />

up and within two minutes had super charged the battery and the<br />

car was running. Apparently, he had four cars of the same model<br />

experience problems in the past two weeks. I got to the game in<br />

the 2nd inning.<br />

The skies opened and the rain poured down. I had packed<br />

for hot sunny days and there was a strong chance of thunderstorms<br />

in the forecast so we really doubted we’d play at all on Sunday.<br />

What I did not plan for was a cool and extremely rainy day. I<br />

stood there soaking wet, without an umbrella. Several parents<br />

offered one. I declined. Finally, some of the grandparents on the<br />

team insisted I take an umbrella for the second game. I think I<br />

looked so scary, I was frightening the children. I felt like changing<br />

my name to Alexander. Except my terrible, horrible, no good,<br />

very bad day turned into a week! In the midst of the craziness.<br />

I heard some of the other parents yelling “ Let’s go Matt!!” I<br />

looked out on the pitcher’s mound to see our youngest son. He<br />

had somehow kept his composure while being late for the game,<br />

playing in the pouring rain and wondering if his Dad ever got the<br />

car started. Our youngest was throwing strikes. Suddenly nothing<br />

else mattered. Matt knew what his job was and he wasn’t going<br />

to let anything deter him from doing it. He taught me something.<br />

Life is going to throw curve balls. You can choose to swing at<br />

them or strike out. Suddenly, the rain didn’t matter, I didn’t care<br />

about the car(s) and jeans can be washed. I can sing in the rain<br />

rather than mope. I can still open the window of the car to enjoy a<br />

beautiful spring day regardless of the bird that might be hovering<br />

overhead and while car repairs aren’t fun, they just a speed bump<br />

in an otherwise incredible journey.<br />

Hope all you dads have a great Father’s Day. We have an<br />

important but very rewarding job!<br />

For our family, heading<br />

into summer means setting<br />

up times and dates with our<br />

wonderful sitter and signing<br />

our children up for camps and<br />

lessons.<br />

Swimming lessons<br />

are a top priority. I look at<br />

swimming as a life skill, not<br />

a hobby. I have always loved<br />

swimming and worked as a lifeguard for many years<br />

growing up.<br />

All three of our children love the water and<br />

have never had a fear of it … which is a little scary for<br />

this momma. Being a part of the media, I have read<br />

so many stories about children or adults drowning.<br />

The fear is real, according to the Centers For<br />

Disease Control and Prevention: “Every day, about<br />

ten people die from unintentional drowning. Of these,<br />

two are children aged 14 or younger. Drowning ranks<br />

fifth among the leading causes of unintentional injury<br />

death in the United States.”<br />

The right age to start swimming lessons<br />

really depends on the child, but the earlier the better.<br />

According to the CDC, children ages 1 to 4 have the<br />

highest drowning rates. Here are some more statistics<br />

from the CDC:<br />

• In 2009, among children 1 to 4 years old who died<br />

from an unintentional injury, more than 30% died<br />

from drowning.<br />

• Among children ages 1 to 4, most drownings occur<br />

in home swimming pools.<br />

• Drowning is responsible for more deaths among<br />

children ages 1-4 than any other cause except<br />

congenital anomalies (birth defects).<br />

• Among those ages 1-14, fatal drowning remains<br />

the second-leading cause of unintentional injuryrelated<br />

death behind motor vehicle crashes.<br />

Fortunately, there are many options for swim<br />

classes, from City Parks Departments and YMCAs<br />

to certified instructors who give lessons. Parent and<br />

baby classes are a fun way to expose infants and<br />

toddlers to water skills and safety.<br />

Actual swimming lessons usually begin<br />

around age 3, when little ones can listen to the<br />

instructor and follow instructions.<br />

This year, our youngest will get to start lessons.<br />

I feel fortunate to have found a great swimming teacher<br />

for our three little ones. She takes time to talk about<br />

water safety and teach our children the basic swim<br />

strokes. She also helps to build on their love of water<br />

and each year, they look forward to swimming lessons.<br />

Meanwhile, momma is happy that they are all<br />

learning water skills for life.<br />

The Value of Summer Reading<br />

Camping, swimming, vacationing, and relaxing. Isn’t<br />

that what summer is about? But where do we squeeze in time<br />

for reading? Every year there is talk about children losing<br />

ground over the summer vacation on what they accomplished<br />

during the school year. As families, we can bridge the gap and<br />

provide opportunities to assist our children’s reading needs.<br />

The easiest step is making the time to read. Set a<br />

regular routine of designated reading time. In my family, we<br />

choose a summer read aloud and take turns reading it when at<br />

parks, picnics, as we are grilling, etc. Our favorite time to read<br />

is bedtime. Any regular routine of reading time will remind<br />

your child that reading is important all year long, and it’s not<br />

just an assignment for school.<br />

The next step is to model reading for your children.<br />

Turn off the TVs, tablets, phones, computers, video games.<br />

Grab a book, newspaper, or magazine and read to yourself<br />

during a family reading time. Encourage your children to grab<br />

a stack of books or kids’ magazines, find a cozy place in the<br />

family room, and read silently, but together as a family.<br />

These types of family reading adjustments will<br />

demonstrate the importance of lifelong reading, which can<br />

have powerful impact as they move forward in school and into<br />

adulthood. You will see a positive family dynamic change that<br />

will warm your heart.<br />

It doesn’t stop there. It is easy to add more reading<br />

opportunities if you know where to find them. The first stop<br />

is your local public library. There is something magical about<br />

looking at shelves of new picture books and novels, listening<br />

to weekly story time, and participating in summer reading<br />

challenges at your own public library. The magic is not just for the<br />

children – the libraries provide reading opportunities for adults,<br />

too! Every Quad City public library offers multiple activities<br />

and events. Check out their websites and print out their event<br />

calendars.<br />

Here is a list of more creative ideas:<br />

<strong>Family</strong> Reading Challenge: <strong>Family</strong> votes on prizes<br />

