RACING EXPO The 25th Annual Piedmont Racing Expo will add a new dimension to the format for its Silver Anniversary edition, January 14-15 at the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh , NC . Promoter Phillip Walker, a veteran racer himself, is seeking drivers who raced at the “Raleigh Fairgrounds Speedway” which was open from 1955-1970. Walker also wants to get copies of any race memorabilia, photos, or programs from the famed speedway. NC Governor Bev Perdue and NASCAR Hall of Fame member Junior Johnson unveiled a commemorative DOT Marker Sign during the State Fair in October, recognizing the 1⁄2 mile dirt oval that was located on the fairgrounds property. Walker stated that he spoke with Junior Johnson at the season ending race at Myrtle Beach Speedway last Sunday, with Johnson proudly stating that he won the first NASCAR race at the fairgrounds track. Other notable winners were David Pearson in 1969 and Richard Petty in 1970. The track also ran weekly races with Haskell Willingham driving for Preacher Cox being one of the most successful weekly drivers. The track’s footprint still exists, but has been transformed for parking and an area for the “Midway” during the State Fair. In addition to the Piedmont Racing Expo shorttrack trade show and auction, Walker will sponsor a Racer’s Reunion for drivers that competed at the track. Drivers who are able to take part in the program and autograph sessions, or anyone who has photos, articles, or other memorabilia are asked to contact Walker via email at pwalker@phillipwalkerauctions.com, or phone at 919-215-3351 The Piedmont Racing Expo is open from 1-9pm on Friday, January 14, and from 8am-5pm on Saturday, January 15.
