If you want to be a spectator, plan to be in 

Powell River on July 2 when BC Bike Race 

returns for the third year. More than 500 cyclists 

from around the world will be riding 

through our network of trails. 

Should you fancy a mode of transportation 

by sea, you will no doubt make a stop at the 

Westview harbour that has all the amenities 

sailors and motorboat travellers require. 

Heading out and up the coast, the worldrenowned 

Desolation Sound awaits with its 

warm waters and sheltered bays. 

If Powell River is your final destination, 

there are many lakes that can be explored, 

by boat, kayak or canoe, including the largest, 

Powell Lake, which stretches up 50 kilometres 

like a freshwater fjord between the 

mountains. 

Cooling off is easy in those same lakes or at 

the many sandy beaches along the seaside from 

Saltery Bay to Lund as well as Texada and Savary 

islands. In addition to commercial accommodations, 

there are provincial and regional 

campsites where you can set up a tent. 

If you’re the type to search for your own 

dinner, you can fish, set traps for prawns or 

dig for clams. Rather have it done for you? 

Powell River has numerous restaurants ready 

to serve breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. 

Defined neighbourhoods throughout the 

region offer opportunities to stay and explore

POWELL RIVER 

INDEPENDENTLY OWNED AND OPERATED 

DRIVE: Powell River is about 145 kilometres north of 

Vancouver, BC, near the end—or start, depending on how 

you look at it—of Highway 101, which hugs the coast of 

North and South America all the way to Chile. It takes about 

five hours to get here from the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal 

in Vancouver. Drivers will enjoy two ferry rides among some 

of the most beautiful West Coast scenery. From Victoria, take

RIDERS SPEND DAYS ON END 

EXPLORING HUNDREDS OF 

KILOMETRES OF TRAILS AROUND 

POWELL RIVER AND NEVER COVER 

THE SAME GROUND. 

It has been said that Powell River has more trails than paved roads. Some 

are narrow, tight and twisty, barely wide enough for a person to ride through; 

others allow for a pair of riders to pass side by side. 

Providing a powerful visual, Powell River’s trail network has been compared 

to scenes from Lord of the Rings, the Oscar award-winning film trilogy based 

on books by JRR Tolkien. Beams of sunlight stream through canopies of giant 

trees, before falling on variegated green growth of a multitude of bushes and 

lush moss beneath. Riding down a trail in summer provides scenes that rival 

stained-glass windows in cathedrals. 

Trails have memorable names such as Suicide Creek, Spaghetti Bowl, 

Appleton Canyon, Sweetwater, Blackwater, Toad Hollow, Frog Alley, Happy 

Face, Deer Lake Loop, Wizard’s Way and Squirrel Crossing to name only a 

few. 

Around the turn of the 20th century, logging railroads were built to access 

trees. No trains or tracks exist today, however those old railway beds are still 

part of a vast trail system. 

Trails are used all year round with mountain bikers found on them even on 

Christmas or New Year’s Day. 

In the past 10 to 15 years, recreational groups have worked the trails, building 

bridges over streams, maintaining them after strong winds blow down 

trees making the trails impassable until work parties are able to get out and 

clear them again. 

Originally, the Bloody Old Men’s Brigade, also known as the BOMB squad, 

was responsible for building many trails and bridges. They have been joined 

by others, including those which form Powell River Outdoor Recreation Users 

Group, that use and maintain trails. More than 1,700 volunteer hours 

were logged in 2012 for trail maintenance. The trails and maintenance follow 

the guidelines of International Mountain Biking Association–Canada, which 

last year sent two representatives to conduct a sustainable trails workshop. 

Respect for the land and all users are prime objectives along with safety. 

Trails vary from flat areas within City of Powell River limits to step trails 

that lead to mountaintops. For beginners and youngsters, a great start is 

Willingdon Beach Trail through Millennium Park. Families frequently choose 

to spend an afternoon cycling around Inland Lake, which is also wheelchair 

accessible. Mountain bikers can head upland via various trails that intersect 

the main lakeside trail. 

