Cooking Column Crossword Puzzle Years ago I had seen a documentary on educational television nararated by the late Shelby Foote about a unique recreated village in the foothills of the North Carolina mountains. In 1967 Dr. Robert Hart, a Hickory physician, had bought 200 acres of land with the idea of creating a wildlife refuge and a retreat from his busy medical practice. He brought in deer and ducks and other animals. A friend suggested that a log cabin would look neat on the upper pond. Dr. Hart found and moved an old cabin and that began a 42 year historic preservation effort which has become known as Hart’s Square. Over the years, over 70 old original log buildings have been moved to the beautiful secluded farm in the Catawba Valley. Dr. Hart’s project became an obsession to preserve the old crafts, trades and traditions which were a way of life for Western North Carolinians in the 1800’s. One weekend every year over 200 people dress in period attire to demonstrate the trades and life styles for crafts that were common in the early 1800’s. It now includes the largest collection of original historic 109 buildings in the United States. Ever since I had first seen the Channel 4 video I had wanted to go to the once a year event. For a couple of years the problem that kept me away was the fact that the Lord Granville Tractor Club Annual Show was the same weekend, the last weekend in October. This year the tractor club moved their event to the first weekend in October so I was able to attend both events. Doctor Hart saved and reconstructed an old cotton gin, a grist mill complete with a giant wooden water wheel, a operating moonshine still, a church, country store, a molasses mill, a blacksmith shop, wheelwright shop, a beehive pottery kiln, a cabin where rifles were made, a print shop and buildings for many other craftsman who are during the special weekend actively engaged in demonstrating the trades and skills that were a way of life in the 1840’s and for decades thereafter. In addition to finding and relocating all the old buildings a fascinating part of what Dr. Hart did in creating Hart’s Square was recruiting the over 200 skilled interpreters who make the village come alive for the fourth weekend of October. There are weavers, a quilting bee, spinners making yarn, mules turning the molasses mill and the cotton gin, carvers creating decoys, bookbinders making books, a snake oil salesman peddling Indian Love Lotion, a tanner turning buckskin into clothes, broom, shoe and shingle making, flax working, tinsmithing, musicians with fiddles, mandolins and banjos playing and singing old time mountain music and much more. Bebe and I met Brassfield resident Pembo Woodlief for breakfast at the IHOP in Hickory before our journey 12 miles south on Highway 127 to Hart’s Square. Pembo had been there before so he knew the way. I was pleased to actually meet Dr. Hart along the path to one of the buildings. I recognized him from a video I had purchased of the televised program on public T.V. I’m sure he was very busy but he was gracious enough to take a few moments to visit with me. The Catawba County Historical Society now helps coordinate the annual Hart’s Square event. The event is held each year on the fourth Saturday in October. Tickets go on sale ($25. each) on the 1st of October at 9 am and are sold until sold out. The tickets may be purchased on credit card by calling the Catawba County Historical Association at 828-465-0383. Directions are included with tickets which are sent through the mail. BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL Steffy’s idea for a new clothing line got Bill’s attention and the whole company’s support, resulting in Bill naming Steffy the Forrester Creations’ new publicist. Bill and Steffy found they unexpectedly had a lot in common. Although Ridge and Eric boycotted Katie’s first meeting since she was named CEO, Ridge later had a change of heart about working for Bill. Coming: Donna’s work environment may lead to troubles at home. DAYS OF OUR LIVES A furious Will broke up with Mia after she confessed to having slept with several guys at the time she became pregnant. When Chad later gave blood to determine if he’s Sydney’s father, a warning from Lexie made Chad wonder if he can trust the test results. Pushed by Brady’s questioning, Arianna finally ac-knowledged that she’s a drug dealer. Coming: Rafe’s good deeds GENERAL HOSPITAL Carly was prepared to deliver her baby by herself if necessary when Claudia showed up and helped her have baby Josslyn. Michael arrived at the cabin and acted decisively to protect Carly and the newborn when he noted Claudia’s obsession with the baby, leaving Jason to take control of the situation when he and Sam got to the cabin. Coming: Someone up to no good is watching Jason. MELROSE PLACE Riley helped Jonah film a wedding, but things didn’t bode well for their own future when they had a huge fight during the ceremony. Auggie wasn’t happy when Riley ended their friendship in order to salvage her relationship with Jonah. Discovering Lauren’s expensive new clothes as well as an envelope of cash, Ella confronted Lauren about how she’s earning the money. Coming: Unfulfilled desires lead to regrettable actions. ONE LIFE TO LIVE Rex was lured to Michigan, where his Aunt Corinne and Nadine held Brody captive and did the same to Rex, admitting they were forced by an unknown person to keep Rex and Brody away from Jessica and Natalie. Corinne shared information with Rex about his father. After Natalie responded to a message to meet Jared, Jessica came face to face with Jared. Coming: Rex has to deal with a shocking truth. YOUNG AND RESTLESS When Victoria chose to go to New York with J.T. and Reed, Victor announced that he’s leaving Nick in charge of Newman Enterprises. Desperate to keep Adam away from Sharon, Nick sent him on a business trip. Lily and Cane finally made love, but he later feared for her health when she developed a fever. Coming: Nick can’t help but worry about Sharon. Viking Voice By Erin Boltz South Granville needs your help. One of our student’s, Adrian Perry, house burned down the other day and the family needs help. The Sonic in Creedmoor will be holding a benefit night on Thursday October 29. They will donate 10% of all the sales between 5-8. The school will also be holding a fundraiser. On October 30, the school will be holding a spaghetti supper fundraiser from 4:30 to 7. It will be eat in or take out. The plates will be $6 and will contain baked spaghetti, salad, roll, tea, and desserts. Volunteers are needed to make this event possible. For more information, see the people in the business office. The band has started selling fruit. You can order fruit from any band member, middle or high school, between October 22 and November 22. The PTSO will be holding a campus beatification day on Saturday. People are encouraged to come out and make our school look better. Talk to Tammy Tuck for more information. Apply online through CFNC and save money. Viking football is still in action. The Vikings will play for the conference title this Friday, October 30th. This is also Senior Night. They will be away at Granville Central on the 6. The JV football team will play away this week. They will host Granville Central in their last game of the season on November 5. The volleyball teams are in the state playoffs, so look out for those dates and times. The schedules are now up for basketball and wrestling. Check them out and come out and support your Viking athletic teams. Lessons will be $5 and held from 6-7:30 pm. Other types of dance lessons will also be available SEARCH CONTINUES Another Hunting Season has started since Kelly Currin Morris has been missing and Kelly’s parents have asked that the hunters and hikers be on heighten alert for anything out of place or ordinary including clothing, while they are in the woods, fields and on the trails. They thank volunteers for their past and continued support in the search for Kelly. Authorities are continuing to follow up on all tips and leads received from the public and their is still a $36,000 outstanding reward for information leading to the where abouts of Kelly. Kelly Currin Morris, age Happy 21 st Birthday! October 30th 28, was last seen on Sept. 3, 2008. Her house burned down Sept. 4, 2008 as a result of arson. LINE DANCE CLASSES The Oxford Parks & Recreation is offering line dance classes for anyone interested, beginning Nov. 8th.