and benchmarks and everyone participates. Post goals on the<br />

refrigerator.<br />

Read Across Your State/Country Challenge: Get out<br />

state/country maps, plot a course using various highways, and<br />

record minutes of reading for miles read. Race across the state/<br />

country individually or as a family.<br />

Reading Olympics: Choose a country to represent,<br />

make flags, and determine minutes/pages to win gold, silver,<br />

bronze for specific events. Plan opening and closing ceremonies.<br />

The reward is playing a fun, creative version of the real Olympic<br />

event.<br />

If time and resources are limited:<br />

Visit local bookstores and check out their event<br />

calendars for author visits. Stop by author readings and book<br />

signings. Children will be fascinated at meeting real authors and<br />

may be inspired to become one!<br />

Local community theaters may perform plays based on<br />

books. Read the books, then attend the plays. Doing this could<br />

spark a conversation about the differences between the two<br />

stories.<br />

Visit a local art museum, take a tour, and sit by a<br />

favorite painting to write a story inspired by the painting. Create<br />

family sharing time at home where members share their writings.<br />

The opportunities are endless. Any focus on reading will<br />

only contribute to your child’s reading success!<br />

Escape the Ordinary teen and adult reading contests soar<br />

into action from May 30 to July 18. And while Superman<br />

may have leapt tall buildings in a single bound, being a<br />

superhero reader is a whole lot easier. To participate, just<br />

register and pick up your first prize. Readers of all ages<br />

can track their reading on paper or online with the library’s<br />

Kids at the READ to Me picture-book level<br />

complete the program after reading just 15 books – and<br />

books at Toddler Tale storytimes count. Super Readers in<br />

Grades 3 and up complete the contest after reading just<br />

superhero with an interactive game on the library website.<br />

Through community involvement community priorities<br />

are established. The Scott County Kids Early Childhood<br />

board may contract with a community agency to provide a<br />

completely unique service or an already existing service may<br />

be modified or enhanced to meet a particular need. Often the<br />

limited funding Scott County Kids Early Childhood Iowa has<br />

is utilized to meet identified community need; other times,<br />

needs can be met through facilitating communication with the<br />

early childhood service providers. Our community is fortunate<br />

The Scott County Kids Early Childhood Board is<br />

comprised of community leaders in the areas of education,<br />

From the Early Childhood Iowa state board. The<br />

state departments supporting Early Childhood Iowa are; the<br />

How does Scott County Kids decide how to spend<br />

funding?<br />

Through evaluation of community forum information<br />

and community data assessments the Scott County Kids Early<br />

Childhood Board has established community priorities. These<br />

community priorities drive funding decisions. The priorities<br />

are as follows:<br />

1. Advance healthy physical and mental development for all<br />

children, with a priority to at-risk children.<br />

2. Increase access to affordable quality learning environments<br />

for all children.<br />

3. Increase awareness regarding the importance of the early<br />

years.<br />

4. Increase positive relationships between children and parents.<br />

5. Increase the number of center and home based providers<br />

meeting quality standards.<br />

Summer is a fun and relaxing time for many families<br />

and brings with it changes in routines and new adventures.<br />

For families of children with language impairment, it also<br />

means that there are three long months during which children<br />

don’t receive speech/language therapy. Fortunately, language<br />

is everywhere, so it’s easy to find ways to enhance a child’s<br />

language and let them practice talking and listening.<br />

Keep it quiet. Pick one or two times a day to focus on<br />

language and make the rest of the house quiet. Turn off TV<br />

and radio – background noise can make it especially difficult<br />

to process new words or complicated sentences.<br />

Engage in activities that you enjoy together and talk<br />

about them…. If you are out hiking, heading to the pool, or<br />

hanging out in the backyard, talk about what is around you.<br />

Describe what you see, touch, smell, taste, and hear. Try to<br />

make up a story about people or animals that you see. If you<br />

start the story, can your child finish it?<br />

What about rainy day activities? Pick an activity that<br />

requires following directions. Does your family like playing<br />

board games, cooking, or art projects? Take turns being the<br />

one to give and follow directions to make a craft project.<br />

Cooking can help children learn sequences (example: first put<br />

in the flour and eggs, then mix the batter).<br />

Pretend play, whether done indoors or outdoors,<br />

requires lots of planning and negotiation. If your child gets<br />

stuck, help them plan what a character would say (If the<br />

doctor says “Where does it hurt?”, what should the kid say<br />

back?) or provide them with the words they need to negotiate<br />

with friends (Tell Susie, “No, it’s my turn! Please wait until<br />

I’m done.”).<br />

Book reading (check out your library!) is a good way<br />

for children to hear high-quality language. Set aside 10 to 30<br />

minutes everyday to look at books and read together. Reading<br />

practice is important, but so is hearing a story, so make time<br />

for both. Children hear a wider variety of vocabulary words<br />

and sentence types when they have books read to them and<br />

that is a critical part of language growth.<br />

Talking about daily events is a good way to build<br />

storytelling skills. If something unusual happens describe<br />

the event for your child. Later in the day (e.g., when another<br />

adult comes home), encourage your child to recount what<br />

happened that day. A calendar with pictures or stickers of<br />

exciting activities can help children recall events further in<br />

the past.<br />

Past Tense Intervention Research Study<br />

Purpose<br />

To study how treatment materials affect how quickly children<br />

learn past tense using generally accepted treatment methods.<br />

Children receive up to 36 intervention visits free.<br />

Children receive up to $300 for participation.<br />

Caregivers may receive a summary of all testing for their child,<br />

whether or not their child qualiies to participate.<br />

Who Qualiies?<br />

4 – 9 year old English-speaking children who have trouble learning<br />

language and don’t have autism, hearing impairments, or mental<br />

retardation.<br />

Children who are not using past tense –ed verbs reliably.<br />

Caregiver Responsibilities<br />

Bring your child to a local site (school, daycare, community center) for<br />

up to 5 preliminary visits to evaluate your child’s communication skills.<br />

Allow your child to attend intervention sessions 2 – 3 times per week,<br />

for a total of 36 intervention sessions at an agreed upon location<br />

near you.<br />

Bring your child to the intervention site for testing sessions at the end<br />

of the study.<br />

You do not have to travel to the University of Iowa; we will travel to you.<br />