BC Bike Race has chosen Powell River with its extensive trail system as a 

site for the annual seven-day event that attracts riders from around the world. 

Different communities have different trail personalities. This area has been 

described as more cross-country than downhill although there are a few of 

the latter. 

Maps and advice on local trails are available at Tourism Powell River on 

Joyce Avenue. Recently over 450 kilometres have been traversed and recorded 

using GPS (Global Positioning System) to create an updated map which is 

expected to be published sometime in 2013.

EASIER RIDES 

A 13-kilometre trail circles Inland Lake, 

a 20-minute drive from the Cranberry 

community in Powell River. Inland 

Lake is nestled in a valley and the trail 

takes riders through typical West Coast 

rainforest. The air is fresh, the water 

clear and the forest is quiet. Keep an eye 

out for chainsaw carvings and watch for 

birds and animals. 

The trail is wheelchair accessible. 

Inland Lake Provincial Park provides 

campsites and picnic areas. There is 

swimming access as well. This is a great 

place for the whole family to bring their 

bikes, picnic lunch and swimming apparel. 

WILLINGDON BEACH TRAIL: Ride 

through the forest just above the 

shoreline. The trail begins just north of 

Willingdon Beach. Originally a railroad 

that brought logs from Powell Lake, the 

trail is wide and flat. 

SAVARY ISLAND: Take bikes aboard the 

water taxi from Lund to Savary Island 

and enjoy touring this unique oasis. Pack 

a lunch and whatever is required for the 

day. 

TEXADA ISLAND: Ferry over from 

the Westview terminal and explore the 

largest of the Gulf Islands. Texada has 

much to offer, but has plenty of hills.

DESOLATION 

SOUND 

Powell River is known as the gateway to Desolation Sound that 

lies just 30 kilometres to its north. The sound’s stunning scenery, 

spectacular wildlife, protected water and an abundance of snug anchorages 

have attracted boating enthusiasts and eco-tourists from 

around the world. 

Desolation Sound was named by Captain George Vancouver, who 

sailed through the area in June and July 1792 while charting the 

coast and searching for the fabled Northwest Passage. During the 

time they spent in Desolation Sound, Captain Vancouver’s ships 

were accompanied by two Spanish vessels which were also charting 

the coast. Their captains, Dionisio Galiano and Antonio Valdés, became 

close friends with the British seamen and the two expeditions 

exchanged charts and generally assisted each other. In a sad postscript 

to the brief friendships between these first European visitors 

to Desolation Sound, both Galiano and Valdés subsequently fought 

against the British at the Battle of Trafalgar, where Galiano was killed 

and Valdés seriously wounded. 

The sound was protected as a provincial marine park in 1973, and 

it remains the largest one in BC. 

In addition to its protected waters and world-class scenery, with 

nearby mountains rising to over 7,000 feet, a big attraction of Desolation 

Sound is its unusually warm sea temperature. In July and August 

temperatures can reach up to 26 degrees in protected bays, and 

make an afternoon swim or snorkelling expedition hard to resist. 

Freshwater swimming is also possible in several gorgeous lakes that 

lie only a few minutes’ walk from some of the park’s most popular 

anchorages. 

Protection offered by the high surrounding mountains to the maze 

of islands and interconnected waterways makes the region ideal for 

exploring in a small boat. With over 6,300 acres of water and foreshore, 

many beautiful deserted bays are waiting to be discovered by 

kayak or canoe, and the beachcomber will soon find out why the 

oysters of the region are legendary. 

Visitors interested in seeing the marine park’s wildlife won’t be 

disappointed. In addition to the more common residents, such as 

seals, bald eagles, otters and herons, boaters will occasionally be 

treated to a visit by a pod of dolphins playing in bow waves and 

might occasionally glimpse a pod of killer whales in the distance.

POWELL LAKE 

Sheltered on either side by steep, forested mountains, Powell 

Lake is deep and inviting. Its best shore swimming can be found 

at Mowat Bay in Cranberry. There is a large sandy beach bordered 

by a grassy knoll, plenty of parking, picnic tables and change 

rooms. Haywire Bay is a regional park with space for camping and 

a protected swimming area. It’s close enough to town for a family 

day trip. Across Wildwood Bridge and past The Shinglemill Pub 

and Bistro is a dog-friendly beach frequented by residents and their 

canine family members. Late in the summer, plump blackberries 

hang from bushes offering a tasty treat before a cooling dip. 

