Maddie speaks and acts more like an adult than a kid. That’s not to say that Maddie (who will soon be ten) doesn’t get along well with young people her own age. She’s got lots of young friends and Maddie still enjoys scootering on Main Street and riding her bike or taking part as a cheerleader or hanging out at Nona’s Bakery helping bake cookies along with other kids her own age or taking care of her dogs at home. Maddie can’t do any of those things right now because she’s a patient at Duke Children’s Hospital. She first knew she had a problem when she choked real bad at Creedmoor Elementary. She kept having breathing problems so her mother, Meredith Gilmore-Reyes (who runs The Beehive hair salon on Main Street) took her to the doctor. It was discovered that Maddie had a collasped lung so she went to The Duke Children’s Hospital where they discovered a tumor called a teratoma. It was located between her lung and her heart and it was pressuring her airway, heart and lungs. Maddie needed an operation but the procedure was risky and it had a fatal risk because of the location of the tumor. Fortunately Maddie is a very active girl in good physical condition from her activities as a cheerleader and in gymnastic classes and girl scout activities. Madeline’s (Maddie’s) mother described her doctors at Duke as “The Dream Team.” She had her surgery Monday and everything seemed to go very well. She was in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit less than 24 hours and her progress was astounding to the attending doctors, residents and nurses. It had originally been predicted that she would be in PICU for a week and a step down room for two weeks before getting her own room at the hospital. Her mother said she is already up sitting in a chair and eating. Maddie’s mom Meredith said the tumor was 4” by 5 1/ 2” x over 6 inches. All this in a little girl that “weighs 49 lbs. soaking wet.” Already there has been an outpouring of public support from the Butner-Creedmoor community. Meredith said, “I am so lucky to have a special child like this. We are blessed to live in a community where she and I have obviously touched so many. God bless Maddie poses as a SGAA Viking Cheerleader. you all and thank you to a town where special people live. You have touched my heart. My undying gratitude goes out to you all. God has answered a mothers prayers, answered a community’s prayer, and prayers across the country and the world.” “I only hope I can give back the outpouring of love and support. Bless Creedmoor United Methodist Church and my friend and instigator of good things, Nona, I love you all, Maddie loves you all! Watch for Maddie’s hair flapping in the wind while scootering on Main Street. Love and Gracious thanks to all.” Nona, from Nona’s Bakery began a lot of the help that has been given to help Maddie so far since Maddie doesn’t have any medical insurance. Donations can be made at Nona’s Bakery or by calling 529-1300. A special fund raiser entitled, Break Bread For Maddie, is planned for December 12 from noon until 6 pm at Jon and Jill’s Main Street Restaurant. The meal will consist of fried or barbecue chicken for $8.00 per person. The meal will be eat in or call for take out orders to 528-7777. The doctors gave the news that they were able to remove the entire tumor with no real problem. They are still waiting to find out labs/pathology from biopsy. They did go on with removal because of it not being attached to vital organs. “She will have a long recovery and will need visitors at a later time,” her mother said. “I look at Madeline’s choking incident as a blessing in disguise. Since her tumor is so rare and so big without choking we may not have found the tumor. I know that I can never know how to repay or say thank you to my church family and what looks like the entire community of Creedmoor for their support.” Meredith said she also wanted to thank her mother Dee without whose help she wouldn’t be who she is. “I have always thought “My Monkey” was special. I just didn’t realize the profound ways she has touched the individual lives of so many until now. Watch for her return and riding her scooter on Main St.” Maddie’s friends had an entry in the Christmas parade wishing for her recovery. to wait regarding the future of her pregnancy, but when Madison learned that she’s three months along, she realized she’s running out of time. After making her decision, Madison opted not to tell Ryan that she’s pregnant. Jackson overheard Erica say that she wished Greenlee never came back to Pine Valley. Although Jackson and Erica agreed to get married on New Year’s Eve, the tension between them was obvious. Coming: Annie wants more than what JR seems willing to give. BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL Whip arranged for a prank at the Taboo fashion show that he hoped would cause a rift in Ridge’s marriage as payback for what Ridge did to his and Taylor’s. The resulting photo wound up on the Internet, infuriating Ridge, as Brooke and Thomas tried to calm him