DIRECTIONS:<br />

1) Mix cake mix, 1/3 cup of oil, and eggs together.<br />

2) Slowly add the coconut flakes a little at a time<br />

continuing to mix the dough by hand.<br />

3) The dough will be thick and sticky, if it is too thick,<br />

you can add one more TBSP of oil or up to a half cup<br />

of applesauce..<br />

4) Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.<br />

5) Roll dough into small balls and drop onto<br />

parchment paper.<br />

6) Press the balls down firmly with your hand. If the<br />

dough balls are not pressed down, the cookie will<br />

not cook properly. They do not spread out evenly on<br />

their own.<br />

7) Bake at 350 degrees for 12 to 14 minutes or until<br />

cookies are a light golden color.<br />

8) Once the cookies have cooled for about 10 minutes,<br />

melt one of the German’s Sweet Chocolate bars<br />

by breaking it in half and microwaving it for 60<br />

seconds and then stirring it with a spoon to get it<br />

smooth.<br />

9) Dip the top portion of the cookie into the chocolate<br />

and place the cookie on wax paper to allow the<br />

chocolate to dry.<br />

10) One chocolate bar should cover about 12 small<br />

cookies. Adjust if you go with the bigger size<br />

cookie.<br />

11) Sprinkle coconut on the top before the chocolate<br />

hardens and if you’d like put one salted roasted<br />

almond in the middle of each cookie! Soooo good!<br />

12) If the chocolate is not getting hard you can place<br />

the cookies in the fridge, or even in the freezer for<br />

just a few minutes.<br />

FED UP: A Report on the Documentary<br />

This year I entered junior high – a great<br />

year with a lot of “firsts” for me. The first<br />

time I’ve had a locker with a combination.<br />

The first time I’ve taken the bus to school,<br />

and the first time I’ve taken health class. One<br />

of the things we’ve learned about is the food<br />

we eat: proteins, carbohydrates, dairy, fruits,<br />

and vegetables. It’s been fun to learn how<br />

each food group works in our bodies.<br />

My family and I were looking for something to watch<br />

on Netflix recently and we came across the documentary, Fed<br />

Up. It’s about the foods we eat and childhood obesity. With<br />

all my knowledge from health class, I was eager to watch it.<br />

Here are some compelling quotes from the movie:<br />

“This year for the first time in the history of the world,<br />

more people will die from the effects of obesity than from<br />

starvation.”<br />

“There are more and more fat-free, sugar-free and lowcalorie<br />

options now, but the children and adults in America<br />

are getting bigger and bigger each year. “<br />

According to this documentary, to say that exercise will<br />

solve the obesity problem is a myth. “To burn off a 20-ounce<br />

Coke, a child would to have to bike for at least one hour and<br />

15 minutes.” Most people are not going to do that each time<br />

they drink a sugary beverage.<br />

The film dismisses the idea that “A calorie is a calorie,”<br />

meaning that calories taken into your body versus calories<br />

going out via activity or exercise will determine your weight.<br />

“That is a myth,” an expert explains. “A calorie is not a<br />

calorie.” Here is one example why: “Let’s take almonds.<br />

If you consume 160 calories of almonds, because of the<br />

fiber in the almonds, the food is not going to get absorbed<br />

immediately. Your blood sugar will rise over time. Overall it<br />

is going to be a lot lower and for longer.”<br />

Soda is said to be a huge contributor to the obesity crisis<br />

in America – even diet sodas, which may send signals to the<br />

brain that make us crave<br />

sugar. The more diet soda,<br />

the more cravings. We may<br />

think we are outsmarting<br />

our bodies, but we are not.<br />

Many people believe<br />

they cannot eat healthy<br />

because it’s too expensive.<br />

Experts in the film strongly<br />

suggest the public has not<br />

been properly educated<br />

on all of the options. Junk<br />

food is eaten, craved, and<br />

repurchased quickly. Those<br />

cravings add up to big<br />

bucks spent on poor eating<br />

habits.<br />

The film revealed that<br />

type two diabetes, which used to be an adults-only disease, is<br />

now on the rise among adolescents. One doctor noted, “We<br />

know how to take care of older people with diabetes, but how<br />

do we take care of a 10-year-old for an additional 50, 60, or 70<br />

years with the same condition? We have no idea what this may<br />

mean long-term and it’s very scary.”<br />

In the 1980s, people were encouraged to eat less fat to<br />

lose weight. Food companies responded by re-engineering<br />

foods to have less fat. However, if you take out the fat, the<br />

food does not taste as good, so they add more sugar.<br />

An expert explained: “When you eat too much sugar, it<br />

overloads your liver. When your liver is pushed to the max,<br />

your pancreas is forced to create excess insulin. Insulin’s job<br />

is to turn sugar into fat. High levels of insulin also block your<br />

brain from receiving the signal that you’re full.” Overeating<br />

sugar, according to this film, is very toxic.<br />

“If you go to the grocery store, there are 600,000 items to<br />

choose from in America and 80% of them have added sugar.”<br />

Reading labels carefully is important. Foods you might never<br />

suspect to have sugar in them often do.<br />

This fact is scary: “Sugar is eight times more addictive<br />

than cocaine and we start giving it to our kids months after they<br />

enter the world. It is advertised with children’s favorite cartoon<br />

characters and brightly colored packaging.”<br />

The general theme of this documentary is that calorie<br />

counting and exercise will not solve the obesity problem. It is<br />

what we eat specifically, and how it is processed in our bodies,<br />

that will make the difference. I encourage everyone to watch<br />

this documentary.<br />

Summer can be a daunting time for parents. At my<br />

house, days spent trying to avoid the “summer slump” and<br />

refrains of “I’m bored” often used to result in a breakdown of<br />

good guidance and typical household rules and instead became,<br />

“You’ve been playing that video game for how long???”<br />

Maybe we should get out and try<br />

something new…<br />

For youth who attend our<br />

summer camp programs, new is<br />

the thing to do! Every week at<br />

the Putnam Museum from the<br />

first week of <strong>June</strong> until the last<br />

week of July, there’s an exciting,<br />

hands-on, fully engaging summer<br />

camp. From the indomitable<br />

Harry Potter camp (where we use<br />

static electricity to re-create our own “wingardium leviosa”) to<br />

Putnamology to No Boys Allowed – Science for Girls, there’s<br />

a theme that will get your kids talking, moving and thinking<br />

about much more than where you hid that game controller.<br />

One of our most popular camps is a day-long program<br />

we offer in partnership with Iowa State University and the<br />

Quad City Engineering and Science Council called Engineering<br />

Kids Day Camp. Now in its seventh year, this camp has grown<br />

more than 500% since we first debuted it back in 2009. This<br />

Summer is officially here! With that comes potlucks, family reunions, vacations and the like.<br />

All of which require a yummy, homemade dish to share. These bars fill the air with the scent of<br />

delicious peaches. They are just sweet enough to be called dessert and I promise your hungry<br />

crowd will love them!<br />

Caramel Pecan Peach Crumble Bars<br />

3/4 c. brown sugar 1/2 c. unsalted butter, softened<br />

pinch of salt<br />

1 c. flour<br />

1 large egg white 2 T. flour<br />

1 T. brown sugar 1 t. cinnamon<br />

1/2 c. chopped pecans<br />

3-4 large peaches or 5-6 small peaches, pitted and thinly sliced<br />

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease an 8x8 baking pan and set aside.<br />

