Community Building
Committee, 2) Parks and
Recreation Committee, 3)
Former President and
Member of Butner
Citizens Planning Ahead
(BCPA).
How long have you
lived in the town or city
that you would like to
represent? I have lived
here for 6 plus years.
Why are you running
for office? (In 50 words or
less) Vision - to make
ideas a reality! This
journey is still moving
forward. Looking on the
horizon I want to continue
fiscal responsibility,
minimize tax burden to
the citizens, continue
economic growth while
preserving our
community, transit
system access. Maintain
an open door policy for the
citizens to voice their
opinion and/or state
issues they have. Overall
a great deal has been
accomplished while I
have been in office and I
definitely want to
continue this vision as a
Butner
Town
Councilman.
What are your top 3
priorities, and how will
you get them done? (In
100 words or less):
Increase our Revenue
Base - Creating an
atmosphere of
cooperation with Butner
Town Council, Granville
County Government/
Chamber of Commerce
and The NC League of
Municipalities for
developing strategies to
attract businesses to our
area.
Continue my
commitment to fiscal
responsibility. Always
review the budget in
detail with the Town
Council, Financial Officer
and Town Manager to
make sure all cost are
justified and all efforts to
minimize taxes to the
taxpayer are performed.
Allow growth but not
to sacrifice our Small
Town atmosphere. Work
with the Planning Board,
Board of Adjustments,
Kerr-Tar Council of
Government, and Butner
Town Council to develop
a plan for growth without
disturbing the charm of
our town.
Why should voters
vote for you? (In 50 words
or less): I believe the best
way to facilitate change is
to get involved in
community and
g o v e r n m e n t
organizations. I have
done just that in the time
I have lived in Butner.
This enabled me to learn
who is in our community
and what aspects of our
town they like and what
needs to change. Being a
Town Councilman was a
way to effect the changes
asked by the citizens in
the community and so it
is understood that they
have a voice with me as
councilman.
As of press time, we
had not heard back from
James J. Jones, and
William E. (Bill)
McKellar.
How long have you lived
in the town or city that you
would like to represent?
1977 to present.
Why are you running for
office? (In 50 words or less):
To continue to pole the
citizens of Stem and work for
them and with them, and, to
complete what we have
started on, such as, the
Greenway, street payments,
police stations, and more
equipment for the Kiddie
Park.
What are your top 3
priorities, and how will you
words or less):
1) To keep the town’s
trust, 2) Get more people
involved in town business, 3)
To help Stem move forward.
Why should voters vote
Because I’m trustworthy and
the past 3 years.
Military Service (if
any):
Community & Civic
Service: Currently a
commissioner for the Town
of Stem, member of Stem
Ruritan Club, and
numerous Realtor
organizations.
How long have you
lived in the town or city
that you would like to
represent? I have lived in
the Stem area for 16 years
and in the town limits
going on 6 years.
Why are you running
for office? (In 50 words or
less): My reason for seeking
the Mayor seat is simple. “I
truly love our community!”
We desperately need new
leadership without
controversy. For the first
time in years the Board of
Commissioners works
together and wants to see
our town thrive. Our
citizens deserve
p r o f e s s i o n a l
representation they can be
proud of.
What are your top 3
priorities, and how will you
get them done? (In 100
words or less):
Town organization,
which encompasses many
things from getting our
town documents back in
the town hall, to
remodeling our current
town hall for future use.
Build a new town hall,
police station and
community center for our
citizens.
The #1 complaint from
citizens is they want
increased law enforcement.
It’s time to hire full time
police officers with the
increased population and
incidents in Stem that get
involved in our community.
We will continue to
work with our regional
planner to assist us in
accomplishing our goals
with professional guidance
and insight into grants for
our town.
Why should voters vote
for you? (In 50 words or
less): I am asking for my
neighbors to vote for me as
their Mayor. I will
represent our town with
professionalism, will work
hard to change the face of
our town, listen to our
citizens and make sure
their concerns are in the
fore front of decisions we
make.