WILLINGDON BEACH 

Located conveniently in the Westview neighbourhood, 

Willingdon Beach is close to everything. It’s a well-developed park 

with a children’s play area, playground equipment and a water 

park. The shore is sandy and sheltered by a breakwater. There is a 

fast food and ice cream stand, plenty of well-groomed lawn, trees 

for shade and restrooms. A full-service camping area is adjacent 

to the beach. Special swimming spots can be found all along the

breakwater formed by old World War II supply ships.

INLAND LAKE: About 20 minutes from town, Inland Lake is 

popular for swimming as well as picnicking, biking and hiking. It’s 

wheelchair accessible. 

PALM BEACH: A large grassy field is a popular picnic area for 

families who come here to frolic in the sea. Children love to float 

around on logs that wash up on the beach. When the tide it out, 

this is a perfect area for building sandcastles. 

SHELTER POINT PARK: A promontory provides great swimming 

on either side of the very popular regional park on Texada Island. 

Early morning splashes or late evening dips, while watching the 

most beautiful sunsets in the world, are favourites for swimmers of 

all ages. The swimming areas are surrounded by a fully-equipped 

campsite and RV park, including hot showers. 

GIBSON'S BEACH: Just north of the neighbourhood of Wildwood, 

Gibson's Beach is the choice of locals. It also features a boat ramp.

KAYAKING 

COPELAND ISLANDS 

Known locally as the Ragged Islands, the Copeland Islands 

are located north of Powell River between Lund and Desolation 

Sound. Home to an abundance of shellfish and therefore many 

well-fed seals, a paddle around the ragged shoreline reveals 

tranquil beauty. 

Leave from Lund and paddle north. Soon, you’ll come to a more 

sheltered paddling area with protected bays and inlets perfect 

for exploring. This is a great spot for swimming, snorkelling, 

scuba diving and fishing. 

SAVARY ISLAND 

As you head toward those glacial reefs and white sandy 

beaches, just a few kilometres’ paddle from Lund, keep your 

eyes open for sea lions, bald eagles and a variety of sea birds, 

all waiting for their breakfast to surface. Kayaking is especially 

good on the southwest side of Savary where it is too rocky for 

power boats. The water is shallow here and you will likely see 

many types of marine life. 

ON A LAKE 

Lake kayaking is a quieter activity than the ocean-travelling 

type with challenges of waves and tides. Powell River has 

plenty of opportunities for both with miles of shoreline and 

nearby islands as well as an abundance of lakes within an easy

POWELL FOREST CANOE ROUTE 

An 80-kilometre adventure winds through nine interconnected lakes, rivers and creeks, surrounded by mountains, forests and wooded 

lowlands. Portages are well-kept. Along the canoe route and the adjoining lakes there are 20 forest recreational sites for camping, each with 

toilets and picnic tables. Although the entire route will take five to seven days to complete, it is possible to drive to different route access

CAMPING 

SALTERY BAY 

Saltery Bay Provincial Park is perfect for 

camping amid tall, shady trees. The sites 

are roomy and clearly marked. There are 

picnic tables and outhouses. A wide, raked 

trail leads down to the beach where the sea 

and time have worn away the rocks. There 

are picnic tables at the beach and plenty of 

places to set up for a day of relaxation by 

the ocean. 

WILLINGDON BEACH 

Willingdon Beach is a city park right in 

the heart of Powell River. There’s a wide 

swath of sandy beach, lush expanses of 

grass, children’s playground and water 

park, and plenty of full-facility camping 

accommodations. Willingdon Beach Trail 

leads north from the edge of the beach. A 

takeout restaurant offers meals and snacks. 