For the crust and topping combine 3/4 c. brown sugar, butter and pinch of<br />

salt until creamy. Add flour and mix until combined. Reserve 1 cup of this<br />

mixture. Press the remaining into the bottom of the pan. Bake until lightly<br />

browned around 13-15 minutes. Allow crust to cool.<br />

For the filling combine 2 T. flour, 1 T. brown sugar and<br />

cinnamon. Add peaches and toss to coat. Pour slices over the cooled crust, layer on<br />

pecans and crumble the reserved topping over the peaches. Put egg white into a dish<br />

and stir with a fork until frothy. Brush egg white over the crumbed topping. Bake until<br />

lightly browned, around 45 minutes. Cool completely and refrigerate to chill. Keep<br />

chilled until ready to serve.<br />

For NFL followers, Hawkeye fans, and<br />

Bettendorf natives, Pat Angerer is a household<br />

name. Just two years ago, you may have seen his<br />

name and number 51 flash across your TV screen in<br />

the Colts’ classic white and blue. After announcing<br />

his retirement from the NFL last October, Angerer<br />

returned home to Bettendorf.<br />

Pat Angerer grew up a native of Bettendorf.<br />

His talent and hard work were quickly recognized on<br />

the Bulldog football field, and he was asked to play<br />

for the University of Iowa Hawkeyes. After leading<br />

the Hawkeyes in tackles in his junior and senior<br />

years, he was picked up by the Indianapolis Colts in<br />

the second round of the NFL draft (Hawk Central).<br />

Angerer’s time in the NFL was short-lived.<br />

While he started in most of the games his first year,<br />

NBC Sports reports that various foot and knee<br />

injuries limited his playing time the next three. After<br />

only four years, Angerer decided to step down.<br />

While the NFL may have lost a top-tier athlete,<br />

the Quad Cities’ sports programs and this area’s<br />

budding athletes can expect to gain an unexpected<br />

boost in quality training.<br />

Through a mutual friend, Angerer was<br />

introduced to Matt Rokes, a physical therapist<br />

specializing in sports medicine. Rokes works with<br />

strength and conditioning as the Coordinator of<br />

Power Sports Performance with Genesis Health<br />

System. His clients have ranged from middle-school<br />

students to Olympic competitors, and he currently<br />

works closely with Augustana College athletics.<br />

Together, these two local powerhouses are<br />

teaming up to bring high-caliber training to young<br />

local athletes, from middle school through high<br />

school.<br />

Rokes and Angerer share a common belief:<br />

training should be measured in quality, not quantity.<br />

“A lot of times, young athletes don’t know what<br />

they’re doing incorrectly,” said Rokes. This can lead<br />

to poor practice habits.<br />

Angerer elaborated on what their summer<br />

program will offer, saying, “There will be a lot of<br />

functional movement, a lot of doing things right. The<br />

‘prehabilitation’ part, to me, is the most important<br />

part of strength and conditioning.”<br />

The two also spoke about young athletes<br />

specializing in sports. According to Rokes, studies<br />

find that a deeper commitment to one sport sets up<br />

athletes for more injuries. “Just saying I’m going<br />

to be in one sport doesn’t necessary help you and<br />

doesn’t make you a better athlete,” he said.<br />

Angerer compared what many parents and<br />

athletes see in youth sports to school. “If you’re good<br />

at math, you don’t take math classes for the rest of<br />

your life,” he said. “You want them to be the most<br />

well-rounded they can be, so why don’t we do that<br />

for sports?”<br />

Rokes is excited about their future at Genesis.<br />

“With Genesis and the sports clinic, we’re always<br />

looking for that next opportunity,” he said. Rokes<br />

anticipates further connectivity with athletes.<br />

The powerful pair is starting the summer with<br />

high expectations to help young Quad City athletes<br />

achieve their goals and succeed in sports.<br />

All athletes will be put through a Functional Movement Screen (FMS) to<br />

assess mobility and possible injury risks. Athletes will be given an individual<br />

sport specific plan to improve strength, mobility, speed, and agility.<br />

strength training technique, and neuromuscular development.<br />

A Life-Lesson Learned in the Rainforest<br />

Walking in the rainforest and<br />

into the living I-Spy book, I had<br />

no idea what to expect.<br />

We met a man named<br />

Pancho who lived there and has<br />

dedicated his life to preserving<br />

the rainforest, one art project<br />

at a time. Everything from the<br />

house he lives in within a tree,<br />

to the cement hut designed to<br />

look like a tree for his bathing,<br />

to the retaining walls made out<br />

of tires, Pancho made everything<br />

around him from raw materials<br />

and garbage. If I were to ask you<br />

to think of something made out<br />

of recycled materials or garbage, you may think of a chintzy art<br />

project made with little to no thought. However, Pancho made you<br />

think in a whole new light.<br />

He invited us to take a look into his home where we saw his<br />

collections of things he reused for different purposes: jars of beads,<br />

seashells, intricate bug carcasses, seeds, ancient ceramic artifacts<br />

he found on his property, and various other things that most<br />

people would classify as “junk”. From all of the odds and ends of his<br />

collections, he made beautiful musical instruments and brought a<br />

new outlook on life.<br />

Pancho explained to us his philosophy of life<br />

and how the world was created for all for us, but over the<br />

centuries, human beings tainted the earth slowly. As he talked,<br />

he walked us through his Eden he built from all the seeds he had<br />

collected over the years. The way he spoke about his plants and his<br />

garden was like a proud parent would speak about their children.<br />

Some of the plants he introduced to us we had never heard of<br />

before, because of how rare they are. Pancho also explained how<br />

his goal was to keep cultivating them to bring<br />

their numbers up in the world.<br />

When someone uses the phrase “Playing<br />

God” it usually has a bad connotation. But this<br />

was the only phrase that came to mind when I<br />

thought of Pancho, and only in the best context<br />

possible. His optimism and creativity for the<br />

ordinary was something to be smiled upon and<br />

made a great impact on everyone he spoke to.<br />

From the whole experience I took away a<br />

few things. First, be kind to all those around you,<br />

including the earth. Second, recycle as much as<br />

you can, and to the fullest extent that you can.<br />

And lastly, find something you are passionate<br />

about and try to build your life around it. If not<br />

that, then at least take some time every day to<br />

do what you love.<br />

On my many visits to schools or<br />

camps around the Quad Cities, I will<br />

get a question that may be obvious to<br />

the average meteorologist, but not so<br />

to the average person. For example, a<br />

student asked me about the sun and what<br />

it was made of. Okay, no problem. She<br />

then followed that question with this:<br />

“Does the sun have an atmosphere with<br />

layers like our planet?” Great question!<br />

Actually, it does! In this case, it’s<br />

based on the amount of energy. Let’s<br />

breakdown why the sun is the most powerful energy source that we<br />

know today.<br />

process that lies at the heart of the hydrogen bomb. In this case,<br />

atomic fusion. Fusion is what powers the sun and the stars. What<br />

we see as light or what we feel as warmth is the result of a fusion<br />

reaction. This releases a tremendous amount of energy in the process.<br />

The sun is composed of 73 percent hydrogen, 25 percent helium<br />

and much smaller amounts of most other elements. The continuous<br />

fusion of hydrogen and helium going on in the center of the sun<br />

keeps it cooking at 27,000,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The surface of<br />