Stem Town
Commissioners
There are three Stem
Town Commissioner seats
up for election. Current
Town Commissioners,
Lonnie M. Cole, Sr.,
Kenneth C. McLamb and
Kevin Easter have all
filed for re-election. The
incumbents are
challenged by Nancy
Mace, Nancy Compton,
Mary Cordrey, Kevin A.
Rumsey and Casey Dover.
Mary Cordrey
OFFICE SOUGHT:
Commissioner for the
Town of Stem.
Family: Daughter
Lisa Mangum and
husband
Joe;
grandchildren Cory
Brown, Harrison Hopkins
and Tara Mangum.
Education: I am a
graduate of Southport
High School, in Southport
North Carolina, where I
was the salutatorian for
my class; and have
certification in computer
technology from
Brunswick Community
College in Supply, North
Carolina. Over the past
30+ years, I have held
several positions, in the
workplace, that required
extensive clerical,
administrative and
managerial training.
Work Experience:
Previously held the
position of clerk for the
Town of Stem. For several
years I was the Public
Relations Administrator
for JM Manufacturing in
Butner. Before relocating
to the Stem area, I retired
from the Progress Energy
Nuclear Site, located in
Southport, North
Carolina, as the Fleet
Service Manager. These
positions afforded me
several opportunities to
travel and promote the
objectives of the
companies I represented.
Military Service (if
any): I was not active
military personnel;
however, I was married to
a Command Sergeant
Major in the United
States Army for 32 years,
and fully support and
endorse our military.
Community & Civic
Service: Civic service is a
privilege
and
responsibility that I
believe in and encourage
others to volunteer their
time and energy too. I am
a loyal supporter and
advocate for Families
Living Violence Free, a
non-profit outreach
program in Oxford, that
helps to provide
assistance to the victims
and survivors of domestic
abuse. The Granville
County Relay for Life is
another local event that I
endorse and help to
promote. I have
participated and assisted
with the “Meals On
Wheels” program in
Granville County,
specifically the Stem
area. My dedication to
community and civic
service extends into the
aid and outreach that my
church, New Birth
Worship Center, sponsors
throughout the Butner-
Stem-Creedmoor areas.
How long have you
lived in the town or city
that you would like to
represent? I relocated to
the Stem area 7 years ago,
and in that time have
grown to love and
appreciate the small town
feel that it offers to
residents.
Why are you running
for office? (In 50 words or
less): Personally, I view
the opportunity of
becoming a commissioner,
as a chance to address
and promote the concerns
and interests of the town;
and, accomplishing this
by cultivating and
encouraging interaction
between the citizens and
elected officials. I am
dedicated to an effective
way, and plan to
accomplish this by listing
to what citizen’s say.
What are your top 3
priorities, and how will
you get them done? (In
100 words or less): If
elected, there are several
initiatives that I am eager
to accomplish. First it is
imperative to insure the
continued maintenance
and improvement of the
town’s infrastructure,
such as streets, signage,
street lamps and
aesthetic development.
There is a desire to
renovate the town hall/
police station. As a
commissioner, my
obligation is to seek out
and support the most
economically responsible
solution for this. The
“Kiddie Park”, located on
Franklin Street, is in
need of updating with the
intention of making it
appealing to children of
various ages. I fully
support endeavors to
create and establish
“Greenways” in the town,
which will help provide
fitness, health and
recreation while
maintaining natural
conservation.
Why should voters
vote for you? (In 50 words
or less): The Town of Stem
is growing, and it is
important to encourage
both expansion and
inclusion; while
preserving the town’s
history and overall
appeal. The position that
I am seeking should be
viewed as having a job
description that requires
p e r f o r m a n c e
expectations. I am
committed to excellence
professionalism, integrity
while conducting
business with
and achieving results.
