November Thoughts
The leaves have fallen the gardens are at rest
Geese fly by on their long journey south
As the rabbits turn from brown to white
Preparing, waiting for the inevitable
The season of the witch has past by
Colors have turned from orange to grey
The silence settles in as Armistice Day approaches
A day of remembering a day of appreciation a day of
sorrow
Many came before us with messages of love
Many came before us with messages of peace
Many came before us with messages of hope
Now is the time to listen now is the time to act
Let not the messages be unheard
Let not the messages be forgotten
Carry them in your heart and carry them through life
Be the peacemaker be the difference maker honor the
dead.
On November 11, take the time to think about why we
gather. Take the time to honor the veterans and pray
that the world will turn away from war and start to honor
and value human life.
Community Happenings:
November seems to be that month that sneaks up on
us and forces us to take time to evaluate and plan for
the coming New Year. We had our AGM last month and
a civic election as well. I would like to welcome all our
new board members and wish them a successful year.
The leaving board members will be missed as they gave
their heart and soul to this community an d set the bar
high for the rest of us, filling their shoes will be difficult.
The board wishes them good luck in their future
endeavors and hopes that they will like to hear from us
occasionally when their needed expertise is required.
Corpus Christie Elementary
Engaging All Learners in Success
Corpus Christi Elementary is very excited to have a
wonderful start up to another amazing year engaging
our learners in success. Our school community works
together with the Parish of Corpus Christi, our School
Council and Calgary Catholic School district to provide
an environment that focuses on the whole learner.
This fall we have had Kelsey McEwan from CTV Morning
show join our Gr. 5 class to discuss Weather! Our
students brought in cans of soup and vegetables for
We Can We Care in support of the St. Vincent de Paul
Society.
Last year we were the very proud recipients of a beautiful
garden as we were the Arbor Day school for the year.
An exciting time with so many great guests including
Calgary’s very own Mayor Nenshi!
Parents please join us at our next mass at the church
News from Huntington Hills
School
Huntington Hills School is excited to offer the Big Brothers
Big Sisters Teen Mentoring program to students at
our school. A high school student from Diefenbaker
High School comes to mentor one of our students once
a week on Friday afternoons. The ‘littles’ at our school
are transformed by this connection to a caring teen and
look forward to their weekly visits.
On Thursday, September 26, 2013 all of our students,
staff, and some of our families participated in the national
school run for the Terry Fox Foundation to carry
on the journey to end cancer once and for all. We are
thrilled to announce we raised OVER $1200.00 this year.
A special thank you to Ms Renette Kurz, our physical
education teacher, for organizing this event.
We would like to thank all of our Huntington Hills families
and staff for joining us at the Chapters/Indigo open
house on September 26 to support our school library
resources. We raised over $800. A special guest, school
trustee Lynn Ferguson, also came to show her support.
It was a fantastic evening.
Our Remembrance Day Assembly will be held on Friday,
November 8, in the morning. If you would like to come
and join us, the public are welcome.
We also want to welcome all of our new families who are
sending their children our way this year. Please accept
an invitation to come out to one of our School Council
meetings on Thursday October 10, or Thursday November
7, at 6:30pm and learn how you can be part of the
incredible work being done to support students here
at Huntington Hills. Additional dates are noted on our
school webpage. Babysitting is provided and we look
forward to your help and support in the school.
If you are interested in purchasing a Student Union Ticket
Pack, please feel free to drop by the school. Cost is $20
and proceeds go to purchasing iPads for the classrooms.
CommuNITy RELATIoNS
REPoRT
By Mary LaCoste
I have not submitted an article for the last couple of Horizons
as I was dealing with family matters. I lost my oldest
brother to the big C and found myself late in submitting
two issues, for this I apologize. I hope all our little ghosts
and goblins were safe on Halloween and got lots of loot.
I do want to acknowledge our past Stampede event and
thank the Booster Club and my young volunteers for
once again a job well done. This year we had three new
bands and everyone enjoyed the music. In the hall we
had a band perform while everyone enjoyed their pancakes
and sausages. Outside in the Beer Gardens we had
two bands perform throughout the day. We have booked
them again for next year. Throughout the day, we took
up a collection for flood relief at the bar. Proceeds from
our 50/50 draws were also put into the flood relief fund.