the sun, also known as the photosphere, is comparatively cool at<br />

10,000 degrees. The sun’s lower atmosphere, the chromosphere,<br />

But the temperature rises with altitude to the corona, the sun’s outer<br />

atmospheric layer, which has a temperature of around – get this – 1.8<br />

million degrees!<br />

The sun has been cooking away for about 4.5 billion years,<br />

and will likely cook for another 5 billion years before it exhausts all<br />

its fuel. Once that happens, the star will cool and expand into a red<br />

giant star. The outer surface will probably expand beyond the orbit<br />

of the Earth.<br />

I then threw a question at the student: “Do you know what<br />

the color of the sun really is if you take away our atmosphere?”<br />

Its actually white. The sun emits light evenly in the entire visible<br />

spectrum. In this case, red, blue, yellow and green. When you mix<br />

all those colors together, you come up with white. So, if we were up<br />

in space, we would see the sun as a white star.<br />

Jenna Crookshanks, a 22-year-old cafe manager, used<br />

to have problems with her weight and general health. Dieting<br />

didn’t seem to work for her. She would lose some weight, then<br />

gain it back before long. In time, she started having pains in her<br />

stomach after eating. “I used to wonder, why can’t I eat the same<br />

things that my skinny friends eat?” she said.<br />

To make matters worse, she stopped having monthly<br />

cycles. In February 2014, her doctor gave her a diagnosis of<br />

polycystic ovary syndrome, an endocrine<br />

system disorder common among women<br />

of reproductive age. She continued to<br />

experience weight, digestive, and hormonal<br />

issues – and her doctor didn’t have an<br />

answer for her.<br />

“I didn’t feel well and didn’t want to<br />

live that way,” Jenna said. So she searched<br />

for other options. A friend referred her<br />

to Lori Sullivan, R.N., a Natural Health<br />

Practitioner and Advanced Clinician<br />

Plus, her food selections needed to be<br />

reined in. “Lori didn’t put me on a diet,”<br />

Jenna said. “It was more of a lifestyle<br />

change, making one decision at a time, like<br />

Lori suggested lower carbs, healthy fats, and proteins.<br />

The first goal was for Jenna to reduce her carbs to under 300<br />

grams a day. Eventually her carbs were reduced to 70 grams of<br />

net carbs a day, figuring the total carbs minus the grams of fiber.<br />

Each week, they refined Jenna’s goals.<br />

“The program is at your own pace,” Jenna said. “There<br />

is also accountability. Lori suggests nutritional supplements,<br />

but you can’t pile supplements on fast food and expect optimal<br />

results.”<br />

Jenna’s relationship with food is now better than it has<br />

ever been. “I take time to put thought into what I eat,” she said.<br />

“In the time I’ve been working with Lori, I’ve lost 40 pounds.”<br />

Plus, Jenna’s monthly cycles are now coming monthly.<br />

It can be hard to keep one’s weight down when working<br />

in a food industry, but Jenna now does so. She integrates healthy<br />

choices into the cuisine served at her business, the Hummingbird<br />

Cafe, located within El Rio Spa and Wellness in LeClaire, Iowa.<br />

“I’m thankful for the guidance Lori Sullivan provides,” Jenna<br />

said. “It has made a real difference in my life.”<br />

The majority of people will<br />

experience back pain, especially in<br />

the low back, at some point in their<br />

lives. There are many simple ways<br />

to help alleviate the problem, and a<br />

number of them may help your overall<br />

health, too. You may experience some<br />

mild soreness in the muscles, but that<br />

should fade. If there is an increase<br />

in pain intensity or radiation of pain<br />

down the leg(s) is experienced, a health<br />

professional should be sought out.<br />

Some ways to help your fitness:<br />

• When starting out with a walking program, go in concentric<br />

circles around your neighborhood. Then if discomfort becomes<br />

too great, you’re not too far away from home. If you walk on<br />

a bike path, go for shorter distances out-and-back, and then<br />

out-and-back the other way, so as not to be too far from your<br />

starting point.<br />

• When having to stand for long periods without movement, if<br />

possible, place one foot up on short box. Alternate which foot<br />

is on the box.<br />

• When brushing your teeth, applying make-up, shaving, etc.,<br />

press a knee against the vanity to gain a little support and be<br />

aware of your slumped posture.<br />

• Put water in milk jugs, water bottles, etc., for use as dumbbells.<br />

The amount of water can vary to give different weights.<br />

• Exercise balls are inexpensive and can help develop and<br />

maintain core strength, which is crucial for low back stability.<br />

You can even watch TV or work on the computer when using<br />

them.<br />

Upper back pain may sometimes be caused by a<br />

forward head carriage, which, in turn causes tight pectoralis<br />

muscles. If your pecs are very tender to pressure and your head<br />

feels like it is positioned in front of your chest, doing pectoralis<br />

stretching can help. Many of us have a forward head-carriage/<br />

slouching when working on computers, driving, reading, etc.<br />

Watching your posture when doing these activities can help<br />

also (as I straighten up when typing this).<br />

Back braces can help support weak muscles when<br />

you’re active or performing tasks, but they shouldn’t be<br />

worn when sleeping or when you’re idle for long periods.<br />

The muscles can rely on the braces too much and become<br />

weakened.<br />

The following things help blood flow and can help<br />

chronically tight muscles:<br />

• Drinking plenty of water<br />

• Gentle stretching<br />

• Heat<br />

• Ice<br />

Moline Brothers and Musicians Cope<br />

with Casts, Concerts and Chaos.<br />

musicians is busy enough. But when<br />

two brothers are wearing casts at the<br />

same time (one for an injured wrist<br />

and the other, a broken arm) then<br />

you experience what Moline mother,<br />

Michele Sapp, calls “comedy and<br />

controlled chaos.”<br />

Conor Sapp, 16, is a junior at<br />

Moline High School who not only<br />

plays the bass for orchestra, but also<br />

enjoys new challenges. “I was really<br />

looking forward to my first national<br />

Boy Scout Jamboree,” he recalls.<br />

“They had all these cool events we<br />

could try, so I thought skateboarding<br />

would be fun! I fell about half way<br />

through my first run and injured my<br />

right wrist.” As he was among boy<br />

scouts, everyone was prepared: Conor<br />

received immediate first aid and a<br />

splint and went whitewater rafting the<br />

next day.<br />

However, when Conor returned<br />

home, ORA Orthopedics’ hand<br />

surgeon, Dr. Thomas VonGillern, said<br />

Conor had suffered torn ligaments<br />

that required surgery. “I performed<br />

a wrist arthroscopy to repair his torn<br />

ligaments in order to give him the best<br />

chance of playing the bass again.”<br />

Adds Conor, “I like the double bass.<br />

It makes a big sound, but it also takes<br />

really strong hands. The width of the<br />

strings is so much larger, so it takes a<br />

lot of force to play it well. I had a cast<br />

for about eight weeks and a splint for<br />

another month, but I can play it now<br />

without any pain or problems.”<br />

While Conor was recovering from<br />

his treatment at ORA Orthopedics, his<br />

mother Michele Sapp, was attending a<br />

football game when her younger son,<br />

Ian, broke his arm. “I had just been<br />

