of two island groups separated by the
Columbus Passage. To the west are the Caicos
Islands: West Caicos, Providenciales, North
Caicos, Middle Caicos, East Caicos, and South
Caicos. To the east are the Turks Islands:
Grand Turk and Salt Cay.
The country totals 166 square miles of land
among the eight islands and forty small cays.

History
Destination 2015 Turks & Caicos Islands
A
s early as 750 AD, the Lucayan Indians were
the first to enjoy the Turks & Caicos Islands’
bounty, until the arrival of Columbus at Grand
Turk brought a rapid end to their idyllic lifestyle. In
the late 1600s, Bermudian salt rakers harvested “white
gold” from the salinas on South Caicos, Grand Turk,
and Salt Cay. A century later, British Loyalists from
the States established Sea Island cotton plantations in
the Caicos Islands. The slaves (and ruins) left behind
form the living history you find here today.
Other historic ventures included whaling, sisal and
sponge harvesting, and raiding of passing boats by
notorious pirates. In the early 1960s and ’70s, Grand
Turk was home to American military bases and John
Glenn’s Mercury capsule splashdown. The capital,
along with South Caicos and, later on, Providenciales,
played host to visitors seeking sun, sand, and sea and
the rest, as they say, is history.

kaleidoscope, the talcum-soft, ivory sand beaches
that line Turks & Caicos’ shores are among the
finest and most uncrowded in the world.
What’s your pleasure? Whether you sunbathe or stroll,
romance or picnic, play volleyball, build a sand castle,
search for treasures, or soak in a sunset, you’ll find a
beach for you.
Notable is that all of the country’s beaches are public
from the low tide line to the dune line, with beach
access signs on Providenciales making it easy to find
your way to shore.
Many of the beaches are protected as part of land and
sea national parks, and you are encouraged to
remember to “take only photos, leave only footprints.”
Award-winning Grace Bay Beach offers sugary sand,
sweeping vistas, and sun-flavoured sea breezes.

plenty to do for those who crave activity.
Besides ever-popular snorkeling and scuba diving, you
can experience parasailing, windsurfing, water-skiing,
kiteboarding, paddleboarding, and deep-sea, reef, and
bonefishing. Sail and motorboats share the water with
kayaks and jet skis. On land, you can golf and play
tennis, ride a cycle or horse, pump iron, cheer on a
soccer team, or partake in a tour of local sights. Soak
in island culture as you dance the night away to
Caribbean vibes at a resort or local bar.
But don’t worry, dozing in a beach lounger with frosty
glass at your side is still allowed.

to eat on Providenciales alone. Most resorts boast
upscale dining rooms, serving specialties hand-crafted

Where: The Turks & Caicos Islands are 575 miles southeast of Miami — a mere 70 minutes flying time — with the Bahamas 30 miles
to the northwest and the Dominican Republic 100 miles to the southeast.
The Turks & Caicos total 166 square miles of land area on eight islands and forty small cays and are encircled by one of the largest
coral reefs in the world. The country’s population is approximately 32,000.
Travel: Providenciales International Airport is the main port of entry for air travellers. A major terminal expansion project is
scheduled for completion in 2015. Direct flights are available via major carriers from Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Dallas, Miami,
Newark, New York, and Philadelphia in the U.S. and from Halifax (seasonal), Montreal, Ottawa (seasonal) and Toronto in
Canada. There is a connection via Nassau to London/Heathrow, as well as direct flights to Nassau, Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican
Republic, and Puerto Rico. There are scheduled inter-island air and ferry services, as well as FBOs to cater to private planes.
Talk: English, with many other languages spoken by a multi-cultural resident population.
Time: Eastern Daylight Savings Time observed all year (GMT –5:00).
Money: US dollar. Travellers’ checks in US dollars and American Express, VISA, and MasterCard are welcomed at many locations.
Temperature: The average year-round temperature is 83ºF (28ºC). The hottest months are September and October, when the temperature
can reach 90 to 95ºF (33 to 35ºC). Steady easterly tradewinds temper the heat. Average annual rainfall is 40 inches.
Getting in: Passports are required, along with a valid onward or return ticket for non-residents. Visitors can stay up to 90 days.
Getting out: Departure tax is US$20 for all persons two years and older.
Customs: Visitors may bring in duty free one carton of cigarettes or cigars, one bottle of liquor or wine and some perfume. Importing
firearms, spear guns, Hawaiian slings, controlled drugs, and pornography are illegal.
Transport: You can use a valid driver’s license from home when renting vehicles. Driving is on the left-hand side of the road. Give
way at all roundabouts: give way to any vehicle approaching from your right. Seat belt laws are strictly enforced. Taxis are abundant
throughout the Islands, but are not metered.

