OAK VIEW HOLIDAY EVENT The annual winter event will be held at Historic Oak View Farm, located near Walnut Creek just off Interstate 40. Decorations and displays showing "Christmas at the Oak View Farm: How they celebrated from 1850 to 1950, will be on view in the main house. Rides in a horse drawn carriage through Oak View's Pecan Grove and holiday music and stories will be featured. Hot apple cider will be offered and a dulcimer player will play in and around the 1825 Plank Kitchen. This event is always free and open to the public. Donations of new clothing, toiletries or canned goods may be placed under the Warming Tree and are given to the InterAct Shelter in Raleigh. For additional information call 919-212- 7695. Mayor Pro Tem Howard Herring, Sr., Pam Thornton, Museum Director, and Sheriff Brin Wilkins, Jr. drew the two lucky children’s names to ride with Santa in the Oxford Christmas Parade. The Museum sold raffle tickets for this event. CONSERVATION CAMPAIGN Tar River Land Conservation has launched a year-end campaign to raise $50,000 for the stewardship of its protected lands. Now located in Louisburg, the local land trust has protected and annually monitors thousands of acres of land it owns or has placed under permanent conservation easements north and east of the Triangle. "While good for farms, forests, water and wildlife, guardianship of these resources is costly it requires a significant and ongoing financial investment "says Ernie Averett, President of the Conservancy. COMPUTER CLASSES Vance - Granville Community College has scheduled several of its popular computer-related classes starting in January on the college’s South Campus, located on N.C. 56 between Creedmoor and Butner. The “Beginner's Guide to Computers & the Internet” course will be offered twice at the South Campus. One class, with instructor John Clark, runs on Mondays from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., January 24 through February 28, 2011, while the other is held on Wednesday evenings from 6 until 10 p.m., January 12 through February 15. An evening course will introduce students to QuickBooks, a powerful accounting system for small businesses. In this course, students will be given an opportunity for hands-on practice. David Richardson will teach the course Thursday nights from 6 until 10 p.m., January 13 through February 17. The Microsoft PowerPoint presentation software will be the subject of a course taught on Fridays from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., January 14 through January 28. Another class will focus on Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel, two of the most popular New Arrival LEAH SLOAN GORDON Mr. and Mrs. Jason Gordon announce the birth of their daughter, Leah Sloan Gordon born the 2nd day of November, 2010, weighing 8 lbs. and 3 ozs. at Durham Regional Hospital. The mother is the former Nicole McGee daughter of Christine Brown of Creedmoor and Alan and Melba McGee of Raleigh. Paternal Grandparents are Sidney and Donna Gordon of Creedmoor. and widely used components of the Microsoft Office suite, which were extensively revamped for the 2007 versions. The course is offered twice, both on Wednesdays, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., January 26 through March 2 (with instructor John Clark), and the second from 6 until 10 p.m., February 23 through April 4. Clark will also teach a more advanced course on the spreadsheet program, Excel Level II, on Tuesdays from 6 until 9 p.m., March 15 through April 19. For each course, the cost is a $65 registration fee, plus other applicable fees. All classes are held in room 130 on South Campus. JOHN MELLENCAMP John Mellencamp will be performing his No Better Than This Tour on Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at 7:30 pm at the Durham Performing Arts Center in Durham. “Walk-N-Shop For A Cure” Here’s a great chance to get some exercise and make a difference in the lives of many. The third annual ”Walk-N-Shop For a Cure” will be held Saturday morning, December 11th, at 10:00 a.m. The walk will begin and end in the parking lot on Littlejohn Street. There will be a 5K route (3.2 miles) and a short 1 mile stroll for those who aren’t up for the full distance. Participants may register at the Oxford Parks & Recreation Department M-F 8:00 to 5:00 prior to the event or on the day of the event beginning at 9:00 a.m. up to the starting time. The registration fee is $10.00. Breast Cancer survivors are invited as the Department’s guest at no fee in recognition of their courage and determination to fight. All proceeds for this event go directly to Susan G. Komen Cancer Research. The holiday “Walk-N-Shop for a Cure” gives the public the opportunity to enjoy a nice stroll through downtown Oxford, down College Street, and the Masonic Home. This is not a race, but rather an opportunity to increase breast cancer awareness, encourage women and men to do routine checks, and raise funds for most needed research. Walkers will honor those who have fought the battle and lost, are fighting the battle, or have battled and won! After walking and doing a little window shopping, merchants invite walkers to return and shop and enjoy the day in beautiful downtown Oxford and take advantage of some great bargains. Breast cancer affects more women than any other type of cancer. Research has taught us that early detection is often the key to survival. Research has also allowed doctors to eliminate cancer in many women. Further research is needed to enable doctors to eradicate this terrible disease. Many local women have fought and lost the battle. Others have courageously fought and won because of the determination of those who do the research. Others are in the battle now. While the good news is that fewer women are dying today, there is much work yet to be done. The first annual walk was in honor of Cynthia Twisdale, a local teacher, mother, and friend who had lost her battle with breast cancer. This years event honors those ladies who are fighting the fight or have fought and won. Events such as this have made the research possible for these ladies to survive and are creating a way to end this tragic disease. Don’t think your donation is too small. Every dollar helps in the efforts to find a cure. Come out for this worthwhile event, shop in downtown Oxford, enjoy a leisurely walk, and help find a cure for Breast Cancer on Saturday, December 11th.

