State of the Fraternity
Greetings Brothers,
It has been a while since I addressed the
Brotherhood in THE CASTLE. There has been
much change in the last year. The goal of this
edition of THE CASTLE is to catch you up on all
the progress. We will be discussing our communication
efforts, expansion successes, recent and
upcoming events, and the strategic and operational
efforts of the Supreme Council.
Communications
Early last year, we transitioned THE STAR from
a semi—annual internal paper newsletter to a
new e-STAR. THE e-STAR is now a monthly
newsletter delivered completely electronic. This
transition allowed us to reduce the overhead
expense to less than 25% of the original cost.
Additionally, we now have regular, monthly
communication with our Members. The
response of the change has been overwhelmingly
positive. Additionally, the content of THE e-
STAR has begun to include alumni “spotlights”.
Although most of our brothers are quite humble,
many of us have accomplished very remarkable
engineering feats of our years. As a result,
shedding light on our achievements will hopefully
inspire the next generation of Brothers to
follow in our footsteps. If you have an alumnus
you think should be featured (or yourself), or
you have any comments or suggestions on how
to improve its content, format, or look & feel,
please contact us via feedback@sigmaphi
delta.org. We hope you continue to enjoy this
new newsletter. If you are not receiving THE
e-STAR, it is because of one of three reasons: 1.
We do not have a valid email for you, 2. Your
email server is blocking/ filtering our emails, or
3. You are not accepting email communication
from us (as specified in your account settings on
the International website). We are currently
sending THE e-STAR to approximately 35% of
our living membership.
Expansion
Sigma Phi Delta continues to attempt to grow
our Brotherhood and expand our reaches to
more and more engineering universities. Since
2000, we have established eight new chapters.
In the past 10 years, we have established 7 of
them. Just this year, we have established three
of the eight. We now have 16 active Chapters,
and 2 Colonies. All Chapters and
Colonies are healthy and continuing
to grow. However, these
efforts are not possible without
the continued support of Alumni
like you. Alumni support of these
Chapters is instrumental in their
continued success. In order to
help maintain this alumni support,
we have been encouraging
our Alumni Chapters to grow
stronger, and new alumni chapters
to become established where
not already present. Many of you
have answered our request. We
had two new alumni chapters
form in the last year (Omega and
Psi). Additionally, the establishment
of Phi and Beta-Delta
Alumni Chapters has been in the
works. Recently, a proposed
South East Texas Alumni Chapter
is close to being established. Its
scope is to include Alumni within
a 100 mile radius of Houston,
support the efforts of the Beta-
Gamma Chapter, and hopefully
help establish an additional active
chapter within Texas in the next
few years. Additionally, the Los
Angeles, Fargo, and Kappa
Alumni Chapters have all sparked
a renewed interest in their
Members. A recent Omega
Alumnus, Eric “Vanilla” Pew
(OMEGA ‘10), as the first Director
of Expansion, is supporting Grand
Vice President Steven Weiss
(OMEGA ‘02) with all expansion
efforts. An in-depth article about
expansion is available in this edition
of THE CASTLE.
Recent Events
As usual, the Supreme Council
meets annually to discuss the
state of Sigma Phi Delta, what
efforts need to be conducted
throughout the year, and what
our plans are for the future. This
year, in Austin, TX, our focus was
on revamping our Strategic Plan.
An in-depth article about our new
Strategic Plan is available in this
edition of THE CASTLE.
However, I will touch on a couple
of the main points here. First, a
lot of feedback from Alumni has
been that “networking” is a great
way to the Fraternity to continue
supporting them. As a result, the
Supreme Council invited Austin
area alumni to a (essentially)
impromptu Alumni gathering,
while in Austin for our Face-to-
Face. The response was very positive.
As a result, we decided to
hold three additional Alumni
events this year. Two of them
were in Texas (Houston and
Dallas-Fort Worth). The last was
held in the greater Washington,
DC area. At the time of writing
article, the third has not happened
yet. However the first two
were a great success. Be on the
lookout for the events to continue
in the future, and in larger quantities.
The Eastern Province
Retreat was also held this summer.
An in—depth article about
the retreat is available in this edition
of THE CASTLE.
Our final major planned event is
still in the works. The 40th
General Convention will be held
in the Washington, DC area
August 8–11, 2013. The event is
open to all Members. The location
was chosen to help encourage
more Alumni to attend,
including possible family vacations
in parallel with the weekend.
We are in the process of
planning several “family friendly”
events throughout the weekend.
If you are interested in attending
the event, please visit the webpage
at http://www.SigmaPhi
Delta.org/GC40.
