VGCC BACKYARD
CHICKEN CLASS
RESCHEDULED
A new Vance-
Granville Community
College Personal
Enrichment course on
raising chickens has been
rescheduled.
The one-day
“Backyard Chicken Craft”
class is now set to be held
on Saturday, March 2
from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.
(including a one-hour
lunch break), with a
classroom component at
VGCC’s Main Campus in
Vance County and a
hands-on component at
instructor Mike Holland’s
farm on Lickskillet Road
in Warren County.
Holland will help
participants understand if
keeping chickens in their
own backyards is right for
them. “In this course, I
will teach first-time
chicken-keepers about
how many and what breed
of chicken to raise, and
how to house and care for
your chickens,” Holland
said. The cost of the class
is $25 per person. The
class is scheduled to be
offered again in April in
two sessions.
Holland is also an
instructor
for
“Beekeeping Basics,” a
course for which some
spaces are available.

COSTS

Senior Services and the
Senior’s Health Insurance
Information Program
(SHIIP) will assist eligible
Medicare beneficiaries in
signing up for extra help
for prescription drug costs
during a Relay for Extra
Help event.
This event will take
place on Tuesday, March 5,
2013 from 2:00 p.m. until
6:00 p.m. at the Granville
County Senior Center in
Oxford. Help may be
available to Medicare
beneficiaries with limited
income and assets to help
pay premiums,
deductibles and co-pays,
but beneficiaries have to
apply. The following
items are required to
complete the assistance
application: (1) Social
Security and Medicare
cards (2) income
information (3) bank
account information (4)
information on Individual
Retirement Accounts.
Individuals may also
apply on-line at

“AFTERNOON TEA”
CLASS IN MARCH
Vance-Granville
Community College will
offer a course on
“Afternoon Tea,” the
tradition that is enjoying a
renaissance as fine hotels,
inns and tea rooms across
the country give guests an
opportunity to retreat from
the hurried pace of their
lives.
The course, called
“Let's Have an Afternoon
Tea,” is offered by the
college in collaboration
with The Old North State
Tea Society. Classes will
meet on VGCC’s Main
Campus in Vance County,
on Tuesdays and
Thursdays from 1 until 4
p.m., starting March 5.
The final class and
“graduation” ceremony is
an actual afternoon tea
party planned and
facilitated by the students
at Magnolia Manor in
Warrenton on March 18.
“Tea is good for your
health, and this fun,
informative class is a way
to recapture civility and
learn etiquette in a
friendly setting,” according
to the instructor for the
class, Constance Lue of
Oxford, who founded both
the Old North State Tea
Society and this class at
VGCC in 2006. Lue has
studied under the foremost
authorities on Afternoon
Tea in Great Britain and
the United States.
Students will learn
about the history of tea;
the difference between an
afternoon tea party, a royal
tea party and “High Tea;”
and the proper way to
make the best pot of tea.
They will have tastings of
a wide variety of teas
(black, white, green,
Oolongs and herbal) at
each class meeting.
Participants might use
what they learn to hold
their own tea parties for
children as well as their
adult friends. Afternoon
Tea also can be a way to
raise funds for churches
and clubs.
Completion of the
course guarantees
automatic membership in
the Old North State Tea
Society, which offers
opportunities to
participate in group visits
to various tea rooms and
tea events. The Society
also conducts charitable
service/outreach projects,
visiting schools, nursing
homes and Boys and Girls
Clubs.
The cost of the course
is $45, which includes a
valuable resource manual
with recipes for tea time,
tips on flower arranging
and a section on etiquette.

GCHS TALENT SHOW
Granville Central
High School PTO is
sponsoring a "GCHS Got
Talent" show on Friday,
March 8th. The show will
start at 7:00 p.m. and
admission is $5.00.
The PTO will be
selling pizza, candies,
drink and water, starting
at 5:45 p. m.

Things that are required to provide when
registering your child: birth certificate, proof of
address/residence; social security card, and
immunization record.
Acceptable proof of address/residence can be an
oil bill, water bill, gas bill, electric bill, mortgage
or lease agreement and they must be current.
