In welcoming
remarks, VGCC
President Stelfanie
members of the
graduating class.
After Williams’
remarks, 2013 class
president Patrick Greene
spoke on behalf of his
classmates. He thanked
VGCC administrators
and faculty members, as
well as the students’
families and friends for
their support.
He added that
students had demonstrated
teamwork and
made friendships that
would last a lifetime.
As a parting gift from
the graduates to the
college, the class officers
presented a donation to
the VGCC Endowment
Fund to support
scholarships for future
stu-dents.
VGCC Nursing
department chair Erica
Jastrow presented
academic awards to
graduates who completed
the program with at least
a 3.5 grade point average:
Loyd, Mills, Olchovik,
Reigner, Teilmann,
Wilkerson and Wright.
Instructor Anna
Seaman described the
significance of the
nursing pin. The unique
green and gold pin
identifies each nurse as a
VGCC graduate, and
indicates that the
graduate has the training
and competence to serve
as a professional nurse.
During the ceremony,
graduates were pinned by
their loved ones, with
assistance from
instructors Lori
Thompson and Jean
Hanchey, while instructor
Camella Marcom read
their biographies. After
all graduates had
received pins, the lights in
the Civic Center were
lowered, and instructor
Jenny Holloway led
students in reciting the
“Florence Nightingale
Pledge” by lamp-light.
New Pharmacy Technology Two Year Degree To Be Added
Vance - Granville
ommunity College is
xpanding its Pharmacy
echnology program by
dding a new option for
tudents to earn an
ssociate in Applied
cience degree in the
field, providing graduates
with the skills necessary
to qualify for more
e m p l o y m e n t
opportunities.
The degree program is
set to begin in the Fall
2013 semester, which
starts Aug. 19.
VGCC has offered
Pharmacy Technology
since 2004, but
previously, only a oneyear
(three-semester)
diploma program was
available.. Students who
have already earned a
Pharmacy Technology
diploma at VGCC (or
another North Carolina
community college) can
now resume their
education, complete 30
additional credit hours
(two more semesters), and
graduate with the new
degree.
Previously enrolled
students must re-apply to
VGCC and specify the
Pharmacy Technology
A.A.S. degree as their
intended program of
study.
Carla May, the VGCC
Pharmacy Technology
program head, said that
the additional education
has a specific benefit: the
degree qualifies
graduates to work as
“validating technicians,”
as defined by the North
Carolina Board of
Pharmacy. “A validating
technician has legal
authority to check the
accuracy of work done by
other technicians in
hospitals and other
institutions,” May
explained. “At one time,
this sort of validation
could only be done by a
pharmacist. As our
health-care system
changes and our
population ages, there
will be more and more
demand for pharmacy
technicians who can
perform these duties,
allowing pharmacists
more time to provide
clinical services to
patients.”
The new degree
program will also prepare
Certified Pharmacy
Technicians to assume
pharmacy technician
roles in specialty areas
such as Medication
Therapy Management,
M e d i c a t i o n
Reconciliation, Inventory
Management and
Pharmacy Technician
Administration.
VGCC’s Pharmacy
Technology graduates
have found employment
not only in retail drug
stores but also in
hospitals, infusion
centers, long-term care
facilities, wholesale drug
c o m p a n i e s ,
pharmaceutical
manufacturing facilities
and pharmacy benefit
management call centers.
Diploma graduates are
prepared to take the
National Certification
Examination developed by
the Pharmacy Technician
Certification Board.
SEES N.C.,
NATIONAL
ECONOMY
IMPROVING
Things are looking up economically in both North
Carolina and across the nation.
That is the conclusion of Dr. Mike Walden,
economist and William Neal Reynolds, Distinguished
professor at North Carolina State University. Walden
provides a North Carolina Economic Outlook every
six months, and in his latest outlook, for summer
2013, he sees both the national and state economies
growing and adding jobs over the next two years.
