the game. We have to
control the tempo.” On the
Vikings Celebrate Senior Night
SG 70 DSA 60
The Vikings bounced
the Bulldogs from
Durham School of the Arts
70-60 on senior night.
Five of the eight seniors
scored in double figures in
the game.
The Vikings seniors
came to play was the best
way to describe the
opening period of the
game. Taz Strudwick and
Shawn Montren
dominated in the paint
combining for 10 points.
JC Shelley drained a three
and converted two free
throws in the period for
the Vikings. Ansar
Muhammad utilized his
defense to create a
turnover that led to an
easy basket. Brandon
Ragland aggressively
drove the lane repeatedly
looking to dish or score.
Ragland made DSA either
commit to guard him or
foul him. Ragland
converted all four
attempts from the free
throw in the first period.
South Granville held a 21-
17 lead at the end of the
first period.
Dylan McFalls and
Ryan Boltz worked hard
on the defensive end in the
second period creating
problems for DSA.
McFalls and Boltz
deflected passes and
defended well for the
Vikings. The Vikings
scoring came from the
usual suspects Studwick,
Montren Muhammad and
Shelley. Strudwick was a
terror down low. Montren
continued to hit the short
jumpers. Muhammad
kept creating easy baskets
with his defense and
Shelley was spot on from
three point range. The
Vikings led 34-33 at the
half.
Going into the third
period the Vikings knew
they had to step up the
defensive pressure and
limit the Bulldogs touches.
McFalls, Boltz,
Muhammad and junior
Gary Lash did just that in
the third quarter. The
Vikings denied the
Bulldogs the ball for much
of the quarter.
Muhammad scored six
points in the third quarter.
Lash, Strudwick, Shelley
and Boltz each scored two
points and Montren added
a free throw. The Vikings
led 49-45 with eight
minutes remaining.
In the fourth quarter
the Vikings worked the
outside game with
Muhammad and Shelley
scoring. Ragland
continued to drive the lane
and dish or get fouled.
Boltz and Montren took
advantage of inside
positioning and scored on
the Bulldogs. The Vikings
outscored DSA 21-15 in
the final period and held
on for the 70-60 senior
night win.
to fast break points.
Brooks scored four points
in the quarter. Jones
created havoc on the
boards grabbing rebound
after rebound and limiting
the Lady Bulldog attempts
in the paint. Mallory
Brogden took advantage of
a good pass by Brooks to
attempt a shot from the
right side. Brogden was
fouled and converted one
of two free throws for the
Lady Vikings. South
Granville led 24-23 at the
half.
The Lady Vikings started
the third period with
