NEW HOSTS OF ERWINIA AMYLOVORA IN SERBIA

Erwinia amylovora was registred on two ornamental plants – Chaenomeles japonica
and Cotoneaster horizontalis for the first time in Serbia in 2000. Both species were grown
nearlby of the apple orchards in which fireblight severity was epiphytotic because of high
temperatures during flowering period of apple.

INTRODUCTION
For more than one decade bacterial Fire Blight (Erwinia amylovora) has
spreaded through out the territory of Serbia. This quarantine pathogen was initially
established on pear, quince and apple in 1990. Next year it was found on medlar
(Mespilus germanica) and hawthorn (Crategus sp.) (Panić and Arsenijević,
1996). Later on, Fire Blight occurred on ornamental plants: on fire thorn in 1997
(Pyracantha coccinea) (Gavrilovic and Arsenijevic, 1998), and on Chaenomeles
japonica and Cotoneaster horizontalis in 2000 (Balaž Jelica, 2000; Balaž Jelica
et al., 2004 ).
The most endangered species are quince and pear trees in Serbia. The apple
trees were highly infected only in some years, such was 2000 when appearence of
Fire Blight had been epyphytotic. The outbreak occurrence on apple blossoms was
favored by high temperatures during flowering period. Due to the high infectious