to ORA with Conor earlier the same<br />

day, and all I thought was ‘AGAIN?’”<br />

For her 14-year Moline middle school<br />

student and trumpet player, the injury<br />

sent him to the ER. “I had just started<br />

jazz band and broke my wrist on the<br />

same day,” Ian adds. “I went to make<br />

a tackle, when an offensive lineman<br />

came and stepped on my arm.”<br />

J.C. Clark, treated Ian and says his<br />

biggest concern about Ian’s wrist<br />

fracture was that it occurred through<br />

the growth plate of his right radius.<br />

“Fractures that affect the growth<br />

plate are tricky, because if the break<br />

doesn’t heal properly, the growth<br />

plates can prematurely close off and<br />

his arm could quit growing — the<br />

result can mean multiple surgeries to<br />

get his arm to lengthen properly. In<br />

Ian’s case, I was able to adequately<br />

realign the broken bones with careful<br />

reduction maneuvers and a splint.”<br />

Weekly follow-up X-rays showed<br />

that the splint was holding the bones<br />

in position, keeping the growth plate<br />

open.<br />

tell parents, that if there’s swelling,<br />

24-48 hours, get an X-ray and a professional exam.<br />

As a parent of three active boys who also experience<br />

their share of bumps and bruises, it can be difficult<br />

to know if an injury is serious. My rule of thumb:<br />

if they are still complaining of pain after a day or<br />

two, it’s better to see an orthopedic physician.” Dr.<br />

VonGillern agrees, adding that in cases like Conor’s<br />

wrist, one cannot always determine the extent of<br />

damage, and treatment can require specialized<br />

training to restore both movement and function.<br />

As for the Sapp brothers, life has settled<br />

back into a routine, now that their casts are off<br />

and they’ve resumed their favorite sports and<br />

musical activities. “There for a while, it was<br />

pretty chaotic coordinating showers, tying their<br />

shoes, and shuttling them to appointments!” says<br />

Michele Sapp. “But, they have been great sports<br />

about the craziness, and I was grateful for the<br />

care they received. ORA was very attentive and<br />

very efficient. The boys were comfortable and we<br />

weren’t worried.”<br />

Smoke-Free Multi-Unit Housing: Good for Health<br />

The ability to live in a smoke-free home is a choice<br />

everyone should have. Unfortunately, for those who live in<br />

multi-unit housing, such as apartments and condominiums,<br />

breathing secondhand smoke from neighboring units has<br />

become a real health problem. According to the Centers for<br />

Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), secondhand smoke<br />

affects about 44 million Americans who live in multi-unit<br />

housing each year.<br />

Across the United States, smoke-free housing has<br />

become the natural next step to improving health in cities<br />

and rural communities. Because people spend so much time<br />

in their homes, making multi-unit housing smoke-free plays<br />

an important role in reducing tenant’s exposure to dangerous<br />

substances. There are over 7,000 chemicals in tobacco<br />

smoke, including hundreds that are toxic and about 70 that<br />

can cause cancer.<br />

Secondhand smoke is the third leading cause of<br />

preventable death in the United States. It can cause severe<br />

harm to young children by triggering ear infections, frequent<br />

asthma attacks, respiratory symptoms, and a risk for sudden<br />

infant death syndrome, the leading cause of death in healthy<br />

infants.<br />

Secondhand smoke in multi-unit housing is never<br />

isolated: it can come in through cracks in walls and floors,<br />

and air ducts. It settles in paint, carpets, and on furnishings.<br />

Secondhand smoke can come from cigarettes, cigars, and<br />

pipes. At this time, the FDA does not recognize electronic<br />

cigarettes as being a safer substitute to traditional cigarettes.<br />

Smoke-free policies are a winning idea for multi-unit housing<br />

residents, owners, and property managers. While residents<br />

can prohibit smoking in their own units, adopting a smokefree<br />

policy for multi-unit housing or property will ensure that<br />

secondhand smoke does not threaten the lives and health of all<br />

residents. These policies also benefit property managers and<br />

owners by lowering the risk of fires, the associated insurance<br />

premiums, and by reducing the amount of maintenance<br />

required before a new tenant moves in. A smoke-free policy<br />

is even a selling feature since many people prefer smoke-free<br />

property options when searching for housing.<br />

Thankfully, many landlords and property management<br />

companies are becoming more responsive to the majority of<br />

their tenants who want to live in a home that is free from<br />

secondhand smoke exposure. Many types of rental housing are<br />

adopting smoke-free policies to not only protect the health of<br />

the tenants, but also to save money by reducing maintenance<br />

and turnover costs, as well as the risk of fire.<br />

Smoking is a powerful addiction and people who<br />

smoke need help to quit. They can get assistance by calling<br />

Laser Refractive Surgery:<br />

Eliminate or Reduce Your Need for Glasses and Contacts<br />

Laser refractive surgery is the<br />

term given to a number of procedures<br />

designed to change the focusing<br />

properties of the eye. The clear curved<br />

cornea is modified by the application of<br />

laser energy in such a way that images<br />

are more accurately focused on the<br />

retina, reducing or eliminating the need<br />

for glasses or contacts.<br />

Photo refractive keratectomy or PRK is a procedure<br />

first approved by the FDA in 1996 to correct nearsightedness<br />

and astigmatism. The excimer laser energy is placed directly<br />

on the surface of the cornea to reshape it in such a way that<br />

the images of distant objects are more accurately focused on<br />

the retina. It works well for people with thin corneas who have<br />

low to moderate amounts of myopia and astigmatism. Because<br />

PRK is performed on the corneal surface, there is typically<br />

more discomfort than with LASIK and may limit activities for<br />

a few days to a few weeks, but results are as good as LASIK.<br />

Advances in the microkeratome instrument in the<br />

late 1990s made the procedure known as LASIK (laserassisted<br />

intrastromal keratomileusis) commonplace. LASIK<br />

surgery employs the same excimer laser used in PRK, but the<br />

application to the cornea is below the surface. A thin corneal<br />

flap (much like a contact lens on a hinge) is first formed by a<br />

microkeratome, or more recently, another type of laser. The<br />

microkeratome was a mechanical device which used a blade<br />

to cut the flap, whereas the femtosecond laser (IntraLase or<br />

iLASIK) FDA approved in 2001, creates the flap by accurate<br />

application of energy within the cornea.<br />

With its excellent safety profile and visual outcomes,<br />

the IntraLase Laser Technology is the most advanced refractive<br />

surgical technique. It takes less than a half minute per eye to<br />

perform. This flap is retracted on the hinge prior to application<br />

of the laser energy on the cornea’s center. The flap is then laid<br />

back in place and adheres by natural means. Distance vision<br />

is usually good enough for people to return to work and drive<br />

without glasses within 24 hours. Eye drops are used for a few<br />

days after LASIK and for several weeks after PRK.<br />

Middle-aged people who require a bifocal<br />

segment in glasses to assist reading will still need reading<br />