Walden predicts that 2 million new payroll jobs
will be created across the country this year, and 2.5
million added in 2014. That will push the
unemployment rate to 6.8 percent by the end of this
year and to 6.2 percent at the end of 2014.
North Carolina’s economy may actually be
growing a bit faster than the national economy,
Walden says. He expects the state to create 100,000
jobs this year and again in 2014. That should put
the state’s jobless rate at 6.8 percent at the end of
2014.
Walden says a nationwide manufacturing revival
is particularly apparent in North Carolina. The state
is also expected to benefit from what the economist
calls a "construction surge," a large pool of college
graduates available for knowledge-based industries
and retires moving to the state in large numbers.
Most economic indicators are trending upward,
Walden pointed out, while inflation remains low.
Consumer spending tends to drive the American
economy, Walden explains, and the 2007-2009
recession sliced into consumer spending dramatically.
Household asset values decreased by $17 trillion.
Over the last three years, Walden says, household
asset values have rebounded, which is good news for
the economy.
While the North Carolina economic picture is rosy,
it is rosier in some places than others.
The Asheville, Durham-Chapel Hill, Charlotte
and Raleigh-Cary areas have seen the greatest
economic growth and are likely to continue to see
the most growth and lowest unemployment rates over
the next year and a half. Walden expects less growth
and higher jobless rates in the Fayetteville, Hickory
and Rocky Mount areas.
STARTING A BUSINESS? AVOID
THREE COMMON MISTAKES
According to the Small Business Administration,
a third of small businesses fail within the first two
years. Over half fail in the first five years. So if you’re
thinking about starting a small business, it pays to
take an honest look at yourself, your business idea,
and the marketplace. You can increase the odds that
your business will survive by avoiding three very
common mistakes.
Mistake # 1: Not enough cash. If you’re starting
out, it’s a good idea to accumulate – before you enter
the marketplace – a cash reserve that’s about three
times your estimated need. Small businesses often
face down times, when sales aren’t exactly stellar and
revenues slow to a trickle. Also, unforeseen expenses
for insurance, staff, buildings, advertising, taxes (the
list goes on and on) can cripple your business and
shut it down before it’s out of the starting block. Extra
cash can make the difference between a survivor and
a statistic. A reserve fund provides an extra bit of
cushion to keep the business operating as you work
toward the next sales goal.
Mistake # 2: Inadequate planning. Building a
business is like building a house. You need a
foundation, clear goals, and an implementation
strategy. Where do you want to be a year from now
and beyond? If people built houses with as much
foresight as many start-up businesses put into
planning, you’d see a lot more folks camping in their
basements. Developing a sound business plan means
doing solid research. It means understanding the
marketplace, knowing what sets your product apart,
and getting a grip on the costs to implement your
plan. An idea is not a business plan. You need to flesh
out the idea and get down to specifics.
Mistake # 3: Inflexibility. Once you’ve developed
your business plan, be willing to adapt it to changing
conditions. More than a few businesses have started
with a great business model, but failed to modify that
model when market conditions evolved. If your
customers or competitors change (and they will over
time), don’t be afraid to change with them.
If you’re considering starting a small business and
would like assistance, give us a call.
You ask the Senior question ~ We find the Savvy answer
How to Find Lost Life-Insurance Policies
Dear Savvy Senior,
When my father passed away we thought he had
a life insurance policy, but we haven’t been able to
track it down. Do you know of any resources that
might help?
Searching Family
Dear Searching,
Lost or forgotten life-insurance policies are
actually quite common in the U.S. In fact, it’s
estimated that around $1 billion in benefits from
unclaimed life-insurance policies are waiting to be
claimed by their rightful beneficiaries.
While unfortunately, there isn’t a national
database for tracking down these policies, there are a
number of strategies and a few new resources that
can help your search. Here are several to get you
started.
Search records: If your dad died recently, searching
through his financial records is a good first step. Check
his files for a policy, records of premium payments, or
bills from an insurer.. Also contact his employer or
former employer benefits administrator, insurance
agents, financial planner, accountant, attorney or
other adviser and ask if they know about a life
insurance policy. Also check safe-deposit boxes,
monitor the mail for premium invoices or whole-life
dividend notices, and review old income-tax returns,
looking for interest income from, and interest expenses
paid to life-insurance companies.