INLAND LAKE 

At Inland Lake outdoor enthusiasts can 

swim, fish, canoe, cycle and hike to their 

heart’s content. This wonderful park is just 

12 kilometres from the centre of Powell 

River. There are trout in the lake, a small 

boat dock and outhouse facilities. Widedoor 

log camping cabins for wheelchair 

visitors only are available along the 

wheelchair-accessible trail. 

HAYWIRE BAY 

Haywire Bay is a favourite for visitors and 

local residents for great family camping. 

During the summer, the 30-plus sites can 

fill up quickly. There are sites bordering 

on Powell Lake and roomy, pleasant and 

private sites further back in the forest. 

There are several popular swimming spots, 

hot showers, firewood for sale and canoe 

rentals.

DINNER ROCK 

Dinner Rock Park has a fabulous West Coast setting on bluffs 

overlooking the ocean. With its dramatic rock formations, this 

isn’t the best campsite for small children. There is plenty 

of hiking, exploring and dazzling sunsets. Campers must 

bring their own drinking water and carry out their garbage. 

Vehicle access is a bit challenging and not recommended for 

low-riding vehicles.

OKEOVER ARM PROVINCIAL PARK 

Okeover Arm Provincial Park, north of Powell River, offers 

up to 17 well-groomed wilderness clearings spaced among 

tall trees. Each clearing features a picnic table and plenty of 

room to set up a tent or a recreational vehicle (RV). Campfires 

are allowed only on the beach. Visitors need to bring their 

own drinking water and take their garbage with them when 

they leave.

Hidden from view when travelling Highway 101 to Lund, 

Sunlund By-the-Sea is nestled among the trees in a little valley. 

A quaint footpath takes you right to Lund Harbour. Grassy

wastewater drain and 15/30 electrical outlet. Tents and trailers as 

well as motor homes up to 55 feet are welcome. Sunlund is a petfriendly

TEXADA ISLAND 

Texada Island offers great camping at Shelter Point. Clams and 

oysters on the beach can be harvested with a fishing licence. This 

area is also popular for kayaking. During the summer months 

there are hot showers available. There is also camping at Bob’s Lake

FISHING 

If you are planning a fishing trip or 

holiday to the Powell River area, you will 

not be disappointed. This area provides 

great salmon fishing, world-class trout 

fishing and the best prawns in the world. 

Here are some great tips to help you get the 

most out of Powell River. 

SALMON FISHING: Salmon are 

targeted all year round in Powell River but 

there are definite peak times. Let’s start with 

winter fishing. December to February is 

probably one of the most productive times 

to fish for winter chinook salmon. The fish 

range from eight to 20 pounds and are found 

in mostly 150 to 225 feet of water as they 

follow the herring and other food sources. 

Downriggers are a must to get your lure/bait 

to the target area. This fishery is followed 

by the summer salmon season from May to 

August. The resident winter fish are joined 

by migrating salmon and fishing heats up all 

over the area. Fish are found in shallower 

water from 30 to 200 feet. 

HARWOOD ISLAND: Located just 

west of Powell River and accessible to small 

boats, you will find great fishing all around 

this island. Troll your gear from 60 to 180 

feet of water or drop your favourite jig.

snapper (yellow eye). This is also the place for dungeness crab. Two 

halibut over 60 pounds were caught here last year. 

WESTVIEW/MILL: This area is directly in front of Powell River 

and is the most underrated fishing ground, accessible by rowboat 

or fishing machine. You basically pull out of the harbour, drop your 

gear and have a chance at hooking salmon, cod or, as one angler 

found out last year, a halibut. This summer, after almost 10 years, the 

popular fishing pier near the ferry ramp will be back. Pack a lunch, 

book or coffee and cast away overlooking our newly retrofitted 

harbour. No charge for the best view and sunsets on the Sunshine 

Coast. 

GRANT REEFS: This is arguably the favourite local hot spot 

and for good reason. Situated west of Powell River, it’s smack in the 

middle of the Pacific salmon migration route. From May through 

September many fishing dreams come true in this area. Large 

chinook, bottom fish and some coho stop to feed on these grounds 

for days at a time. Troll from 30 to 180 feet or use your favourite jig. 

