Cold and flu season is setting in and the close quarters of the workplace allow coworkers to easily trade germs. Better Business Bureau serving Eastern North Carolina recommends that business owners take a few simple steps to prevent illnesses from spreading throughout the workplace. According to the National Institutes of Health, there are more than one billion cases of the common cold in the United States every year. The flu also affects up to 20 percent of Americans every year with the peak season starting in late November, according to the Center for Disease Control. The most recent influenza activity report from the CDC states that North Carolina, along with the majority of the east coast, currently has sporadic influenza activity. It is important to keep your employees safe, as well as maintain productivity in the office throughout the cold and flu seasons, said Beverly Baskin, President and CEO of BBB serving Eastern North Carolina. Encouraging proper hygiene and a liberal leave policy will help maintain a happier, healthier workplace. The following steps to protect employees during cold Four Easy Ways to Lighten Up Your Holiday Cooking Holiday foods have a reputation for being bellybusting yet irresistibly tasty. Fortunately, the Eat Smart, Move More - Maintain, Don’t Gain! Holiday Challenge has a few pointers to save your waistline. With a few easy tricks you can lighten up your holiday cooking. Better yet, your family and guests will never know that the dishes you’ve prepared have a healthier twist! Cut calories by using cooking spray or healthy oils when cooking and sautéing. Healthy oils — such as olive or canola — are better for you than butter and other oils. Keep in mind these still pack the same punch in terms of fat as other oils, so always use them lightly. Replacing oils with cooking spray is another great way to loose some calories when grilling, sautéing and baking. Bake, grill, sauté or broil instead of frying. These methods use less fat than frying and will save your waistline from extra holiday pounds. Dress your meals up and flu season: Build up an arsenal to fight germs. Tissues, hand sanitizer and cleaning products are three basic purchases employers can make for fighting germs around the office. Encourage employees to stay home. Sick employees may think they’re being dedicated workers when they still come into work. The truth is, they spread germs to other employees and cut down on the overall productivity of the business. Encourage sick employees to stay home for at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever or severe symptoms. Consider instituting a flexible leave policy that allows employees to work from home if they or their kids are sick. Promote good hygiene. Remind everyone of the importance of hand washing and covering your mouth if you sneeze or cough. Encourage employees to regularly clean shared equipment, such as phones and computers, and wipe down common areas. Encourage flu shots. The CDC recommends that everyone six months and older get vaccinated each with light sauces or marinades to give your food extra flavor without the fat. Pick a lighter protein. Fill up on beans instead of meat. Black beans, kidney beans, chickpeas and others are packed with protein but low in fat and calories. What’s more, they’re fiber powerhouses that will keep you fuller longer. Use meat as a condiment or go meatless and let veggies be the star of your plate! Make simple swaps. Does your recipe call for whole milk? Simply substitute low fat milk instead. Does the pumpkin bread you’re baking call for a quarter-cup of oil? Use half the amount of oil and swap in applesauce for the rest. Many baked goods can still be tasty with the sugar partly reduced. Experiment! A few easy substitutions can make a big difference to your waistline. For more information or to join the Eat Smart, Move More - Maintain, Don’t Gain!
