Kaleb Hunter cored five straight points to give the Panthers a boost. Green hit another three and the South Granville lead began to shrink. The Vikings answered with three pointers by Dylan McFalls and Shelley. Granville Central cut South Granville’s lead to one with a buzzer beater by Hunter from just inside the midcourt line. Freeman’s free throws gave Granville Central a 44-43 lead early in the fourth quarter. From there the teams traded baskets until the final minute of the game. With the score tied at 53-53, Shawn Montren hit the go ahead jumper with 40 second left on the clock. Strudwick made two free throws and Shelley tacked on a technical free throw with one second remaining in the game to seal the win for the Vikings. South Granville faced Northwood in the second round of the Carolina 12 Conference tournament. No information was available from that game at press time. Granville Central finished the season with an 8-17 record and 3-13 in conference play. Coach McDaniel commented, “We must do a better job at the free-throw line and getting to those 50/50 balls. The season did not turn out the way we wanted, but wins and losses don’t always determine the success of a team. Losing 99.4% of our scoring, rebounding, assists, steals & blocked shots to graduation and transfers we knew we would have an inexperienced team on the court. The Lady anthers edged the Lady ikings 62-45 to advance o the second round in the onference tournament. Granville Central and outh Granville traded oints in the opening inutes. Tamara Crews used her quickness to drive to the basket to score four quick points for the Lady Panthers. South Granville responded with points from Tiana Jones at the free throw line and a basket by Nisah Darby. Panthers’ Coach Ken Blocker was clearly unhappy with the way the Lady Panthers started the game. Blocker called a timeout and told his team “ We are not playing our game, just settle down and run our plays. Don’t let them dictate the pace of the game. We have to control the tempo.” On the other end of the court Coach Debbie Bell high fived her players and told them to keep it up. Granville Central responded with points from Alexis Bailey and Briona Blair. Katelyn Brooks, Cameron Patrick, Darby and Jones continued to score for South Granville. The score was tied 14-14 at the end of the first period. Keena Evans started the second period on fire from beyond the arc. The Lady Panthers began to pull away from South Granville. Crews continued to penetrate and score or pass the ball to Blair for the score. Jones battled in the paint for the Lady Vikings and had success in the second quarter. Jones scored six of the Lady Vikings’ 11 points in the period. Hunter Mundy found her shot from three point land to give the Lady Vikings a boost. Darby scored on a short jumper for the Lady Vikings. Granville Central led 35- 25 at the half. The teams traded baskets in the third quarter. Evans, Crews and Bailey scored for the Lady Panthers. Jones GC Panther 8 K Road Race The Granville Central Cross-Country team will host the second annual Panther 8 km and 2 Mile road races on Saturday February 23. Both events will begin and end at Granville Central High School located in Stem, NC. Day of race registration and packet pick up begins at 7:30 am in the Granville Central Cafeteria. The 8- km (5-mile) event starts at 9:00 am and the 2 Mile run walk will start at approximately 10:00 am. Early registration is available on line www.sportoften.com. Runners and walkers of ll abilities are encouraged continued to work down low and was rewarded with baskets and free throws. Patrick worked her way open for a bucket in the third quarter. Participants, spectators and volunteers are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items to the event for donation to the ACIM Food Pantry. Granville Central led 47- 36 with eight minutes remaining. The game got a little physical in the final period of play. The drives became more aggressive and the fouls a little harder as players from both teams hit the deck. Evans continued to have her way connecting on a three pointer, a two pointer and two free throws in the final period. Briona Blair moves to attempt the block. Vikings Celebrate Senior Night SG 70 DSA 60 The Vikings bounced the Bulldogs from Durham School of the Arts 70-60 on senior night. Five of the eight seniors scored in double figures in the game. The Vikings seniors came to play was the best way to describe the opening period of the game. Taz Strudwick and Shawn Montren dominated in the paint combining for 10 points. JC Shelley drained a three and converted two free throws in the period for the Vikings. Ansar Muhammad utilized his defense to create a turnover that led to an easy basket. Brandon Ragland aggressively drove the lane repeatedly looking to dish or score. Ragland made DSA either commit to guard him or foul him. Ragland converted all four attempts from the free throw in the first period. South Granville held a 21- 17 lead at the end of the first period. Dylan McFalls and Ryan Boltz worked hard on the defensive end in the second period creating problems for DSA. McFalls and Boltz deflected passes and defended well for the Vikings. The Vikings scoring came from the usual suspects Studwick, Montren Muhammad and Shelley. Strudwick was a terror down low. Montren continued to hit the short jumpers. Muhammad kept creating easy baskets with his defense and Shelley was spot on from three point range. The Vikings led 34-33 at the half. Going into the third period the Vikings knew they had to step up the defensive pressure and limit the Bulldogs touches. McFalls, Boltz, Muhammad and junior Gary Lash did just that in the third quarter. The Vikings denied the Bulldogs the ball for much of the quarter. Muhammad scored six points in the third quarter. Lash, Strudwick, Shelley and Boltz each scored two points and Montren added a free throw. The Vikings led 49-45 with eight minutes remaining. In the fourth quarter the Vikings worked the outside game with Muhammad and Shelley scoring. Ragland continued to drive the lane and dish or get fouled. Boltz and Montren took advantage of inside positioning and scored on the Bulldogs. The Vikings outscored DSA 21-15 in the final period and held on for the 70-60 senior night win. SG 58 DSA 47 The Lady Vikings celebrated senior night with a 58-47 win over the Durham School of the Arts Lady Bulldogs. Seniors Tiana Jones scored 16 and Katelyn Brooks scored eight points in their final regular season home game. The Lady Vikings held a 12-11 lead at the end of the first period. Cameron Patrick scored three points in the first quarter. Deana Allen and Brooks each scored a basket. Hunter Mundy and Jones each connected on two free throws. Nisah Darby added a point from the charity stripe for the Lady Vikings. Both teams scored 12 points in the second quarter. Darby led the way scoring five of her 15 points in the second quarter. Brooks was active on defense and created turnovers that led to fast break points. Brooks scored four points in the quarter. Jones created havoc on the boards grabbing rebound after rebound and limiting the Lady Bulldog attempts in the paint. Mallory Brogden took advantage of a good pass by Brooks to attempt a shot from the right side. Brogden was fouled and converted one of two free throws for the Lady Vikings. South Granville led 24-23 at the half. The Lady Vikings started the third period with swarming defense that baffled the Lady Bulldogs. The third quarter belonged to Jones on the inside for the Lady Vikings. Jones scored eight points in the period on stick backs and free throws. The Lady Vikings outscored DSA 16-12 in the period and held a 40- 35 lead with one quarter remaining. The Lady Vikings rolled off 18 points in the final period. Darby had perhaps her best performance as a Lady Viking in the final eight minutes of the game. Darby connected on two baskets and three free throws for seven points. Jones continued to battle in the paint and came up with a basket and two free throws. Patrick scored four points in the quarter to go along with three by Mundy. The Lady Vikings held on for the 58-47 win.