LUND AND IRON MINES: Just 25 minutes north of Powell 

River, you can launch in Lund and fish just outside the harbour and 

work your way south to the Iron Mines or north to Sarah Point. Once

again, trolling depth is from 60 to 180 feet. 

LANG CREEK ESTUARY: This area is abuzz with activity 

during August and September as chinook, coho, chum and pink 

salmon return to the hatchery. This fishery is accessible by beach, 

car topper or fishing machine making it accessible to anyone. All the 

fish here are at their prime including chinooks from 10 to 40-plus 

pounds and coho from five to 20-plus pounds. 

FLY FISHING: Fly fishermen be warned, have lots of backing. 

Troll, jig, spin-cast or double-haul your fly to catch these big boys. 

These are just a few of the local hot spots and generally if the 

weather is good, all hot spots are very accessible. Texada and 

Harwood islands also provide a wind break if the weather picks 

up. This enables anglers with smaller boats around 14 feet to access 

prime spots. 

PRAWNS/CRABS: This fishery is one of the tastiest. Prawns are 

found throughout the Powell River area in about 250 to 400 feet of 

water. Lower your prawn traps to the bottom, retrieve after about 

four to six hours and enjoy. Crabs are found mostly around Harwood 

and Savary islands in about 25 to 150 feet of water.

HIKING 

There is a vast network of hiking trails in the 

Powell River area, both near to town and farther 

out in the wilderness. Check with the Powell 

River Visitor Centre and local outdoor equipment 

stores and guide services for the level and duration 

of challenge that will best suit your desires. 

SUNSHINE COAST TRAIL 

Sunshine Coast Trail (SCT) is about 180 

kilometres of West Coast wilderness exploration 

running from Sarah Point in the world-famous 

Desolation Sound Marine Park in the north, 

to the Saltery Bay ferry terminal in the south, 

spanning the entire length of the Upper Sunshine 

Coast. The trail affords panoramic views and a 

wide variety of vegetation and wildlife. 

Hikers can enter and exit at several points 

along the way. There are also two bed and 

breakfasts for those who wish to spoil 

themselves after trekking through the forest. 

Off-trail lodging is also available, as is 

transport to and from the trail each day. This 

allows the hiker to travel lightly and be taken 

to the trail section of choice in the morning, 

and then picked up in the afternoon at the end 

of the hike, to be brought to the comfort of a 

hotel room or a bed and breakfast. 

Hikers who want the full adventure of spending 

more than a few days on the trail will find 

campsites or shelters along the way. Most sites 

are developed, while others are rudimentary.

SHELTERS 

IN THE SKY 

Providing a place out of the elements, sun, wind or 

rain, nine shelters now dot Sunshine Coast Trail. They 

were all built by Powell River Parks and Wilderness 

Society (PRPAWS), BOMB Squad (Bloody Old Men’s 

Brigade) and other community volunteers. Hikers can 

traverse the entire 180-kilometre trail from Sarah Point 

to Saltery Bay or travel over shorter sections.

Moving through the myriad of trails in and around Powell 

River on horseback provides a constantly changing picture. 

Looking up, you see tree branches framing the sky; looking 

down, you see a sea of green on the forest floor. 

In season bushes with bright red huckleberries or salmonberries, 

provide a contrasting colour. Lush green moss covers 

fallen logs interspersed with fungi in colours from bright orange 

to skin-tone. Moss hanging from tree branches gives an 

otherworldly look as you peer into the woods. 

It’s a tranquil environment. Once high up on a horse, all 

your cares fall away as you and your four-legged companion 

head out away from the noise of civilization found on roadways. 

Accompanying the sound of horse hooves along the trail 

beds are warbling birds and chirping chipmunks that love 

to tease those passing by, mocking those who cannot join in 

their quick climb up a tree trunk. 

With the ocean at its front door and lakes sprinkled 

throughout the backcountry, riders and their horses can be 

seen cooling off in the water to offset the heat of summer. 

Riding in the spring and summer has its own appeal. There 

are even opportunities in winter months.

