2a • The Butner-Creedmoor News, Thursday, October 17, 2013 Friends, Family & Neighbors Creedmoor United Methodist Church has a new astor. He is the Rev. Jared Hanson. He is the former ssociate Christian Education Pastor at Pine Valley MC in Wilmington, NC, from 2009-2013. The Rev. Hanson, originally from Ohio, moved to Durham with his family when he was eight years old and considers this posting as having come full circle. “I consider this area home territory,” he says. He is a graduate of NC State University, with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy. Originally in college to work his way into the film industry, the Rev. Hanson said that fellow filmmakers were more interested in his views on life and the Church. “People on movie sets would want to talk to me about God, faith, doubts, etc., and my then pastor at First Baptist Church in Raleigh told me he thought I had the gifts and skills to go into the ministry,” he says. After graduating from Duke Divinity School in 2004, the Rev. Hanson became pastor of Fairview UMC in Elon for five years. He says a small church was a good place to “get the fundamentals of ministry and how to run a church on a day-to-day basis.” After five years in Elon, the Rev. Hanson, his wife, Jenny, and their children moved to Wilmington for his assignment as the Christian Education Pastor of the significantly larger Pine Valley UMC. “I was responsible for Christian Education from cradle to grave, overseeing children’s ministries, adult Bible studies, etc., “ he says. The experience was a good one for the pastor. “Coming from a smaller church in Elon, I learned just how different churches can be run, based on the size and needs of the different congregations,” the Rev. anson says. After the four-year assignment in Wilmington, the ev. Hanson was then given the opportunity to become he current pastor at Creedmoor UMC. “I was ready to be a pastor at a place larger than y first church,” he says. The Rev. Hanson’s tenure began on June 25th of his year. In the four months that have followed, he as been able to begin to gauge the unique needs of is new congregation, and, by extension, his new ometown. “I’ve noticed Creedmoor is in a time of transition nd growth,” he says. “In the church, we are xperiencing a transition of leadership and growth of ounger families, and just learning how to navigate hose changes.” When asked where he sees Creedmoor UMC going n the next five years, the pastor was optimistic. “I just see this church growing in our influence, haring God’s love with the rich and the poor alike, eing a ministry to schools and other community rganizations.” Creedmoor UMC is located at 214 Park Avenue. he church website is www.creedmoorumc.com, and he phone number is 919-528-3987. The Butner-Creedmoor News, Thursday, October 17, 2013 3a Upcoming Events And Activities CREEDMOOR WELLNESS CLASSES The following classes are being offered at the Creedmoor Wellness Center in Creedmoor: Gentle Yoga Class: Mondays, 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m.; and Thursdays, 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. Low Impact Aerobics classes are held on Wednesdays, 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. The cost is $5.00 per class. HAT, COAT, TOY DRIVE The Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church will sponsor its annual Hat & Coat / Toy Drive beginning Wednesday, October 2nd through December 15th. Donations can be dropped off at one of three Dollar General stores in the area (Stem, Butner or Creedmoor). This drive will benefit families in need during the winter months and also pro-vide them a Christmas that they would other-wise not have. Monetary donations will also be accepted. FOOD PANTRY HOURS Starting Thursday, September 26th, the new hours for Union Chapel MBC Outreach Food Pantry, will be from 4 p.m. until 5 p.m. every second and fourth Thursday of each month.