Strategic Efforts
The Supreme Council is continuously
attempting to find new
ways to benefit Sigma Phi Delta
for its Members. As discussed
above, the Supreme Council’s
vision of Our Future (with the
support and guidance of the
Board of Trustees) has been
reviewed and updated. We are
making plans and taking actions
in order to improve your membership
experience. A few of the
highlighted examples follow.
First, we want to hear from YOU.
We need your feedback to help
shape how we can maximize your
experience. Whether you are 18
or 80, Sigma Phi Delta should
still continue to provide you benefits
and joy. In an effort to gather
your feedback more efficiently,
we recently submitted a survey to
all Alumni with valid email
addresses. However, if you did
not receive the survey and would
like to participate, you may participate
via this webpage:
http://www.surveymonkey.
com/s/CastleSurvey. Second,
the efforts that the Supreme
Council has identified, in relation
to the Strategic Plan, are very
ambitious. These efforts are not
possible without the continued
support of Alumni like YOU. Your
financial contributions are always
gladly appreciated, but your volunteer
support is greatly appreciated
as well. We know that many
Alumni are just like us, actively
involved in our communities and
families. At times, Alumni might
think that getting involved with
Sigma Phi Delta again would be
quite time consuming. We understand
your concerns and have
attempted to help alleviate them.
We have increased the number of
recognized International-level
positions from ~15 to over 75. In
doing so, we focus positions on
specific task/goal efforts and
minimizing the required time
commitments per role. We would
greatly appreciate your time and
expertise. If you are interested in
donating your time, please review
the in-depth article, visit the
www. SigmaPhiDelta.org, or
contact us at Nominations@
SigmaPhiDelta.org. We look
forward to hearing from you
soon. Finally, in an effort to
help a few of our undergraduate
Members, and help the
Fraternity at the same time,
we periodically have internship
positions. This year is no
different. We currently have
up to two 10-month positions
available for juniors or seniors.
This year, the position includes
up to a $4000 scholarship and
covered expenses for attendance
at the General
Convention in August 2013.
Stay tuned to THE e-STAR for
the announcement of the winner(s)
in October.
As you can see, Sigma Phi
Delta is making great strides in
creating a better tomorrow for
its members. The Fraternity
gave so much to you as undergraduates,
but membership is
lifelong, and so should its benefits.
The Supreme Council is
trying to find new ways to
meet this challenge, but we
need your help. Your feedback
and continued support will
help Sigma Phi Delta create
new and improved benefits for
its undergraduates and alumni
alike. Please take a few
moments to provide us your
feedback, consider donating
your time and/or money, and
especially getting back
involved with your local
undergraduate Chapter.
Fraternally,
Grand President
From the Executive Secretary:
Under Construction
Foundations
In less than 12 years (barring
the Mayans being
right…) Sigma Phi Delta
will be one hundred years
old. Today’s second
graders will be college
freshman when we pass
this milestone. Besides
wanting to make you feel
old, I wanted to underscore
the fact that Sigma
Phi Delta’s been around
for a long time. We have
no intentions of slowing
down, Apocalypse or not!
We’d be lying to ourselves
if we called the past 88
years of our Fraternity’s
history as having gone
“according to plan”.
However, I think one of
our strengths is that we’re
unashamed of who we are,
what we stand for, and
where we’ve been. Our
past hasn’t been without
hiccups, starts and stops,
ebbs and flows. Despite
that, I can unequivocally
state without hesitation
that This Little Fraternity
of Ours truly is The
Premier International
Fraternity of Engineers.
A lot of students around
North America agree.
We’re currently experiencing
somewhat of a renaissance
as evidenced by the
number of new Chapters
we’re starting. Historically,
the Fraternity grew leaps
and bounds at its
Founding, and then during
the post-WWII Baby
Boom era. Our current run
of Charterings, equals the
output during that time.
Since 2009 we’ve founded
chapters at the University
of British Columbia
Kelowna, Wright State,
Stony Brook, James
Madison, and Maryland.
We have colonies at
Lehigh and San Diego
State. The number of
Active Chapters is set to
exceed the number of
Inactive for the first time
in living memory. The
future of Sigma Phi Delta
is bright.
Planning
The Supreme Council,
though, isn’t content on
resting on our laurels. We
understand that incrementally
bolstering our numbers
by adding new chapters
is only sustainable to a
point. We need to also
grow inside out by ensuring
that our existing
Chapters are functioning
at the highest level. Our
vision includes Chapters
with higher membership
numbers, with the best
Engineers on campus. We
want Engineers who are
active on campus and in
the community, a Sigma
Phi Delta which is closely
intertwined with the
College of Engineering at
our respective campuses.