FESTIVALS 

& FUN 

BLACKBERRY FESTIVAL 

Blackberries have been enjoyed for thousands 

of years. But in Powell River, they are celebrated 

like nowhere else in the world. Blackberry vines of 

various wild and cultivated varieties grow in many 

temperate regions of the world including Chile, 

New Zealand, Europe and here in the Pacific 

Northwest region of North America. The climate 

and growing conditions on the Sunshine Coast 

are perfect for the blackberry, and it thrives here 

in sometimes overwhelming abundance. 

Blackberries’ natural best is by the end of 

August, and that’s when Powell River holds 

its annual Blackberry Festival. The weeklong 

celebrations include blackberry wine-making 

and tasting, a wine and cheese reception, 

concerts and the blackberry express dessert 

delivery. At the Open Air Market, the blackberry 

theme continues with pie-eating contests, 

a blackberry toss, and plenty of wonderful 

blackberry treats. 

Blackberry Festival street party marks the end 

of the week of celebrations. 2013 marks its 30th 

year. Marine Avenue is closed off for the evening 

as thousands of people make their way through 

an evening of open-air partying. The street is 

filled with music, fun and fabulous food, with 

blackberry specialties to enjoy. Merchants set 

up small, open-air shops along the sidewalks, 

musicians find a spot, and the entire avenue 

fills to the brim with people. Wander the street 

and take in all the fun.

SEA FAIR 

Powell River Sea Fair has been a favourite 

summer celebration for years. Residents and 

visitors alike share festivities that include a 

parade, midway, fireworks and vendor booths. 

Local musicians are on stage at the Rotary 

Pavilion for two and a half days. A talent contest 

is open to a variety of ages. 

Families, individuals and businesses are invited to 

participate in the sandcastle contest. 

In the build-up to the festival, people follow 

clues in the annual Sea Fair treasure hunt and 

businesses decorate in the current year’s theme. 

SUNSHINE MUSIC 

FESTIVAL 

Prior to every Labour Day Weekend for 

the past 30 years, a giant tent rises from the 

ground at Palm Beach Park. A stage is erected, 

food and craft booths are set up and then the 

people arrive. They are fans of eclectic music, 

socializing and tasty morsels that are prepared 

for them. Music is the biggest draw for the 

annual rite of passage that means summer is 

drawing to a close. It’s a time for people to enjoy 

the laid-back days before busy schedules take 

over. Deliberately kept small with reasonable 

ticket prices, the family-friendly festival attracts 

more than 200 applications from performers. 

The musical lineup is a balance that keeps 

people coming back year after year.

Living by the sea provides opportunity 

to celebrate its bounty. Prawns, oysters and 

clams are the stars to this annual event which

Many facets of art can be found in Powell River. 

Starting with Tla’amin First Nations' painting, basket 

weaving and carvings, from small story poles to large 

ones at Westview Viewpoint, the first peoples tell 

their stories that have beginnings back in the curtains 

of history. A historic collection of black and white 

photographs by Rod Lemay from the early part of the 

20th century tell the story of the industrialization of 

the area. 

Today’s artists work in a variety of mediums —fabric 

arts like quilting, wood carving, weaving, knitting, 

painting, sculpting, pottery, art cards, photography 

and jewellery. 

In addition to retail galleries, there are countless

groups and organizations in the community, adding 

colour and form to festivals, craft fairs and other 

events. Their passion for creation provides depth to 

the many levels of society and makes a place more 

livable. Their art springs from within, is made visible 

and then shared. It is with the sharing that the joy 

of creation is enhanced, returning to the creator and 

then evolving into even more works of art.

Open Air Market: Traditionally, the last Saturday 

of April is the opening for the weekly 

gathering of farmers, crafts people and eager 

buyers. A range of entertainment and 

goodies puts everyone in a happy mood. 

MAY 10 - 12 HOME SHOW 

Powell River Home Show: an annual display 

of products for the home and garden shown 

in booths that fill the Powell River Recreation 

Complex and attract thousands of people. 

JUNE 16 & 17 MEN'S MALASPINA 

Men’s Malaspina Open: Local and out-of-town 

golfers take on the greens at Myrtle Point Golf 

Club. The event includes a practice round, 

horse race and an awards banquet. 