Wilkins, Jr., of Granville County. But what shoppers are neglecting is their safety. According to Sheriff Brindell B. Wilkins, Jr., "This time of year attracts more shoppingrelated criminal activity because of the larger crowds and the extended store hours. These factors and the usual distraction of shopping, creates a more favorable environment for petty thieves and other offenders. The Sheriff reminds all Granville County residents to follow these safety tips: Shopping Safety: A single shopper is the best target for theft. Always shop with a friend or relative. When going shopping, tell omeone where you are going nd what time to expect you to eturn. Also, make sure they now what you are wearing, as ell as the type of vehicle you re driving. Shop during daylight hours. f you shop at night, park your ehicle in a well-lit area. Dress casually and comfortably and avoid wearing expensive jewelry. If carrying cash, keep it in your front pocket rather than in a purse or wallet. This makes it much more difficult for a pickpocket to remove. Also store car keys in a pants or jacket pocket. If your purse is stolen, you will still be able to drive home. Pay careful attention to your surroundings and avoid overloading yourself with packages. It is important to have clear visibility and freedom of motion to avoid mishaps. When returning to your vehicle, check around it and in the back seat. Be aware of strangers approaching you for any reason. Have your car keys in your hand to avoid spending unnecessary time unprotected from the security of your vehicle. If you feel uneasy returning to your vehicle alone, find a security guard and ask them to walk you to your car. According to Sheriff Brindell B. Wilkins, Jr., "During this time of year, busy holiday shoppers become careless and vulnerable to other crimes as well. Credit card fraud and gift card fraud are on the rise. However, taking a few preventive measures can help." Credit Card Fraud: Keep a close watch on your credit card every time you use it, and make sure you get it back as quickly as possible Never write your PIN number on your credit card. Never leave your credit cards or receipts lying around. Shield your credit card number so that others around you can't copy it or capture it on a mobile telephone or other camera. Only carry credit cards that you absolutely need. Shred anything with your credit card number written on it. If you're planning to purchase on-line, make sure the web page where you enter your credit card information is secure through SSL (Secure Socket Layer). You can tell if the web page is secure by looking for the gold lock or key icon at the bottom corner of your browser window. If you're not comfortable submitting your information through the internet, call the seller and give them your information over the telephone. Never send your credit card information via email. Check the company out. Only do business with companies that provide a physical address and telephone number. Keep good records. Always print out a copy of any online products or services you purchase. Gift Card Fraud: Never buy gift cards from online auction sites. This is a large source of gift card fraud. Many of the gift cards are stolen, counterfeit or used. Only buy gift cards directly from the store issuing the gift card or from a secure retailer's website. Don't buy gift cards off of publicly displayed racks in retail stores. Only purchase gift cards at the sales terminal from the cashier. Always carefully examine both the front and back of a gift card before you buy it. If you see a PIN number, ask for a different card. If the card looks like it has been tampered with in any way, put it back. Always ask the store cashier to scan the gift card in front of you. This will guarantee that your card is valid when you buy it and that it reflects the balance you just charged it with. Always keep your receipt as a proof of purchase as long as there is money stored on the gift card. If possible, register your gift card at the store's website. Never give your Social Security number, date of birth or any other unneeded private information when purchasing a gift card. No reputable company will ask for this information. In light of these problems, Sheriff Brindell B. Wilkins, Jr., warns shoppers to be careful so that they don't become the victim of criminal activity. "Unfortunately, when shopping, people have a tendency to let their guard down," said Sheriff Brindell B.
