<strong>WWF</strong> is one of the world’s largest conservation organisation. <strong>WWF</strong> - <strong>Pakistan</strong> has been<br />

working in <strong>Pakistan</strong> for over 40 years to conserve nature and ecological processes by<br />

conserving world’s biological diversity; ensuring the use of renewable natural resources is<br />

sustainable; and promoting the reduction of pollution and wasteful consumption. Essentially, to<br />

build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature.<br />

<strong>Green</strong> <strong>School</strong> Certification Programme<br />

The <strong>Green</strong> <strong>School</strong> Programme plays an important role in ensuring the future sustainability of<br />

environmental resources of <strong>Pakistan</strong> by bringing a positive change in the attitude of <strong>Pakistan</strong>’s<br />

young people and will help to promote a more mature environmentally conscious generation.<br />

The Programme is planned for the whole year to give students regular insight into the eco<br />

dynamics and the overall environmental challenges faced at global and regional level, to<br />

broaden student’s scope as a responsible custodian of valuable natural resources and to<br />

consequently inculcate civic responsibility in them.<br />

World Water Day <strong>2011</strong><br />

<strong>Beaconhouse</strong> <strong>School</strong> System - Gulrez Campus celebrated the World Water Day on March<br />

22, <strong>2011</strong> with <strong>WWF</strong> - <strong>Pakistan</strong>. <strong>Green</strong> Students participated in ‘Poster Making’ and ‘Story<br />

Writing’ competition in which they highlighted the need for conservation of water<br />

resources. The main objective of the event was to raise awareness about the significance<br />

of water and its related biodiversity. All the students were given participation certificates.<br />

Top three winners were given special performance certificates.<br />

Organic Kitchen Gardening<br />

As part of the <strong>Green</strong> <strong>School</strong> Programme, <strong>Green</strong> Students of BSS - Senior Gulrez took the<br />

first step to develop a pesticide and fertilizer free organic kitchen garden. Students<br />

prepared the soil with organic manure in which seeds of various vegetables were sowed.<br />

Students are responsible for the plant’s maintenance.<br />

Segregated Bins Installation at <strong>Beaconhouse</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />

System – Senior Gulrez Branch<br />

Rawalpindi, December 19, <strong>2011</strong>: <strong>WWF</strong> - <strong>Pakistan</strong>’s <strong>Green</strong> <strong>School</strong> Programme<br />

inaugurated colour coded dustbins at their pioneer <strong>Green</strong> <strong>School</strong> - <strong>Beaconhouse</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />

System, Senior Gulrez Branch, Rawalpindi. Dr. Ejaz Ahmad, Deputy Director General,<br />

<strong>WWF</strong> - <strong>Pakistan</strong> was the Chief Guest at the event.<br />

Garbage segregation is the first step in recycling waste materials. Segregation at source is<br />

the easiest and most effective way of segregating unwanted material. After waste is<br />

segregated it can be sold to recyclers for further processing.<br />

This event serves as a platform for teachers, students and public as a whole to learn about<br />

the benefits of garbage segregation and an opportunity to integrate the segregation model<br />

into education institutes and more importantly into homes across <strong>Pakistan</strong>.<br />

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Ejaz Ahmad said that <strong>WWF</strong> - <strong>Pakistan</strong> aims to further<br />

enhance public awareness by engaging the youth in environmental education activities.<br />

The purpose of the programme was to engage school students and teachers in a<br />

structured awareness programme to foster a sense of individual responsibility and<br />

accountability in future generations towards nature conservation.<br />

<strong>Green</strong> Students along with Chief Guest, Principal and representatives from <strong>WWF</strong> -<br />

<strong>Pakistan</strong> and BSS participated in the segregation of garbage and other environment<br />

oriented activities. <strong>WWF</strong> - <strong>Pakistan</strong>’s <strong>Green</strong> <strong>School</strong> Programme provided three colour<br />

coded garbage bins to the school to reinforce and facilitate garbage segregation.<br />

Fun Gala at <strong>Beaconhouse</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />

System – Primary F-7/2<br />

The <strong>Beaconhouse</strong> <strong>School</strong> System on Friday, January 20,<br />