JULY 1 CANADA DAY 

A giant bonfire finishes off the evening of 

Canada’s birthday celebrations. This family-friendly 

event features children’s activities, 

entertainment and munchies. 

JULY 2 BC BIKE RACE 

Hundreds of cyclists will ride through 

many of the community trails and set up 

camp overnight at Willingdon Beach for 

one leg of a seven-day mountain bike race. 

APRIL 28 MARATHON SHUFFLE 

This is the 20th year that runners and shufflers 

have traversed Sunshine Coast Trail 

from Malaspina Road to Shinglemill Bistro 

on Powell Lake. The 29-kilometre and 

shorter 12-kilometre half shuffle follow 

great trails through old growth, temperate 

rain forest along creeks and lakeshores. 

MAY 24 - 26 LUND SHELLFISH 

Lund Shellfish Festival celebrates the bounty 

of the sea, oysters, clams, mussels and 

other delicious offerings. 

JUNE 23 GARDEN TOUR 

Powell River’s Annual Garden Tour attracts 

hundreds of people who view botanical 

creations throughout the district. 

JULY 6 - 7 SANDCASTLES 

Texada Island Sandcastle Weekend: Fun in 

the sun, ball tournaments, lip synch contest, 

food, a parade and a sandcastle competition 

make this event a highlight of the summer. 

JULY 26 - 28 SEA FAIR 

50th anniversary of the annual summer 

celebration at Willingdon Beach. Entertainment 

night and day, midway, booths, 

a parade and fireworks all attract a happy 

throng of people.

JULY 28 SAVARY ISLAND TRIATHLON 

Gathering on a small island in the Pacific, 

individuals and teams of up to three members 

participate in two levels, competitive 

or recreational, for a fun triathlon. They 

compete in a five-kilometre run, 700-metre 

swim and a 12-kilometre cycling route. 

AUG 5 BC DAY 

First Monday in August is a statutory holiday 

where many people spend time with 

family and friends, camping and enjoying 

beautiful scenery. 

AUG 17 & 18 ART IN THE PARK 

Arts Alive in the Park: Visual and performing 

artists gather at Willingdon Beach to 

create a special weekend that forms the end 

of the Blackberry Festival. 

AUG 31 & SEPT 1 

SUNSHINE MUSIC FESTIVAL 

The 32nd annual weekend of eclectic performances 

at Palm Beach Park. Attendees 

have been known to leave the park for a 

dip in the ocean. Music, food and fun on 

the traditional farewell to summer. 

JULY 21 TEXADA FLY-IN 

Enjoy a pancake breakfast then watch as 

airplanes fly in, explore aircraft displays, 

take part in contests and listen to aviation 

speakers all at Texada airport. A barbecue 

lunch keeps everybody happy. 

AUG 10 - 17 BLACKBERRY FEST 

An annual fete of the blackberry includes 

a multitude of events, highlighted by a 

street party along Marine Avenue on Friday, 

August 16. 

SEPT 21 & 22 FALL FAIR 

Harvest abundance is for sale and 

exhibit at this very popular event at 

Paradise Valley Exhibition Park. Music 

and a variety of tasty temptations are 

enjoyed by everyone, toddlers through 

seniors.

SUNSHINE COAST ART CRAWL 

From Langdale to Lund. More than 70 artist 

studios are open to visitors on this selfdirected 

tour of Sunshine Coast creativity.

Marking the beginning of Christmas season, 

this festival is a fundraiser for Powell 

River Association for Community Living. 

Trees and wreaths are auctioned off at a gala 

dinner. Other seasonal activities are held 

during the festival.

OCT 19 PACIFIC SALMON GALA 

Pacific Salmon Society Dinner: An annual 

fundraiser for the preservation of salmon 

stocks, this dinner is one of the highlights 

of the fall season. 

DEC 13 - 14 CAROLS 

Carols by Candlelight: Choirs from the 

Powell River Academy of Music and guest 

performers fill Dwight Hall with sounds of 

the season.
