South Granville Wins Opening Round Playoffs
South Granville Lady
Vikings dominated the
opening round of the
Volleyball State Playoffs
against North Johnston
with a three set win. (25-12,
26-24 and 25-16)
South Granville jumped
out to a 20-4 lead in the
opening set before the North
Johnston Panthers knew
what had hit them. Superior
serving and aggressive net
play gave the Lady Vikings
a 25-12 opening set win.
North Johnston began
the second set aggressively
taking an eight -five lead,
but the Lady Vikings did not
quit. South Granville tied
the set at 20 all before the
Lady Panthers could
respond. North Johnston
tied the score at 24-24.
Briana Taborn served the
final two points for the
second set win at 26-24.
The Lady Vikings used
all around solid play from
the entire team to begin the
set with an eight –two lead.
South Granville powered the
ball over the net time and
time again in the final set to
finish with a 25-16 win.
Coach
Gina
Cunningham stated, “The
game against NJHS was a
good win. Stephanie
Bauchkey served 17 straight
points in the first game to
secure that win and her and
Ellen Bizzell continued to
serve strong throughout the
match. We won because
defense was strong and we
played smart. We had a few
good hits from all positions
but nothing like what we
had been having. You know
it is an off night offensively
when your libero has as
many hits as your hitters do.
We will definitely have to
play with more offensive
strength to get past
Providence Grove. I believe
if we play as one and all the
players play to their ability
we will be hard for anyone
to defeat. They are a great
team when they play
together and everyone does
their job.”
South Granville’s Seniors
celebrated at 6-1 victory over
the Granville Central
Panthers.
The Vikings built a 4-1
lead at by the half and never
looked back in the match
against Granville Central.
Ajene Spence scored the first
goal on a corner kick for the
Vikings with 33:48 remaining
in the first half. Marcus
Lindsay was credited with the
assist on the goal.
Will Eddins answered for
the Panthers with 31:00 left
in the opening half. The score
was tied at one all.
Ajene Spence scored his
second goal of the match with
9:58 remaining in the first
half. Spence again scored
with 6:49 left in the first half.
With less than two minutes
remaining in the quarter
Spence fired the ball in the
goal to end the first half.
Sam Paff opened the
second half scoring for the
Vikings with 33:26 left in the
match. Paff scored on a
penalty kick to give the
Vikings a 5-1 lead.
Jonathan Ransdale
finished the Vikings scoring
with 18:30 in the match.
South Granville took 17
Granville Central took 14
shots on goal and finished
with 7 saves.
Coach Marc Phillips
commented, “It was a great
night to honor our senior
players, Sam Paff, Juan
Lopez, and Trey Johnson. I
am glad to have had the
Ellen Bizzell #8 hits the ball up and over against North Johnson.
Game 1
Freshmen vs.
Sophomores
23 38
Sophomores led by Joey
Hunike, Tevin Hester &
Troy Gerardi steam rolled
the freshmen team led by
Brandon Ragland, Josh
Coachman & Jonathan
Price.
Game 2
Juniors vs. Seniors
41 26
Juniors with a brilliant
2 nd half pulled away (tiegame
at the half) from a
turn-over laden senior
squad who could not buy a
basket in the 2 nd half of
action. Juniors were led by
Mike Blackburn, Devon
Oakley but the “Star” of the
game was Kelva Atkins
leading the juniors in
scoring. The seniors were
led by Tevin Wortham,
Travis Copeland & Lewis
Bobbit.
Game 3
“Student Championship”
Sophomores vs. Juniors
33 38
This was the match up
that everyone thought it
would be, juniors vs.
sophomores, with many at
school thinking that the
sophomores would be
victorious. The juniors had
other plans & the game lived
up to all the hype, it was a
great battle to watch.
Sophomores had a 3 point
lead going into the half
keyed by great passing and
a hustling defensive effort,
but behind Devon Oakley &
DJ Chavis relentless effort
the juniors took a 1 point
lead late, juniors 32 –
sophomores 31. But little
did anyone know that the
juniors had a secret “3 point”
threat; that threat came in
the form of Andrew
Edwards, Edwards who was
yet to score in either game
knocks down back to back 3
pointers from the left wing
over the out stretched arm
of sophomore Troy Gerardi.
Those back to back 3’s sealed
the win for the juniors.
Game 4
Student vs. Coaches
40 42
For the second year in a row
the coaches were victorious
42-40, & the game was a
laugher early with the
coaches taking an early big
lead, (coaches 21 – students
6). With that 15 point lead
the coaches were having a
good time show boating;
laughing on and off the
court. The juniors fought
back to make the game close
late & eventually tied the
game 40-40. After the game
is tied by a DJ Chavis layup,
Coach McDaniel yells
“time out”. With an
intentional foul by junior
Melvin Shaw, Coach Allen
Foster makes 1 of 2, but
coaches retain possession
due to intentional foul and
Coach Michael Boyd was
fouled and made 1 of 2 FT’s.
The juniors have 4.2 seconds
to score but DJ Chavis’ last
second 3 pt shot hits the rim
but does not go in. Juniors
were led by Devon Oakley,
DJ Chavis and coached by
Mike Blackburn and
Charles Jefferson. The
coaches were led by Derek
Tarrant, Allen Foster & the
“MVP” for the coaches was
Reggie Brooks.
Will Eddins #3 for Granville Central battles Roderick Hasty #12 for the
Vikings for possession of the loose ball.
Trey Johnson #13 for South Granville is shocked as he moves toward
the ball and Ubaldo Ceja #9 for Granville Central concentrates on
how to get around Johnson.