We thank everyone you donated to the cause and are
happy to say we raised $1200.00 for Flood Relief. One of
the 50/50 draws was won by an evacuee from Bowness,
what a great feeling it was to see someone in need win.
We all remember the rain we had all summer and low and
behold we were hit in the late afternoon. However, with
a few helping hands we were able to move our function
minus the music to our Main hall and keep the party going.
Thank you to Genny, Jerry and John for their consideration
in accommodating this venture. It was a beautiful
day and very fulfilling for me to witness everyone
lending a hand and enjoying all the festivities of the day.
I also want to acknowledge Genny Kwiatkowski, who after
all the years she has spent in Thorncliffe, received a job promotion
which included a move to Sarnia, Ontario. I worked
with Genny for at least 25 years and will surely miss her. I
wish her and Jerry all the best and hope to see them back
here when they retire. A retirement/going away party was
held in the lounge in her honour and I would like to thank
Lorna, our new Lounge/Rec Centre/Banquet Manager, for a
job well done. I took it upon myself to honor Genny with a
special gift. As I mentioned to her when we would be decorating
or whatever she would be ready to shut it down and
I would always be pecking “lets do this” or “lets do that” and
so the decorating would continue. So, it seemed fitting for
me to honor her with a “pecking” rooster to remind her of
our times together. Our President, Leslie DeGagne, came
out one evening to the Community and took a picture of
the Centre and had it framed and presented it to Genny.
Jerry was awarded his lifetime membership for his volunteer
time. All and all Genny and Jerry felt our compassion
and love for them, they will be greatly missed.
There will be a Friday Dance held November 9, 2013, the
last one for the season, at 7:00pm. I would like to Thank Cecile
Dombeski and her committee for the work they do to
put on these dances. Dances will resume March 28, 2014.
Mark your calendars for the Children’s Christmas Party
which takes place Friday December 6, 2013 and will
surely have a special visitor. Keep an eye on the Bulletin
Boards throughout the Community or the Website for
more information on this event.
At the time of writing this article, we are busy planning
our New Year’s Eve Gala. We would like to see our Members
come out and enjoy themselves and help us ring in
the New Year. This year sees a New Band, Tequila Rain”,
performing for the evening as well as a buffet dinner
provided by Ollie’s Homestyle Cooking. Last year we
had a couple of groups of people for the New Year’s Party
that left early on account of the music. Therefore we
have decided to change things up and go with a new
band. There will be table reservations, so please book
early. I have been told by my husband that I never forget
anything, so I am looking forward to seeing all of
those that said they would attend the New Year’s Gala
this year. Let’s ring in the New Year as only we at Thorncliffe
can!
GRAND OPENING!
Be part of the conversation to help
shape the future of transportation
planning in Calgary
The City of Calgary’s Transportation Planning team
is conducting a review of the transportation corridor
study process and is hosting two workshops in November
to gather input from citizens.
A corridor study is a long-term transportation system
analysis which examines the current and future transportation
planning needs for a specific area of the city.
This review will help create a new City of Calgary policy
so The City can better plan and engage with citizens
about transportation corridors now and into the future.
Transportation Corridor Studies are important because
they will shape how people get to work, how they travel
through their neighbourhoods and how goods are
transported across the city for years to come.
The City of Calgary knows that your community has
participated in past transportation planning projects
and has the exact “know-how” to help The City make
informed decisions during the Transportation Corridor
Study Review Project.
North Gym Club
Grand Opening Sat. Dec 7, noon - 4 pm
The project team will be holding a northeast workshop
23, 2013. For information and details about how to take
Georges P. Vanier Students
Survey the Effect of Human
Activity on the Bow River.
The Grade eight and nine students at Georges P. Vanier
School recently went on their annual Riverwatch field trip.