Now, you may be telling
yourself, “I’ve heard this
all before. It’s just lip service.
How are they actually
going to accomplish this?”
In June, the Supreme Council met in Austin for
its annual Face-to-Face Meeting. The focus of the
meeting was to begin brainstorming on a
Strategic Plan, a vision of a better Sigma Phi
Delta. The focus for the Strategic Plan will be the
short-term, things that we can improve on immediately
to get us where we want to be. The majority
of these action items will be baby steps.
Actionable work that we can measure so we can
track to our goals. However, we do have a
grander vision for where we want to be. Things
that include: a paid staff, an International
Headquarters, and providing the services that
our Actives and Alumni deserve.
Execution
“How can I help?” Or at least that’s what I’m
hoping you’re asking. I, as the Executive
Secretary, am currently in the process of collecting
our thoughts and organizing the ideas into a
cohesive business Strategic Plan. This includes
doing an introspective strengths and weaknesses,
opportunities and threats (SWOT) analysis. I
want to know what we’re good at and what we
could be doing better. I want to know what
Triangle and Theta Tau are doing to compete
against us, and what we’re doing that sways
undergrads to choose us. I want to know why
these new Chapters chose us. I know, from
speaking to many of you Alumni, of what our
deficiencies are. I experienced them myself as an
undergraduate and as an Alumnus.
And that’s where you come in. One of our
strengths is the fact that we are such a close-knit,
accessible organization. We have a select group of
alumni volunteers who make incredible sacrifices
for their Chapters or for the International Office.
Their talents are what keeps the lights on. Our
organization is flat. We don’t have layers of
bureaucracy. If you have an idea that would
improve the Fraternity, there’s nothing stopping
you from pitching it to us, and the Supreme
Council empowering you to run with it. I’ve seen
it happen time and time again in my tenure here.
People have a direct line to making their
Fraternity better. Personally, it’s been a very fulfilling
professional experience.
We need more volunteers and people to chip in.
Our greatest strength, the fact that we’re all
Engineers, can also sometimes be a detriment to
us. We need more strategists, marketers, and
operational analysts. People with a wider business
acumen. I’m one engineer with his MBA who’s
been trying to run this Fraternity like more of professional
outfit. We need more people who want
to participate in a real-life case study and move
this Fraternity to its next highest state. We intend
to involve you in this process by crowdsourcing
the implementation of the Strategic Plan.
Committees
Crowdsourcing, for those of you that aren’t
Industrial Engineers or Computer Scientists, is a
process that involves outsourcing tasks to a distributed
group of people. Real world examples of
this include crowdvoting (internet voters determining
an outcome), wisdom of the crowd
(Wikipedia), crowdfunding (Kickstarter), and
crowdpurchasing (Groupon). The open-source
software development philosophy is also in the
spirit of crowdsourcing.
The Strategic Plan will identify key areas that the
Supreme Council identified during its Face-to-Face
meeting that we as a Fraternity need to improve. It
is our intention to form committees of interested
Alumni who want to address specific problems,
come up with a plan of action, and implement that
plan. In that way, we address the ills of the Fraternity
in small, manageable bite-size chunks. We understand
that people’s time is at a premium. However,
we hope that by providing concise problems that
need to be solved, you can lend a little bit of your
time to help the Fraternity out. Committees will be
formed to address each topic, and each committee
can self-organize in whatever form best suit its
members. We envision conversations to occur over
phone, email, e-conference, or in person. As
Engineers, we deal with systems. We’re not asking
you to fix or improve the entire system. We’re just
asking you to help fix one component of the system.
Some areas identified that we’ll want committees
formed for include:
Expansion
• Operationalizing the Expansion Process
• Creating Alumni Chapters and
Metropolitan Alumni Associations or
“Chapters”
Chapter and Membership Development
(both Active and Alumni)
• Updating the Manual of Procedure
• Updating the Pledge Manual
• Standardizing the Pledge Program
• Creating Officer Guides and Chapter Best
Practices
• Engineering Skills Development
4 www.sigmaphidelta.org

• Professional Programming
• Mentorship
• Networking
Operations / Finance and Accounting
• Improving the Form System and Submittal
Rates
• Communications
• Fundraising
• Examine our Income structure (dues and
fees) to determine if we’re competitive and
if it will meet our desired Expenses
• Long-term Financial Strategic Planning for
an eventual paid-staff and headquarters
• Professional Partnerships and
Sponsorships
• Merchandising
• International Fraternity Philanthropy – our
own, or a partnership
Marketing
• Improve Branding and Messaging (students,
parents, University Administrations)
• Improved Marketing Collateral
• Internet / Email Marketing
Timeline
The Strategic Plan will be finalized late this year
and communicated via THE e-STAR. It will be
available via download on the www.sigmaphi
delta.org. Committees will be formed soon
thereafter (beginning of 2013). During the 40th
General Convention during the Summer of 2013
we will hear status updates, and if any Commit -
tees are ready to present their Implementation
Plan, the General Convention, as a Committee in
the Whole, will review it. The next two years will
be spent implementing specific Plans. During the
41st General Convention, we will have a retrospective,
post-mortem on any completed Plans.