20<strong>12</strong> organised a Fun Gala with learning activities at its<br />

primary branch in F-7/2, Islamabad.<br />

The activities included ’Minute to Win it’ games, face<br />

painting, <strong>WWF</strong> – <strong>Pakistan</strong>’s <strong>Green</strong> <strong>School</strong> Programme<br />

stall, Environment Documentaries and other interactive<br />

games.<br />

Mrs. Saadia Shehzad - Principal of Primary Branch F-7/2<br />

stated: “We began the New Year with fun with learning<br />

activities. We have proudly registered our branch as a<br />

<strong>Green</strong> <strong>School</strong> with <strong>WWF</strong> - <strong>Pakistan</strong>. The year round<br />

programme includes many activities which will encourage children to think positively about<br />

conservation of wildlife and natural resources.”<br />

During the gala, the school presented displayed recycled waste materials where children<br />

made pencil holders, parakeets, flowers and borders under supervision of their art teacher.<br />

World Wetlands Day 20<strong>12</strong><br />

<strong>WWF</strong> - <strong>Pakistan</strong>’s <strong>Pakistan</strong> Wetlands Programme hosted<br />

World Wetlands Day 20<strong>12</strong>. An event was organised to<br />

commemorate World Wetlands Day, 20<strong>12</strong>to conclude the<br />

celebrations of two-week long activities at the Islamabad<br />

College for Girls F-6/2. The Federal Secretary of Capital<br />

Administration and Development Division Mr. Imtiaz Inayat<br />

Ellahi was the Chief Guest.<br />

World Wetlands Day is celebrated across the globe on<br />

February 2 each year to mark the date of adoption of the<br />

international Convention on Wetlands. This year, the World<br />

Wetlands Day celebrations were themed: ‘Wetland Tourism:<br />

A Great Experience’.<br />

The observance of this world environment day provides an<br />

opportunity for people to educate ourselves on the<br />

importance of wetland tourism in our environment and on society. Wetland tourism has<br />

benefits both locally and nationally for people and wildlife. Wetlands provide benefits such<br />

as stronger economies, sustainable livelihoods, healthy people and thriving ecosystems. It<br />

reminds us that it is an ideal time to start thinking about this precious source!<br />

<strong>Green</strong> Students of primary, and higher secondary levels from <strong>Beaconhouse</strong> Educational<br />

Complex and <strong>Beaconhouse</strong> <strong>School</strong> System – Primary F-7/2 competed in the Arts, Poetry,<br />

and Story writing competitions<br />

along with different schools,<br />

colleges and universities in<br />

Islamabad. The chief guest of the<br />

event was Ministry of Secretary<br />

Climate Change – M. Javed Malik.<br />

closing ceremony was attended by prominent organisations such as UNDP, Ministry of<br />

Climate Change, Global Environment Facility, the Embassy of Kingdom of Netherlands,<br />

Nature Carnival 20<strong>12</strong><br />

Islamabad, February 26, 20<strong>12</strong>: <strong>WWF</strong> - <strong>Pakistan</strong> in collaboration with Indus Motor<br />

Company hosted the <strong>12</strong> Annual Travelling Nature Carnival at Fatima Jinnah Park. The<br />

Nature Carnival is an event aimed at enhancing awareness about nature conservation<br />

among students and the general public through interactive 3-D models, games and<br />

competitions. <strong>WWF</strong> – <strong>Pakistan</strong> hosted array of activities including detailed 3-D Model<br />

making Competitions, Art Competitions, Quiz Competitions, Essay Competitions, Magic<br />

Shows, Environmental Puppet Shows, Lucky Draws, live music and an environmental<br />

theatre.<br />

Students of <strong>Beaconhouse</strong> Educational Complex and Senior Gulrez Branch also<br />

participated by constructing 3-D models and giving live presentations on Solid Waste<br />

Management, Energy Conservation and Tourism Vs. Eco-tourism. Special discounts were<br />

given to all the <strong>Green</strong> Students and Individual Members on Panda Products sold at the<br />

Model making using Recycle material<br />

<strong>Beaconhouse</strong> <strong>School</strong> System – Primary F-7/3 organised a model making competition<br />

amongst the <strong>Green</strong> Students of class four and five. Used bottles, boxes, recycled paper,<br />

and other used items were used for the model making. All the models were displayed on<br />

the Parent Teacher meeting on Friday, March 16 20<strong>12</strong>. Representatives of <strong>WWF</strong> -<br />