Telecommunications: LIME, Islandcom, and Digicel are service providers on a totally digital network, including pre-paid phone
cards, pre-paid cellular phones, credit card, and calling card options, with broadband Internet service. Most resorts offer wireless
Internet connection and there are several private Internet “cafés.” Digicel and Islandcom Wireless operate GSM mobile networks
and offer 4G wireless broadband Internet. International roaming is available via most major US carriers.

Electricity: 120/240 volts, 60 Hz, as in U.S.
Courier: FedEx, UPS, and Island Bargains provide incoming delivery service, with outgoing service provided by FedEx and DHL,
with offices on Providenciales and Grand Turk.
Banks: Local banks are open on weekdays from 8:30 AM to 3 PM and on Friday until 5 PM. There are some Cirrus ATMs.
Post: The Post Office and Philatelic Bureau in Providenciales is located downtown in Butterfield Square. In Grand Turk, the Post
Office is on Front Street, with the Philatelic Bureau on Church Folly. The Islands are known for their varied and colourful stamp
issues. You can typically buy stamps and post mail from your resort
.
Medical: There are no endemic tropical diseases. There are large, modern hospitals on Grand Turk and Providenciales. Both offer
a full range of services including: 24/7 emergency room, operating theatres, diagnostic imaging, maternity suites, dialysis suites,
blood bank, physiotherapy, and dentistry. There are a recompression chamber, private medical centres, private dentists, and private
pharmacies. In a medical emergency, patients can be flown to Miami or Nassau via air ambulance. Dial 911 in case of emergency.
Media: Multi-channel satellite television is received from the U.S. and Canada and transmitted via cable and over the air. Visitor
targeted programming is shown on TCeye-TV on Channel 5 in your hotel room. You can listen to a number of local radio stations,
peruse two newspapers, and page through several magazines about the Islands.
Government: TCI is a British Crown colony. There is a Queen-appointed governor, HE Peter Beckingham, and elected ministerial
government led by Premier Dr. Rufus Ewing.
Religion: Churches are the centre of community life and there are many faiths represented in the Islands, including: Adventist,
Anglican, Assembly of God, Baha’i, Baptist, Catholic, Church of God of Prophecy, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints,
Episcopal, Faith Tabernacle Church of God, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Methodist and Pentecostal. Visitors are always welcome.

Flag: The National Flag of the Turks & Caicos Islands is set on a navy blue background. The Islands’ Coat of Arms has a shield
of a Queen Conch shell, a Spiny Lobster and a Turks Head Cactus. At the top of the shield is a wreath made up of two sisal plants
with a pelican between them. The shield, supported on either side by a flamingo, is located on the right hand side of the flag while
a miniature of the British flag — the Union Jack — is in the upper left hand corner.
National symbols: The National Bird is the Brown Pelican. The National Plant is Island Heather, found nowhere else in the
world. The National Tree is the Caribbean Pine. The National Costume consists of white cotton dresses tied at the waist for women
and simple shirts and loose pants for men, with straw hats. Colours representing the various islands are displayed on the sleeves
and bases of the dresses (see page 95). The National Song is “This Land of Ours,” by Rev. E.C. Howell, PhD. Peas and Hominy
(Grits) with Dry Conch are symbolic island fare.
Pets: Incoming pets must have an import permit, veterinary health and vaccination certificates, and lab test results to be submitted
at your port of entry for clearance by the TCI Department of Agriculture, Animal Health Services.
Tipping: It’s customary to tip 15% in restaurants; this is above and beyond the 10% government service tax that is added to all
restaurant bills. Much appreciated are tips to taxi drivers, tour guides, watersports captains and crews, and providers of beauty and
spa services.