Contact the insurer: If you suspect that a
particular insurer underwrote the policy, contact that
carrier’s claim office and ask. The more information
you have, like your dad’s date of birth and death, Social
Security number and address, the easier it will be to
track down. Contact information of some big insurers
include: Prudential 800-778-2255; MetLife
metlife.com/policyfinder; AIG 800-888-2452;
Nationwide 800-848-6331; Forethought 800-331-8853;
John Hancock johnhancock.com – click on "Contact
Us" then on "Account Search Request."
Get state help: Some state insurance departments
have a policy locator service program that can help
you locate lost life insurance, or offer resources that
can help you with your search. To reach your state
insurance department, see the National Association
of Insurance Commissioners website at naic.org – click
on "States & Jurisdictions Map."
Search unclaimed property: If your dad died more
than a few years ago, benefits may have already been
turned over to the unclaimed property office of the
state where the policy was purchased. Go to
missingmoney.com, a website of the National
Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators, to
search records from 38 states, Puerto Rico and the
District of Columbia. The pull-down menu under
Links connects you to a map and addresses for
unclaimed-property agencies. Or, to find links to each
state’s unclaimed-property division use
unclaimed.org.
If your dad’s name or a potential benefactor’s name
produces a hit, you’ll need to prove your claim.
Required documentation, which can vary by state, is
detailed in claim forms, and a death certificate might
be necessary. If you need a copy of your dad’s death
certificate, contact the vital records office in the state
where he died, or go to vitalchek.com.
Tap MIB database: The MIB Group Inc., an
insurance membership corporation whose main
purpose is fighting fraud, offers a policy locator service
to help consumers in their searches for life insurance
policies. This service, however, only tracks
applications for individual policies made since 1996.
The service costs $75, requires an original death
certificate to get the ball rolling, and takes about seven
to 10 days to produce a report. To learn more, visit
policylocator.com.
Help Elderly Loved Ones
Avoid Financial Abuse
The United Nations has designated June 15 as
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. If you have older
parents, or even grandparents, can you do anything
to help prevent them from being victimized, especially
with regard to their finances?
Actually, there’s a lot you can do. Here are a few
suggestions:
First, ask your parents or grandparents to not
divulge personal information over the phone. And, of
course, urge them to never wire money to a random
account — no exceptions.
You should also urge your elderly loved ones to
avoid “limited-time” or “no-risk” offers — they’re
almost always misleading at best, and may be
fraudulent at worst.
Finally, encourage your parents or grandparents
to work with a qualified financial professional. If your
parents have such a relationship, they will be less
likely to listen to questionable, unsolicited offers.
You know how much, or how little, help your
elderly loved ones may need in terms of avoiding
financial abuse. So do whatever it takes to help them.

AgCarolina Anounces Refund
AgCarolina Farm
Credit has announced
the issuance of $6.4
million dollars in cash,
to be paid to their
member-borrowers as
part of the agricultural
cooperative’s Patronage
Distribution Program.
“This marks the
25th consecutive year
that AgCarolina has
paid a patronage
refund,” states Dave
Corum, CEO. “The
distribution of profits to
our loyal members
effectively reduces their
cost of borrowing
money,” he adds. “It
only makes sense that
our members share in
the profits of the co-op.”
Since 1988,
AgCarolina Farm
Credit has returned
more than $178 million
to its membercustomers
through
patronage refunds and
retirement of allocated
surplus.
Board Chairman
Stuart Pierce said, “The
patronage refund reflects
the strength and
stability of the
association and proves
the effectiveness of our
co-op business model.”
AgCarolina Farm
Credit is a farmer owned
financial cooperative
with headquarters in
Raleigh. They are the
leading provider of credit
to farmers in central and
eastern North Carolina.