<strong>Pakistan</strong> were also present at the occasion.<br />

Say No to Plastic<br />

<strong>WWF</strong>- <strong>Pakistan</strong>’ <strong>Green</strong> <strong>School</strong> Programme encouraged BSS – Primary F-7/2, F-7/3,<br />

Senior Gulrez, Frontier Campus, Peshawar and Abbottabad Branches to initiate ‘Say NO<br />

to Plastic Bags’ campaign as plastic bags are a very serious and long lasting threat to the<br />

environment. Thematic banners were displayed on the campus at various spots that<br />

assured the ban and minimisation of plastic bags usage. Everyone in the <strong>Green</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />

including students, staff and management has banned use of plastic bags in their <strong>Green</strong><br />

<strong>School</strong>.<br />

Earth Hour 20<strong>12</strong><br />

<strong>WWF</strong> - <strong>Pakistan</strong> launched Earth Hour with the <strong>Green</strong> <strong>School</strong>s to celebrate a worldwide<br />

commitment to ongoing change for the betterment of the planet.<br />

On March 31, <strong>Green</strong> Students of <strong>Beaconhouse</strong> <strong>School</strong> System - Senior Gulrez Branch<br />

celebrated Earth Hour. An impressive ceremony was held to commemorate the event.<br />

Among the guests were the enthusiastic parents, Mr. Naveed: Sales Manager K & N and<br />

Ms. Afshan Sheraz: The News.<br />

All the participants were dressed in black, holding white candles. The lights turned off at<br />

8:30 pm, for 60 minutes. Everyone sang Michael Jackson’s ‘Heal the world.' One minute of<br />

silence was observed in the respect for our mother Earth. Mrs. Samira Agha –<br />

Headmistress spoke a few motivating words to encourage environment friendly behaviour<br />

throughout the year. The ceremony concluded with the National Anthem.<br />

<strong>Beaconhouse</strong> <strong>School</strong> System - Primary F-7/2 celebrated "Earth Hour on Saturday, March<br />

31, 20<strong>12</strong>. Celebration of this global event took place in the school premises from 8.00 pm<br />

to 9.00 pm. The <strong>Green</strong> representatives switched off lights and lit up torches and candles<br />

for an hour. The management and students also carried out a symbolic march and shared<br />

information and messages about Earth Hour. At the end all the students pledged to save<br />

energy and essentially mother Earth!<br />

Earth Day 20<strong>12</strong><br />

Islamabad, April 20 and 24: On Earth Day this year,<br />

<strong>WWF</strong> - <strong>Pakistan</strong>'s <strong>Green</strong> <strong>School</strong> Programme (GSP)<br />

organised a puppet show for the <strong>Green</strong> <strong>School</strong> students<br />

of grade 4 and 5 in <strong>Beaconhouse</strong> <strong>School</strong> System,<br />

Primary F-7/2 and Primary F-7/3, respectively. Nasir<br />

Iqbal, Puppeteer from <strong>Pakistan</strong> Wetlands Programme,<br />

enacted environmental concepts suited for young<br />

students.<br />

After the show a quiz about environment was conducted<br />

where winners were given colorful souvenirs.<br />

Motivational videos were played on various topics<br />

including pollution, environmental degradation, solid<br />

waste management and loss of biodiversity. The role of<br />

individuals, specifically students in becoming eco-friendly<br />

and encouraging them to act in environmentally<br />

responsible way was emphasised.<br />

<strong>Green</strong> <strong>School</strong> Programme also conducted a ‘Creative Article Writing’ competition titled ‘My<br />

<strong>Green</strong> Home’, ‘My <strong>Green</strong> Job’, ‘My <strong>Green</strong> Workplace’ and ‘My <strong>Green</strong> Country.’ Students of<br />

grade one to nine from <strong>Beaconhouse</strong> <strong>School</strong> System – Primary F-7/2, Primary F-7/3,<br />

Abbottabad, <strong>Beaconhouse</strong> Educational Complex, Sheikh Zayed International Academy,<br />

Froebel’s International <strong>School</strong> and Roots <strong>School</strong> System, participated in the competition.<br />

