Further, 9 participants that did not weight-out in March returned to the October Weigh-Out and qualified for the drawing ñ proving the value of sticking to a goal, regardless of how long it takes to reach it. Even those that missed their mark should be proud, for their participation indicates that they are focused on achieving a healthy weight through improved behaviors and no change occurs without that important step. Winners of the Maintenance Challenge drawing were: Tonya Martin, Karen and Gary Honeycutt from Granville County, and Peter Beguhl, Ray Rainey, Ron Dorsey, Lucy Stewart, Emilee Johnson, and Erica Seaman, from Vance County. Sponsors of the Challenge (Granville-Vance District Health Department, Granville Health System, Maria Parham Medical Center, and the Henderson Family YMCA) salute them and all the participants for their efforts to achieve a healthy weight. Sponsors also encourage county residents and workers to stay on track with their goals by joining the Eat Smart Move More NC Maintain, Don’t Gain! Holiday Challenge which runs from November 22nd through December 31st. The goal of this challenge is to help participants avoid gaining extra weight during the festive holiday season. Register at www.MyEatSmartMoveMore.com" to get tips and support. We encourage Granville and Vance County residents to use the Holiday Challenge as a springboard to meeting New Year’s Weight Resolutions with the 3rd Annual Granville-Vance Eat Smart Move More Weight Loss Challenge in January 2011. Start thinking about possible team mates and strategy now! HIV Testing North Carolina health leaders say new research into medications that might prevent the spread of HIV with a daily pill could herald a new era in preventing HIV infections, but regular testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) remains the best and most effective way to stop the spread in our state. In 2009, a total of 1,710 new HIV cases were reported in North Carolina. Preliminary estimates indicate at least the same number of new cases is expected for 2010. In North Carolina, one in 268 people is infected with HIV disease. This number includes those who may not be aware that they are infected. “The research into HIV prevention is groundbreaking,” State Health Director Jeff Engel said. “The medication was tested in specific high-risk populations and it is effective when used along with regular testing, the use of condoms and other prevention methods. Until more studies are done, we encourage anyone who is sexually active to learn their HIV and STD status so they can take steps to protect their own health and the health of their partner.” New data from 2010 also shows that syphilis numbers are on the decline. Statewide, a total of 561 cases of early (infectious) syphilis were reported in the state for the first nine months of 2010, slightly lower than the same time last year. However, several counties continue to see high numbers of new cases. In Cumberland, Pitt and Robeson counties, the number of syphilis cases from January 2010 through September 2010 was at least double the number in the same time period in 2009. From January to September 2010, over 45,000 cases of gonorrhea and chlamydia were reported statewide. “Testing for HIV and sexually transmitted diseases is available across the state at local health departments and other health centers,” North Carolina AIDS Director Jacquelyn Clymore said. “Responding to possible symptoms and going to the doctor earlier, rather than later, ensures that patients will get the treatment and advice they need.” During 2010, Gov. Bev Perdue and the N.C. General Assembly provided $14 million in the state budget to provide access to lifesaving medications for HIV patients through the state’s AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP). IRS Seeks To Return Money The Internal Revenue Service is looking to return about $11,675 in undelivered refund checks to taxpayers in the Granville County. The checks average $1,061. “We want to make sure taxpayers get the money owed to them,” said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman. “If you think you are missing a refund, the sooner you update your address information, the quicker you can get your money.” “More than 4,400 Carolina taxpayers are due one or more refund checks that could not be delivered because of mailing address errors,” said Mark Hanson, IRS spokesperson for North Carolina and South Carolina. A taxpayer only needs to update his or her address once for the IRS to send out all checks due. Nationwide, undelivered refund checks average $1,471 this year, compared to $1,148 last year. Some taxpayers are due more than one check. The average dollar amount for returned refunds rose by almost 28 percent this year, possibly due to recent changes in tax law which introduced new credits or expanded existing credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit. If a refund check is returned to the IRS as undelivered, taxpayers can generally update their addresses with the “Where’s My Refund? http://www.irs.gov/ individuals/article/ 0,,id=96596,00.html” tool on IRS.gov. The tool also enables taxpayers to check the status of their refunds. A taxpayer must submit his or her Social Security number, filing status and amount of refund shown on their 2009 return. The tool will provide the status of their refund and, in some cases, instructions on how to resolve delivery problems. Taxpayers checking on a refund over the phone will receive instructions on how to update their addresses. Taxpayers can access a telephone version of “Where’s My Refund?” by calling 1-800- 829-1954. Taxpayers owed money from Granville County were listed in an IRS press release. From Creedmoor, they were: Jose Martin, Darlene Beck, Lauren D. Breedlove, Issam M Doghman and Fawda H. Doughman, and Daniel Slankard. From Stem: Patsy R. Carter and Victoria Duke; and from Oxford: Robert L. Harris, Scott T. Irby, Carnell F. Marable and Michelle Williams. N ATHAN M.