glasses or may opt for something known as monovision.<br />

In this situation, one eye is corrected for distance while<br />

the other is made somewhat nearsighted for reading.<br />

People are able to see at distance with the fully corrected<br />

eye and at near with the other. Many people easily adapt<br />

to this condition which admittedly, sounds somewhat<br />

bizarre. If this option is elected and later the patient finds<br />

that they can’t adapt, it is possible to convert the near<br />

eye to a distance eye. Reading glasses can then be used.<br />

Today’s laser technology has provided millions<br />

of people worldwide with freedom from glasses and<br />

contact lenses. The risk of surgical complications<br />

exists with all operations, and imperfect vision may be<br />

the consequence of laser refractive surgery. National<br />

studies indicate that mild uncorrectable vision loss (two<br />

lines on the eye chart) occurs in 1 to 2% of patients<br />

following conventional laser application. Advances in<br />

the programming of laser application with information<br />

gathered from the unique imperfections of the eye by<br />

a device known as an aberrometer give a more precise<br />

and personalized “custom” treatment. These custom<br />

applications have improved visual outcomes and reduced<br />

the risk of vision loss. Not all lasers are approved for this<br />

type of treatment.<br />

The laser vision correction marketplace can<br />

be confusing for patients. There are differences in the<br />

capabilities of FDA-approved lasers, differences in<br />

surgeon experience, and differences in post-operative<br />

care. Sometimes people get caught up in the hype<br />

of advertising and forget this is surgery that demands<br />

pre- and post-operative attention to details by an easily<br />

accessed, experienced eye doctor.<br />

Rhubarb Custard Pie<br />

3 cups cut rhubarb 1-1/2 cups sugar<br />

2 eggs 2 Tbsp. flour<br />

1/4 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. vanilla<br />

1/4 tsp cinnamon 1/4 nutmeg<br />

3 oz. heavy cream 1 unbaked pie shell<br />

Mix all ingredients well and pour into a unbaked pie<br />

shell. Bake for 20 minutes at 425 degrees then reduce heat to<br />

375 degrees for an additional 60 minutes until done.<br />

Rhubarb Pudding Cake<br />

1 cake mix (strawberry, yellow, white or orange)<br />

2 cups of rhubarb chunks<br />

1/2 cup water<br />

1/2 cup sugar<br />

Boil rhubarb, water and sugar for 5 minutes. Make<br />

the cake mix according to the directions and pour into a<br />

greased 9x13 pan. Spoon rhubarb over the cake batter and<br />

bake for 30 to 35 minutes until the cake is springy to the<br />

touch. Serve with vanilla ice cream.<br />

World Famous Hein Manor Potato Chip Cookies<br />

1 cup shortening 1 tsp. baking soda<br />

1 cup brown sugar 1 tsp. vanilla<br />

1 cup white sugar 1-1/2 cups crushed potato chips<br />

2 eggs 3/4 cup chopped walnuts<br />

2 cups flour<br />

Mix together. Place teaspoonful on parchment paper<br />

for each cookie. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes.<br />

Helping the Elderly to Enjoy Life<br />

Recently, a woman called Good Samaritan Society Services@<br />

Home for assistance. Her grandfather, John, wanted to attend his<br />

granddaughter’s wedding in Clinton, Iowa, but needed someone to<br />

assist him when he arrived.<br />

The Good Samaritan Services@Home office promptly mailed<br />

the paperwork to the family so it could be completed beforehand.<br />

When John arrived, our Services@Home caregiver met him at the<br />

hotel, provided assistance to John for the wedding, and accompanied<br />

him to the ceremony and reception. When John was ready to return to<br />

the hotel, our caregiver provided the necessary assistance to him until<br />

his family could return. His family was able to continue their evening<br />

without worry, and John did not have to miss his granddaughter’s big<br />

Medical advances are<br />

helping people live longer than<br />

ever before – but with this good<br />

news comes a healthcare concern.<br />

People are living well into their<br />

eighties and beyond, but 80%<br />

of those over age 80 experience<br />

some form of memory impairment. As more seniors develop<br />

such problems, the need to care for these problems must also<br />

be addressed.<br />

Friendship Manor, a 5-Star Continuing Care<br />

Retirement Community (CCRC), has been working to create<br />

an optimal living environment for residents with memory<br />

impairment. After consulting leading experts in the field,<br />

we have developed and opened New Friendships Memory<br />

Care. These individualized apartment homes focus on the<br />

comfort, convenience, safety and security of your loved one.<br />

Located at 1209 21st Ave., Rock Island, IL,<br />

Friendship Manor is situated on fourteen acres and includes<br />

four interconnected apartment buildings, plus the nationally<br />

acclaimed Silver Cross Health and Rehabilitation Pavilion<br />

and our convenient, indoor “Main Street.” Assisted and<br />

Independent Living apartment homes may be leased for a<br />

monthly rental fee.<br />

New Friendships is managed by Latoya McMillin,<br />

LPN, Memory Care Manager and Certified Memory Care<br />

Specialist. Team members who have been instrumental in<br />

the development of New Friendships include Ted Pappas,<br />

Jr., Chief Executive Officer/President; Lori Steiner, Director<br />

of Nursing; and Jeff Condit, Director of Development/<br />

Strategic Planning. Every member of our staff is enthusiastic<br />

about our eighth service division and is deeply devoted to its<br />

success.<br />

Residents of New Friendships are individuals who<br />

are experiencing memory-related issues but are still quite<br />

ambulatory, although all will need help with different<br />

activities of daily living, such as eating, bathing, dressing,<br />

continence, grooming, and ambulation/transfers. Our goal is<br />

to help each resident enjoy their life longer while providing<br />

a stimulating environment to maintain their mental status as<br />

long as possible.<br />

“This project has been evolving since the new<br />

millennium,” said Ted, “when we first considered how to<br />

integrate memory care into our continuum. Four years ago,<br />

we engaged the services of behavioral architect Dr. Margaret<br />

Calkins. She helped us prioritize how to go forward with<br />

memory care. She spent time with key staff members and<br />

provided a number of recommendations.” Margaret, or<br />

Maggie as she is known to colleagues, is an architect and<br />

gerontologist with a background in psychology.<br />

Pappas noted that Lori Steiner suggested looking<br />

at providing memory care in one of our current assisted<br />

living buildings. Thanks to that recommendation, the first<br />

floor of Building B is now New Friendships Memory Care.<br />

Friendship Manor’s extensive continuum of care makes us<br />

a Continuing Care Retirement Community,<br />

capable of serving residents with a wide range<br />

of needs. “We’re the only CCRC in Illinois Quad-<br />

Cities,” Ted said. “New Friendships is our eighth service<br />

division.”<br />

The Daily Routine in New Friendships<br />

New Friendships features 15 apartment homes and<br />

outside of each resident’s quarters, by the door, is a locking<br />

memory box, in which special mementos and pictures of the<br />

resident can be kept. Residents enjoy a big-screen TV, an<br />

aquarium, a fireplace, a multi-stimulation craft room, and a<br />

beauty salon/barber shop. Comfort and safety are built into<br />

the unit: even the flooring, which looks like regular wood,<br />

is actually made from a softer, cushioned material with a<br />

