12b The Butner-Creedmoor News, Thursday, October 17, 2013 ECA Centennial Celebration October 27 North Carolina Cooperative Extension will hold a centennial gala Oct. 27 in Raleigh to celebrate 100 years of home demonstration programs in North Carolina. Extension invites former Extension Homemaker Club members, current members of the Extension and Community Association and those involved with extension’s family and consumer sciences program to attend this historic event at N.C. State University’s McKimmon Center. In Granville County, the Extension Volunteer Association is a spin-off of the ECA organization. Through the educational guidance and researched-based information provided by N.C. Cooperative Extension’s family and consumer sciences agents and specialists based at N.C. State and N.C. A&T State universities, ECA is a grassroots institution that has actively addressed the needs of families in their communities for 100 years. EVA has continued in the tradition of education and community service. The ECA centennial gala at N.C. State will begin at 3:30 p.m. — weather permitting — with an oppor-tunity to see engraved bricks that have been placed in the Jane McKimmon Garden at McKimmon Center honoring the women of ECA, family and consumer sciences and their supporters. Also there will be exhibits to showcase the multifaceted work of ECA in the state and a time to reconnect with old and new friends. The dinner, which begins at 5 p. m., will include a multimedia presentation on the history of ECA. In addition, 25 new members will be inducted into the Jane S. McKimmon, North Carolina’s first woman home demonstration extension agent, Vance - Granville Community College’s Chi Beta Chi chapter of Phi Beta Lambda, the business student organization, recently elected officers for the 2013-2014 year. New officers were installed and members were inducted at a ceremony on September 24th on VGCC’s Main Campus. The officers include president David Henry of Macon, vice president Eric Person of Kittrell, secretary Hannah Davis of Henderson, treasurer Dashaun Cheek of Oxford, and Veronica Yount of Townsville and Jessica Nava of Oxford, who are sharing the responsibility of the office of reporter/historian. By 1913, the girls’ mothers had learned to can so well, they began to ask for clubs where they might learn other skills for the home. Thus home demonstration clubs — later named Extension Homemakers and ECA today — were born in North Carolina. Duke Energy Presents Check Duke Energy representatives presented a check recently to Public Safety Secretary Frank Perry for approximately $139,000 as payment for Central Prison’s participation in the Duke Energy Demand Response Automation program. During peak summer demand periods, customers who elect to participate in the program agree to curtail usage until demand decreases. Shifting peak customer demand can help to delay the need to build new power plants. When activated, the program requires the Central Prison complex to curtail its usage of power from the electric grid for non-essential systems and operate under its own generator power. During the past year, Central Prison successfully participated in two curtailment events for about six hours each. “This program is one example of how DPS is working to be wise stewards of taxpayer dollars,” said Secretary Frank Perry. “We look forward to working with our partners at Duke Energy for future efficiencies and savings on our energy bills.” Today’s payment represents a one-time incentive for participation in the Demand Response Automation program. Central Prison is receiving additional savings through monthly reductions in its electricity bill and performance credits for each successful curtailment. Over the past year, these credits have resulted in additional savings of about $56,000. Central Prison’s utility plant is equipped with four large generators, which can be fueled by diesel or natural gas. They are capable of completely powering the entire Central Prison complex including the prison, hospital, mental heath center and all support buildings. During times of peak energy usage, like on hot summer days, Central Prison disconnects from the power grid and runs off power from its own generators. This lessens the load on the power grid, making more electricity available for other customers. Hargrove Named Chair Of Public Services S t e v e n Hargrove of Henderson, a Criminal Justice Technology instructor at V ance-Granville Community College, was recently promoted to lead a department that includes several of the college’s curriculum programs that train students to serve the public. As Public Services department chair, he now oversees the VGCC Culinary Arts, Cosmetology and Paralegal Technology programs while also serving as head of the Criminal Justice program. Hargrove has been a VGCC instructor since 2002 and previously worked as a residential coordinator for VGFW Area Mental Health. A native of Granville County, Hargrove graduated from J. F. Webb High School. He earned a B.S. in Criminal Justice at North Carolina Central University, where he was inducted into the Golden Key National Honor Society. He later returned to NCCU to complete a master’s degree in Sociology, including additional coursework in Criminal Justice. Active in the community, Hargrove serves as pastor of White Rock Missionary Baptist Church in the Berea community of Oxford and has directed local choirs, including the V ance-Granville Community Choir, a group of college students, faculty and staff.
