Want to save time and
omeowner, consider
mprovement projects
hat can reduce the need
or ongoing home
aintenance. you’ll find
he upfront cost and
nergy well worth it down
he line.
It could be as simple
s replacing older
aterials with newer
roducts that are longerasting
and less
usceptible to wear and
ear, say experts.
Not sure where to
tart? Beginning with the
xterior of your home will
ive you the added benefit
f boosting your house’s
urb appeal. Clement
andy checklist:
The Roof: Look for
roblem areas, such as
issing or broken
hingles, along with
roofing tiles that are
“flapping” in the wind.
These indicate that a new
roof may be in your future.
Newer products on the
market, such as polymer
shake and slate roofing
tiles, are impact-resistant,
and some tiles are fireand
impact-resistant.
Along with helping
protect against potential
wildfires and severe
weather, these roofs often
come with a homeowner
insurance discount. They
also have a 50-year
limited warranty.
Windows: If you find
the windows in your home
don’t operate easily,
there’s air leaking in or
out of the units or
condensation builds up
between the glass panes,
it may be time to replace
them. Consider vinyl
framed windows, which
are energy-efficient,
Features: Check
shutters, trim and
louvers. Look for water
spots, decay or peeling
paint to see if they’re
deteriorating, suffering
from insect infestations
or warping. When it’s
time to replace these
items, select lowmaintenance
urethane or
PVC products. The
lightweight pieces are
easy to install, add curb
appeal and resist
moisture.
Main Entry Door:
Can you see light around
your door from the
inside? Is the door hard
to close or lock? Is the
door itself warped? These
are signs it’s time to
replace your entry door.
And even if you can’t see
light, air may be moving
through gaps in the
weather stripping at a
surprising rate.
Consider replacing an
entryway with a highperformance
fiberglass
door. Fiberglass doors can
have up to four times
more insulating value
than wood doors. And,
selecting a door with all
its components made by
the same manufacturer
— such as weatherstripping,
How To Treat Peach Tree Borers
BY CARL CANTALUPPI
CENTER
Peachtree borers are
caterpillars of a
clearwinged moth. The
moths resemble wasps,
but of course the moths do
not sting. These moths
emerge throughout the
growing season, but the
vast majority of them are
in flight between August
15 and September 15.
Consequently, most of
the borers can be
managed preventively by
treating
with
esfenvalerate,
permethrin, cyfluthrin or
other pyrethroid
insecticide around August
15 and again around
September 1. Mix the
insecticide in a bucket of
water and pour the
mixture on the tree trunk,
3 feet above the ground,
and let it soak into the
ground at the base of the
trunk. It is not necessary
to treat higher into the
tree since the moths lay
eggs at the base of
peaches, plums, cherry
laurels, and ornamental
cherries. From these eggs
hatch tiny, white
caterpillars that bore into
the bark and tunnel in the
cambium at the base of
the tree.
If you do not drench
the tree, the borers will go
into the tree and kill it,
due to the plugging of the
tree's vascular system.
Many times, you will not
notice that the tree is
dying before it's too late
to do anything during the
following spring. The
leaves can wilt and
after the fruit has set. So
take notice and treat
early September so that
If many borers infest
a tree, the cambium may
be completely girdled
beneath the bark and the
tree will die. The borers
pupate inside the infested
tree during late spring
and summer and then
emerge as moths a few
weeks later. Look for
gummy plugs containing
frass (insect excrement)
or partially projecting
It is important to treat
to prevent further borers
from invading the tree.
otherwise is to try to
gouge the borer out from
under the bark without
collapse suddenly, right
during mid August to
you won't become
disappointed next year.
pupal skins.
The only control
injuring the tree
excessively.