gentle ‘give’ to it.<br />

New Friendships staff are specifically trained to<br />

provide dementia care. This specialized training utilizes<br />

the practices that promote the principles of person-centered<br />

care. “We provide a trained director manager and trained<br />

staff,” Ted said. “We are proud to say that all our residents<br />

will have a place here, should they need memory care. If<br />

their life takes that path, we will be ready for them and they<br />

will not have to go elsewhere.”<br />

Therapy for the residents of New Friendships is<br />

designed to help slow down memory loss. “We use art,<br />

music, and even aroma to stimulate their mental processes,”<br />

Latoya said. Residents interact with a recreation therapist<br />

and engage in a wide variety of activities, from cooking to<br />

getting the mail to using electronic tablets.<br />

Residents in New Friendships are encouraged to<br />

make decisions and engage in activities. At meal-time, the<br />

residents dine family-style in Café MJ’s. Servers present<br />

them with selections and residents choose what they want.<br />

Residents also enjoy a variety of outdoor activities<br />

in Friendship Courtyard, which features several fountains<br />

and a garden of forget-me-nots. “We are grateful to more<br />

than two-hundred donors who helped to make New<br />

Friendships a reality,” said Jeff. “The donations for the<br />

courtyard totaled $100,000. Plus, an additional halfmillion<br />

dollars of donated equity was provided for New<br />

Friendships, enabling the $2.5 million project to become a<br />

reality.”<br />

What Should I Look For In A Hearing Aid?<br />

Have you ever picked up a brochure on<br />

hearing aids? Have you seen ads for them on TV<br />

or in magazines? There are many shapes and sizes<br />

of hearing aids out there – so what are the differences<br />

between all those styles and how do you know which one<br />

might work best for you? While there are always exceptions,<br />

there are three main types of hearing aids: custom, behind-theear,<br />

and receiver-in-canal.<br />

The first style is a custom hearing aid. This style is<br />

a single piece, formed from an impression of the ear. Custom<br />

hearing aids come in four main sizes. Invisible-in-canal, or IIC,<br />

is the smallest. It is worn deep in the ear canal and is not visible<br />

when viewing the ear. Only a small percentage of people qualify<br />

for this hearing aid because the ear canal is often too small.<br />

Slightly larger is the completely-in-canal (CIC) hearing aid.<br />

Typically this style is hard to spot but in some cases, a portion<br />

of the hearing aid can be seen. The next size up is the in-thecanal<br />

(ITC), or Half-Shell, hearing aid. Most of the hearing aid<br />

fills up the ear canal, as well as the bottom portion of the bowl<br />

of the ear, so it is more easily seen. The largest custom mold<br />

is the in-the-ear (ITE) hearing aid, or Full Shell. It is easily<br />

seen and fills up the whole bowl of the ear. Smaller hearing<br />

aids are more cosmetically appealing but can lack in comfort<br />

and features. Larger hearing aids tend to have more power,<br />

technology features and controls, as well as more battery life<br />

due to the ability to house a larger battery.<br />

Behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids have two parts<br />

that attach together to make up the hearing aid. The hearing aid<br />

itself sits on top of the ear and is connected with a thin tube to<br />

an earmold or preformed tip. BTEs come in a variety of sizes.<br />

Larger hearing aids are usually more powerful and easier to<br />

handle. They have larger batteries and more optional controls<br />

than smaller BTE styles.<br />

Receiver-in-canal (RIC) hearing aids are part<br />

behind the ear and part in the ear. The receiver or speaker is<br />

housed deep in the ear canal, while the main electronics and<br />

microphone are behind the ear. RIC hearing aids fit a large<br />

range of hearing losses but are best suited for people with highfrequency<br />

hearing loss. The housing behind the ear can be very<br />

tiny and difficult to see and a thin, nearly transparent wire runs<br />

down into the ear canal and attaches to the speaker. They have<br />

grown popular due to their discreetness and versatility.<br />

Which one is best for you? This is where an audiologist<br />

can help. Based on a variety of factors, the audiologist can<br />

help direct you towards the best fit. No one hearing aid is<br />

right for everybody and selecting the right one from the start<br />

will prevent a lot of hassle in the future. Before you can talk<br />

hearing aids though, you need to start with a good diagnostic<br />

Scott County Kids Early Childhood Iowa strives to ensure that “Every child beginning at birth will be<br />

healthy and successful.”<br />

How does Scott County Kids Early Childhood Iowa ensure that “Every child beginning at birth<br />

will be healthy and successful” in Scott County?<br />

Through community involvement community priorities are established. The Scott County Kids Early<br />

Childhood board may contract with a community agency to provide a completely unique service or an<br />

already existing service may be modified or enhanced to meet a particular need. Often the limited<br />

funding Scott County Kids Early Childhood Iowa has is utilized to meet identified community need; other<br />

times, needs can be met through facilitating communication with the early childhood service providers.<br />

Our community is fortunate to have a vast array of caring early childhood professionals.<br />

What is the Scott County Kids Early Childhood Iowa Board?<br />

The Scott County Kids Early Childhood Board is comprised of community leaders in the areas of education,<br />

health, human services, faith, business and of course parents.<br />

How does Scott County Kids Early Childhood Iowa get the funding they disperse?<br />

From the Early Childhood Iowa state board. The state departments supporting Early Childhood Iowa are;<br />

the Department of Education, Department of Human Services and Department of Health. Funding must<br />

be for services for children prenatal through age 5.<br />

How does Scott County Kids decide how to spend funding?<br />

Through evaluation of community forum information and community data assessments the Scott County<br />

Kids Early Childhood Board has established community priorities. These community priorities drive<br />

funding decisions. The priorities are as follows:<br />

1. Advance healthy physical and mental development for all children, with a<br />

priority to at-risk children.<br />

2. Increase access to affordable quality learning environments for all<br />

children.<br />

3. Increase awareness regarding the importance of the early years.<br />

4. Increase positive relationships between children and parents.<br />

5. Increase the number of center and home based providers meeting quality standards.<br />

Are the same services always funded?<br />

Not always. In addition to funding decisions meeting community priorities, funding decisions adjust to<br />

community resources as well. For instance if a funding source becomes available in our community to<br />

provide a service that Scott County Kids has traditionally funded, Scott County Kids would adjust or<br />

reduce funding accordingly. Any unobligated funding would then be contracted to another community<br />

priority.<br />

…and it’s not all about funding! We strive to enrich the early childhood system of Scott County.<br />

The system is made up of many private and public service providers – all working to better the<br />

lives of children.<br />
