Brooke Fletcher, quayla Swann, Taylor ickliter, Katya Davis and anielle Schmid were onored prior to the start f the match. Davis’ season ended arly with an injury, but letcher, Swann, Lickliter nd Schmid did verything in their power o win their final regular eason home game as a ady Panther. Swann and Lickliter controlled at the net on perfectly timely sets by Schmid. Fletcher time and time again made the spectacular digs to keep the ball alive for the Lady Panthers. Cheyenne Taylor and Megan Taylor provided support for the seniors on the floor and the rest of the team cheered on each point during the win. The Lady Panthers opened the first round of the Tar Roanoke Athletic Conference Volleyball Playoffs with a three set (25-14, 25-7 and 25-11) win over Northwest Halifax. The Panthers used heir superior athleticism o overpower KIPP Pride. he Panthers took 45 hots on goal with Peyton homas connecting with hree goals. Noe eronimo added a goal nd two assist. Wayne owerton also had an ssist in the match. Luis Briones and Zach antaffa each had one save in goal for the Panthers. Granville Central will host Webb on October 17 at 6:00 pm and then finish the regular season with three straight road games. The Panthers stand at 13-3-1 and 2-0 in conference action. 2013 Granville Central Soccer Seniors Noe Geronimo, Peyton Thomas, Noah Parrott and Wayne Howerton. Panthers Earn First Conference Win The Granville Central Football program has had a season of first, but none are more important than their first conference win. The Panthers defeated Weldon 16-8 for the first conference win in football history. Weldon jumped out to an early lead 8-0 lead. Granville Central did exactly what was expected and that was fight back. Granville Central scored on a Bryce Parrott run from one yard out to tie the game at 8-8. Jay Parker connected with Parrott for the Panthers second touchdown on the night. Granville Central led 16- 8 at the half. Shaquille Freeman intercepted a Weldon pass to end any hopes of a Weldon comeback. Granville Central held on for their first Tar Roanoke Conference win. Granville Central moves to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in conference action. The Panthers will host Southeast Halifax on October 18 at 7:30 pm. Sean Bowman netted 403 rushing yards on 22 carries in the conference opener. The opening drive for the Vikings set the tone for the game. Matt McCutcheon found Craig Wilkie wide open on the right side of the field. Wilkie took the reception in for a touchdown from 58 yards out. Kaleb Chamberlain converted the extra point and the Vikings led 7-0. The Red Rams answered with an 85 yard kickoff return for a touchdown and tied the score 7-7 with 11:30 left in the first quarter. McCutcheon found Abraham Barron open for a 24 yard gain followed by Sean Bowman slashing through the Franklinton defenders for a 54 yard gain. Greg McCalop scored from the one yard line and Chamberlain added the extra point to give the Vikings a 14-7 lead. Bowman scored from five yards out with 2:42 to go in the first quarter. Chamberlain added the PAT and the Vikings led 21-7. The Vikings took over on downs at the 35 yard line as the Red Rams failed to convert on fourth down. The stage was set for McCutcheon to fire another touchdown pass to Wilkie from 30 yards out. The PAT was good and the Vikings held a comfortable 28-7 lead. Franklinton answered with a nine yard touchdown pass from Daquan Neal to Brandon Fuller. Jacob Woodward converted the PAT and the Red Rams trailed 28-14 with 2:11 to go in the first half. The Vikings responded with an eight play drive that ended with a one yard run by Earl Green. The PAT was good and the Vikings led 35-14 with 31 seconds left in the first half. Omari Armstrong intercepted a Red Rams pass to give the Vikings good field position. McCutcheon’s pass was picked off and Franklinton scored form 35 yards out. The Vikings led 35-21 at the half. Franklinton took the second half kickoff, but could not move the ball. Bowman ran the ball five times for 70 yards including a 23 yard touchdown. The extra point was good and the Vikings held a 42-21 lead. Greg McCalop had the defensive gem of the game catching a tipped ball while flat on his back. This gave the Vikings another opportunity to score. Bowman bounced his way down the field for an 80 yard touchdown. The Vikings did not convert the extra point after a bobbled snap. The score stood at 48-21 with 6:32 to go in the third quarter. Franklinton ran off 21 straight points to cut the lead to 48-42 with just over a minute remaining in the third quarter. The Vikings answered on the next series that featured a 45 yard reception by Earl Green and a 6 yard touchdown catch by C.J. Hurt. The Vikings led 54-42 with 10:29 to go in the game. Franklinton was determined to stay in the game and scored again at the 6:52 mark to cut the lead to 54-49. McCutcheon capped a 47 yard drive with a seven yard touchdown run to give the Vikings a 60-49 lead. McCalop’s nine yard touchdown with 1:46 remaining gave the Vikings a little cushion at 67-49. Franklinton scored and converted the two point play to cut the lead to 10 at 67-57. South Granville was able to hold off the hard charging Red Rams for the conference win.