Students narrated their thoughts, discussed innovative and practical green ideas to save<br />

the planet in their articles.<br />

Earth Day, 20<strong>12</strong> incorporated a diverse set of interactive activities which raised<br />

environmental awareness among students.<br />

Islamabad, April 25 - May 4: <strong>WWF</strong> -<br />

<strong>Pakistan</strong>'s <strong>Green</strong> <strong>School</strong> Programme<br />

organised an in-school nature<br />

photography workshops for the<br />

students of <strong>Green</strong> <strong>School</strong> Students of<br />

the North region.<br />

Nature Photography Workshop<br />

The objective of the workshop was to<br />

discover and develop students' skill for<br />

nature photography and to raise<br />

awareness about the conservation of<br />

natural resources. It also aimed to<br />

educate <strong>Green</strong> Students about the<br />

importance of photography particularly nature and wildlife photography. The workshop was<br />

conducted by Ghulam Rasool, Official nature and wildlife photographer <strong>WWF</strong> - <strong>Pakistan</strong>.<br />

Ghulam Rasool explained the history and use of cameras, the importance and sensitivity<br />

of lenses, and the approach of light. The selection of right place, time and moment was<br />

emphasized. Photography concepts including point of view, human and subjects eye level,<br />

improvisation modes of photography and the importance of creativity in photography were<br />

discussed.<br />

More than 140 students of grade 8 onwards from <strong>Beaconhouse</strong> Educational Complex,<br />

BSS - Senior Gulrez, Abbottabad and Peshawar attended the workshops.<br />

Spellathon<br />

Spellathon is <strong>WWF</strong> - <strong>Pakistan</strong>’s nation-wide spelling competition directed at awarenessraising.<br />

Students of <strong>Beaconhouse</strong> <strong>Green</strong> <strong>School</strong> branches including: Educational<br />

Complex, Margalla Campus, Primary F-7/2, Primary F-7/3, Senior Gulrez Branch, Frontier<br />

Campus, Peshawar and Abbottabad are benefiting substantially in terms of enhancing<br />

their comprehension and vocabulary skills by participating in the Spellathon.<br />

Designed to take a student on a developmental voyage of scientific discovery the booklets<br />

ease a child into understanding various segments of the environment and make them<br />

realise their individual roles to mitigate impact on the earth. Most of the booklets focus aim<br />

to explain that environments are integrated, overlapping and co-dependent.<br />

The booklets were disseminated amongst the registered students of grade one to nine<br />

who then prepare for a spelling competition while at the same time learning about the<br />

environment. Non - <strong>Green</strong> students can enrol for the Spellathon while <strong>Green</strong> Students<br />

receive it free of cost.<br />

<strong>Green</strong> Corner<br />

BSS – Senior Gulrez, Primary F-7/2 and F-7/3 set up an interactive space on their<br />

respective branches. The <strong>Green</strong> Corner is an interactive free zone to express <strong>Green</strong><br />

Views. It consists of a plain soft board at a frequently visited spot in the <strong>Green</strong> <strong>School</strong>.<br />

Articles, news, pictures of the event and fun facts are displayed on the board. Activity<br />

sheets and information are also provided to the students at the corner.<br />

This innovative activity will add fun to the routine activities and will introduce sense of<br />

freedom of speech about green issues in the country.<br />

Waste Free Lunch<br />

<strong>Beaconhouse</strong> <strong>School</strong> System, Senior Gulrez Branch, Primary F-7/2 and Abbottabad<br />

Branch have been observing ‘Waste Free Lunch’ every Tuesday. The students bring their<br />

lunch in reusable boxes, items which they are required to take back home, wash and<br />

reuse. The idea is to discourage the use of the polythene and paper bags, reducing waste<br />

and using products with minimal packaging. This activity not only aimed at educating<br />

students, but is also very effective in sending a message to parents regarding using items<br />

with less packaging material.<br />

Eco-Internship Programme 20<strong>12</strong><br />

<strong>WWF</strong> - <strong>Pakistan</strong> organised Eco-Internship Programme for the green students of class<br />

eight and above. The programme is a five session workshop in which motivating,<br />

interactive and technical sessions give students the opportunity to be affiliated with a<br />

global organisation and create a genuine sense of civic responsibility.<br />

<strong>Beaconhouse</strong> Margalla Campus, <strong>Beaconhouse</strong> Educational Complex, Senior Gulrez<br />

Branch, Abbottabad and Peshawar participated in the programme.<br />

Around 200 <strong>Green</strong> Students participated in the programme, all of whom graduated and<br />

awarded certificates. Alternate Energy, Biodiversity, Hazards and Disasters, Water<br />

conservation, Environmental journalism, Nature Photography, Solid Waste Management<br />

were topics discussed. Nature Art, Paper making activity and Nature Graffiti were some of<br />

the hands-on activities along with discussions, group work and presentations on various<br />

issues were part of the programme. Activities were oriented towards skill development.<br />

