(Adaptation)
(Mitigation)
Canadian forest service: A growing forest is a carbon sink; in other words,
it fixes more carbon through photosynthesis than the amount it releases
via respiration.
FAO: Forests influence climate change mainly by affecting the amount of
carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. When forests grow, carbon is removed
from the atmosphere and absorbed in wood, leaves and soil. Because
forests can absorb and store carbon over an extended period of time,
they are considered “carbon sinks”. This carbon remains stored in the
forest ecosystem, but can be released into the atmosphere when forests
are burned. Overall, the world’s forest ecosystems are estimated to store
more carbon than the entire atmosphere
The Forest Service estimates that the nation's 155 national forests offset
about 10 percent of carbon emissions in the United States. Forest Service
scientists believe that figure can be raised to as much as 25 percent by
doing such things as planting more trees in urban areas or reforesting old