Here is the account of one our students: “We were able to
raft down the Bow River until we arrived at the Bonnybrook
Sewage Treatment Plant. There we got a close (but stinky!)
look at the process that Calgary’s water goes through before
it is returned to the Bow River for human consumption
and usage further south. We then got back into our boats
and headed for the end point at Glenmore Trail.
The trip started with a raft ride down the Bow River to
enjoy the scenery and learn about the environment surrounding
us and the animals that live there. Along the
way we stopped and performed tests on the pH levels;
amount of dissolved oxygen; nitrate, phosphate, and
ammonia levels; velocity, turbidity and temperature; and
looked at the biological indicators that live in the river.
We started our tour of the Treatment Plant by taking a
short but somewhat smelly walk through the Headworks.
The next few machines that we looked at were used to
help remove bigger debris from the water. The last process
in the treatment of the water was the Ultra Violet
Disinfection tank which is used to make the bacteria stop
reproducing and make the water healthier for utilization.
Overall, the trip was educational, but very fun as well
and all of us had a very good time.
The author, Amy is a Grade 8 student at Georges P. Vanier School.
A Flurry of Books
We are a winter nation. Kids know instinctively that winter
can be a whole lot of fun. Calgary Reads suggests
that this winter you celebrate our signature season
along with your children. A warm way to start, while still
in the comfort of your cozy house, is to indulge in some
fun snow-themed books. Here are some suggestions for
winter reading that will help you and your young ones
get really excited about the snowy season.
Children’s Winter Reading List
For infant to kindergarten aged kids:
For the grade one and two crowd:
Winter Eyes: Poems and Paintings by Douglas Florian
Snow Music by Lynne Rae Perkins
Snowflake Bentley by Jacqueline Martin
The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg
Calgary Reads vision is a thriving community where all
children read with confidence and joy. Get involved as a
reading tutor, a booksale volunteer, on one of our committees,
Earlier this year, the timeline to present ImagineParks to Council
was this winter. A second draft was posted, with goals, strategy,
parks and open spaces is at www.calgary.ca/imagineparks.
Due to the June flood response and the municipal election,
some committee reports, including this one, were resched-
The Parks Department resumed work on the Biodiversity Action
Plan (BAP). Stakeholder input was compiled and an outline
will be circulated, for review. Each phase is expected to
take about 6 weeks.
• Education and awareness
• Incentives and legislation
Good Food Box Program
I would like to introduce the Thorncliffe Greenview
community to the Good Food Box Program. What
is the Good Food Box? It’s a monthly program
where community members can buy fresh fruit and
vegetables for a very low cost. Thorncliffe Greenview
Community Association now has a Good Food Box
Depot. You receive top quality produce at wholesale
prices. There are three sizes of boxes to choose from.
The large box ($30.00) contains 40 plus pounds of
produce. The medium box ($25.00) contains 30 plus
pounds of produce. The small box ($20.00) contains 20
plus pounds of produce. You only order the size you
want, when you want. How do you get a food box? Bring
your exact cash to the Horizon Room at Thorncliffe
Greenview Community Centre between 2:00 and 5:00
p.m. on the scheduled pick up day. This will secure your
order for the next month.
Rosemont School
October promises to be a busy and exciting month at
Rosemont School! Two classes will participate in Open
Minds/Campus Calgary experiences. Room 1 will spend
a week at the Glenbow Museum. This will be a great opportunity
for the students to study their local community
and expand their understanding of the larger community
of Calgary and southern Alberta. Room 4 will spend
a week at Ralph Klein Park as part of Eco-Action School.
Their week will be spent learning about parkland and
wetland ecosystems with a focus on conservation.
On October 7, we were happy to host Olympic athlete Georgia
Simmerling. Georgia spoke to our students about her
experience as an elite athlete and introduced the students
to the sports of Downhill Skiing and Ski Cross. Halloween
will be celebrated with our annual Halloween Carnival on
Tiny Tree-Dwellers:
The Northern
Saw-Whet
owl
Native to North America, the Northern Saw-Whet Owl
is one of the smallest owls found on the continent.