The students were pro-active and innovative throughout the programme, putting forward<br />

their ideas, and questioning without hesitation. The workshop was organised for<br />

<strong>Beaconhouse</strong> students from June 11 - July 14, 20<strong>12</strong>.<br />

Welcome Pack<br />

<strong>WWF</strong> - <strong>Pakistan</strong> honored the registered BSS Branches with a <strong>Green</strong> <strong>School</strong> Shield, which<br />

is displayed at a central location of the school. The Principal of the <strong>Green</strong> <strong>School</strong> was<br />

presented a souvenir Markhor - National Animal of <strong>Pakistan</strong>.<br />

Once the school signs an agreement with <strong>WWF</strong> - <strong>Pakistan</strong>, students enroll to become<br />

<strong>Green</strong> Students, official Ambassadors of <strong>WWF</strong> - <strong>Pakistan</strong>. Registered <strong>Green</strong> Students are<br />

entitled to receive: a <strong>Green</strong> Student Badge, Pioneer <strong>Green</strong> Student Certificate and a<br />

Special Mention<br />

Mr. Danial Kasuri - Executive Director, <strong>Beaconhouse</strong> <strong>School</strong> System has been supportive<br />

toward the <strong>Green</strong> <strong>School</strong> Programme and other <strong>WWF</strong> - <strong>Pakistan</strong>’s awareness raising<br />

initiatives. Mr Kasuri initiated the signing of two major branches to the <strong>Green</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />

Programme including: Margalla Campus and Educational Complex.<br />

Ayesha Aziz, Group Head/Principal - BMI has been enthusiastic not only by taking charge<br />

of signing of two branches: Primary F-7/2 & F-7/3 but also by personally supervising the<br />

activities of the <strong>Green</strong> <strong>School</strong> as well as Eco-Internship in BMI. Due to her support and<br />

encouragement the number of <strong>Green</strong> Student registration and participation in activities has<br />

increased.<br />

BSS - Senior Gulrez Branch was the first branch of BSS to sign on <strong>Green</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />

Programme in the North region. Ms. Samira Agha: Headmistress has been the driving<br />

force of <strong>WWF</strong> - <strong>Pakistan</strong>’s initiatives including <strong>Green</strong> <strong>School</strong> Programme and ECO<br />

Internship. She has been exceptionally cooperative and supportive ever since the<br />

agreement has been signed. She takes special initiatives towards to initiative in-school<br />

activities under the <strong>Green</strong> <strong>School</strong> Programme umbrella and is pro-active towards nature<br />

conservation.<br />

Major Contribution<br />

<strong>Beaconhouse</strong> <strong>School</strong> System – Primary F-7/3 has the highest registration with 173 green<br />

students. It was not possible without the dedication and hard work of Mrs. Rukhsana<br />

Shehzad - Headmistress and Ms. Amina Saeed - Senior Mistress.<br />

<strong>Beaconhouse</strong> <strong>School</strong> System – Primary F-7/2 is very proactive not only in the <strong>Green</strong><br />

<strong>School</strong> Programme activities but other <strong>WWF</strong>-<strong>Pakistan</strong>’s initiatives as well. Under the<br />

leadership of Senior Mistress – Ms. Saadia Shehzad, the school management is open<br />

towards nature conservation initiatives.<br />

Ms. Farah Rizwan and Shela Khan of <strong>Beaconhouse</strong> Educational Complex have been very<br />

supportive and helpful throughout all <strong>Green</strong> <strong>School</strong> activities held at their campus. They go<br />

to the extra mile to ensure the smooth flow of activities and also initiate <strong>Green</strong> activities on<br />

campus.<br />

Ms. Lois Malik, Headmistress of <strong>Beaconhouse</strong> <strong>School</strong> System - Abbottabad has been very<br />

helpful. BSS Abbottabad has been participating in the Eco-Internship and proactively takes<br />

up new GSP initiatives.<br />

<strong>Beaconhouse</strong> <strong>School</strong> System – Frontier Campus, Peshawar has a very devoted team for<br />

the GSP initiatives. Especially the activity coordinator Ms. Nargis Iqbal who has always<br />

been responsive and supportive towards GSP proposed activities.<br />