down, and Taylor fumed when Whip made sure she saw the picture. As Brooke offered to remove herself from Taboo to keep the peace, Whip plotted his next move against Ridge. Coming: Amber has visions of sharing in the Spencers’ lavish lifestyle. DAYS OF OUR LIVES Gabi and Will saw something odd in recent photos of Johnny and brought them to Rafe. Lexie became alarmed while examining Johnny and told EJ the child needs to be seen by a specialist. After irrationally blaming Sami for causing Johnny’s illness, EJ ordered Sami to leave the hospital, when Dr. Kim arrived with bad news. Daniel was stunned to overhear Stephanie tell Caroline that Philip cheated on Melanie. Coming: Melanie and Nathan deal with lingering feelings for each other. DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES The Dec. 19th episode of “Desperate Housewives” week, “The Santa Clause 3.” GENERAL HOSPITAL Sonny and Brenda made a commitment to each other and gave in to their passion. Just as Jason and Dante planned, Jerry showed up, but he escaped after killing an innocent civilian and fled with Aleksander’s body. Jerry soon intruded into Jax’s home, menacing Carly at gunpoint and vowing not to stop until he gets Brenda. Grilled by Carly, Brenda finally admitted the truth about the Balkan’s son, while Jax armed himself, ready to take down Jerry. Coming: Luke is under pressure to show up for his wedding. GOSSIP GIRL “Gossip Girl” is part of the CW lineup pre-empted by a full week’s re-broadcast of the first 10 episodes of season two of “The Vampire Diaries.” ONE LIFE TO LIVE Brody and Nate broke up the fight between Eddie and Ford. As James pointed his gun at Eddie, chaos ensued and Eddie was killed, with James, Nate, Ford and Inez all suspects. Todd claimed innocence when a cufflink with his initials was found in Eddie’s room, while Tea agreed to represent James, who insisted he had changed his mind about shooting Eddie. Coming: Unaware of the truth, Matthew is filled with rage. YOUNG AND RESTLESS While Kevin poured out his heart to Chloe, Jana schemed to obtain Daisy’s baby in order to get Kevin back. Chloe’s strong reaction to seeing Heather and Ronan kiss made it clear that she doesn’t have the same feelings for Kevin. Kevin turned to Jana and had sex with her, which Chloe witnessed and decided to move out, much to Jana’s delight. Coming: Nick’s behavior causes a huge rift between him and Victoria. T HE S UPERINTENDENT C OLUMN By Dr. Timothy Farley Beyond The 3 R’s As promised I write today about why GCS will not feel the full impact of projected cuts to the 2011-2012 state budget. I want to state candidly that we will feel some of the cuts…notably at the administrative level. The projections I have seen point to an 8% reduction in money allocated for administrative costs. I am reticent to cut school administration because teachers need all the support they can get (particularly, in discipline). Thus, I am left to cut Central Services. Lest you celebrate too much, any cut at Central Services will be felt in the level of support we can provide. The public has no idea of the support we provide, but in a year that could lead to cuts to teachers, I have to cut CS back first. Interesting times create interesting circumstances and I must protect teachers at all costs. Why are we not going to feel the full measure of the cuts? We have planned well. I consistently trumpet the skills of our Board, Beth Day and Allan Jordan. They have stewarded us to a position of sound fiscal status through a conservative, visionary approach to budgeting. We had our financial audit review this morning and were told that we are in excellent shape and unusually positioned to deal with the impending crisis. We saw two years ago that this was coming. We endured a set of painful cuts that cost us many jobs and many good people. We also coupled that with programs designed to save money…lots of money. Our energy program and our operational redesign have saved well over $ 1 million dollars. We have not spent all our stimulus money this past year choosing to save for a “rainy day.” It will not just rain, it will pour. In fact, we judiciously used the ARRA money given us over the past two years. Moreover, with the help of our county commissioners, we have partnered with the county in areas such as recycling, automotive maintenance, and technology to save all taxpayers money. While we cannot be entirely certain that we will escape all the potential damage from the looming budget, I can guarantee that we will not be crippled by it. They will be taking donations starting November 15th until December 9th. CHURCH EVENTS The First Baptist Church of Creedmoor will be presenting a schedule of programs during the Christmas holidays with the title "Come Home For Christmas". The events will include a a children's musical December 12th at 7 pm and a Christmas Eve Service December 24th at 11 pm. BUSINESS NETWORK MEETING The Vance-Granville Business Network meets on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 7:30 – 8:30 am.