They range from 6.7 to 8.7 inches long and weigh
from 1.9 to 5.3 ounces. When in flight, however, they
appear much larger due to their wingspan of 17 to
22.2 inches. Like many owl species, the females are
slightly larger than the males. Northern Saw-Whet
Owls have round white faces with brown and cream
outlines, dark beaks, and large yellow eyes. Some of
these owls will migrate south for the winter, while
some may take up permanent residence. They are
named for the sound they make, which is said to
resemble the sound of sharpening on a saw on a
whetstone. You can hear their call more often in the
springtime when they are looking for a mate, but
they are vocal year-round.
These owls are completely nocturnal, and are therefore
rarely seen. During the day, they rest on low
branches, camouflaged by tree branches. When ap-
Report to Constituents
My recent appointment as Minister of State for Western
Economic Diversification (WD) has resulted in a very
busy summer. I am honored to join the cabinet table on
behalf of Alberta and western Canadians and to play a
key part in the shaping of our region’s economic future.
Through WD, our Government invests in western businesses
and industries and supports innovative entrepreneurs
in pursuing emerging markets. Western Canada is
well-positioned to capitalize on the many opportunities
available in the global market and I am strongly committed
to helping Western Canada remain a driving
force in the economy of our country, both today and for
the long-term.
I am confident that with this targeted approach, we will
continue to realize new economic opportunities while creating
jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
Since my appointment, our Government has delivered
funding for some key economic activities and projects
including:
• Canadian Forces personnel moving into civilian life will
now have access to the training needed to launch and
sustain successful businesses, with WD funding going
towards the Prince's Operation Entrepreneur (POE)
program.
• WD funding will support medical commercialization
efforts at the Li KaShing Applied Virology Institute at
the University of Alberta, allowing for the purchase of
specialized equipment that will be used to conduct
pre-commercialization activities for the development
and testing of new vaccines and therapies.
• Support for the 2013 Aerospace, Defense and Security
Expo, a series of workshops, presentations and networking
events, showcasing western Canadian companies
and helping them reach new markets.
• The Manitoba Pulse Growers Association, in partnership
with the Manitoba Corn Growers Association, will
receive support from our Government for the purchase
of specialized agricultural equipment to seed and harvest
soybean and corn research test fields to facilitate
agronomic research.
• WD funding to enable the Composites Innovation Centre
in Winnipeg to purchase composites equipment,
complete capital upgrades and hire specialized incremental
staff to support initiatives that will help expand
the western aerospace composites sector.
As always I appreciate your input and feedback on issues
that are important to you and your families. In my
new role, I remain committed to faithfully serving my
constituents while showing the world that the West
means business.
As your MP, I look forward to meeting and working with
you on the issues that are important to you in the coming
months.
The Northern
Saw-Whet owl cont’d
proached, their instincts are to remain still and
silent instead of flying away, which makes them
even more difficult to spot. Because of their excellent
camouflage, they are not as well-researched
as many other animal species in our area. Northern
Saw-Whet Owls wake around dusk, when they begin
to hunt. They wait patiently on branches until
they detect a small mammal like a mouse, chipmunk,
or vole, and then they swoop down on them.
These tiny owls have excellent hearing and lowlight
vision, which helps them to hunt in the night.
Northern Saw-Whet Owls mainly breed in evergreen
forests, taking residence in old woodpecker
nests or natural cavities of trees. The females lay an
average of 5 to 6 eggs per clutch, and then remain
with the eggs to incubate them while the male
hunts and provides protection.
If one of these little owls or another wild animal
needs help, please contact the Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation
Society at 403-239-2488 for further instruction.
Letter from our Ward 4 Alderman on the occasion of
Edgemont’s 35th Anniversary:
On behalf of the City of Calgary I would like to congratulate
the community of Edgemont on 35 years.
Edgemont has a history of celebrating its diversity
through various cultural events. It is a community that
continues to develop successful partnerships whether it
is with business or the local schools. Edgemont is also
very caring by making sure the most vulnerable of its
residents never go without whether it is through the
Christmas hamper program or neighbours looking out
for each other.
The residents of Edgemont can take great pride in
where they live and I am confident that this community
will continue to grow and remain one of the best places
to live in Calgary.