As you can see, we intend to transform the
Fraternity over the course of the next few years.
Hopefully, you can make the minimal time commitment
to make your opinions heard and perhaps
even share some of your talent.
Membership in the Fraternity is for life. You get
back what you put in. The Supreme Council is
asking that you repay the Fraternity with some
human capital, human capital that the Fraternity
invested in you when it was training you to be the
leader that you are now.
descriptions for volunteer positions we’re currently
trying to fill. These people will have a key
leadership role in implementing the Strategic
Plan. With increased expansion, the Supreme
Council is reaching its capacity in supporting current
Chapters. We need all the help we can get
and by spreading the load evenly, we hope to
maintain and improve the services we provide to
our Alumni and undergraduates.
We also now arrive at the inevitable request for
financial support. I won’t belabor this plea, but
just know that with the downturn in the economy,
Alumni donations have been understandably
down. Regardless, the Supreme Council at the
same time has been able to accomplish a lot, as
evidenced by articles throughout THE CASTLE.
We’re doing less with more, stretching that dollar,
and obtaining the results you see. We hope
that if you’re pleased with the results, and are
excited about the journey we’re about to undertake
by implementing a Strategic Plan, that you’ll
please consider donating to the General Fund of
the Fraternity.
Conclusion
Noted Chicago architect and urban planner
Daniel Burnham is famous for having said “Make
no little plans. They have no magic to stir men’s
blood and probably will not themselves be realized.”
Through this Strategic Plan, we plan on
going big. While we intend to start small, the
snowball is already starting to get a head of
steam through the accumulation of these new
Chapters. The Strategic Plan is our attempt to
bring some order to the process. If you’ve ever
had a complaint about the Fraternity, we’re asking
you to harness that energy and help us build
a better Sigma Phi Delta. I don’t doubt if we all
pitch in that collectively we can create the
Fraternity we want.
“No man is perfect, but by knowing his
imperfections he is better able to strive for the
ultimate goal of all Engineers: perfection.”
Call for Volunteers
As you have seen in almost every Sigma Phi Delta
publication lately, our Fraternity has been growing
at an outstanding rate and we are very excited! As
much as this is a blessing, it can become a burden
to all of our volunteer leaders. With more undergraduate
Brothers and Chapters joining the ranks
of Sigma Phi Delta each semester, we work harder
and harder to provide services and meet the needs
of our Alumni and Chapters. To continue to provide
the standard services and not lose any ground
we have been gaining, we are looking for more
volunteers.
Any volunteers are welcome from helping out your
local chapter, helping foster the growth of a new
chapter, or assisting all the chapters by volunteering
at an International level. Any small amount of
your time or expertise is very welcome.
Volunteering brings with it many rewards from
rekindling lost connections, starting new ones that
will last forever, and making the experience of
Sigma Phi Delta one that no one will ever forget.
The positions we are currently looking to fill to
From the Director of Expansion
Brothers of Sigma Phi Delta,
My name is Eric “Vanilla” Pew
and I am pleased to introduce
myself to you as the first Director
of Expansion of our great
Fraternity. I pledged Omega
Chapter at Rutgers University in
the Fall of 2007 and graduated in
2012. In January of 2012, I was
appointed to my current position,
officially taking over the duties of
expansion from Grand Vice
President, Steven A. Weiss
(OMEGA ‘02). While remaining
in a supervisory role, Steve is now
able to pursue other endeavours
as GVP. I would like to personally
thank Steve for all he has done in
terms of expansion.
There is much to update you
regarding the expansion of the
Fraternity. Since the last issue of
THE CASTLE, a group of gentlemen
at the University of
Maryland: College Park have
been colonized on February 25th
and subsequently, became our
official Beta-Iota Chapter on June
23rd. This extraordinary group of
young men became Sigma Phi
Delta’s 16th active chapter and
3rd chapter installed this year
alone! We wish them good luck in
their first official semester starting
in September.
The Fraternity’s fast-paced
expansion effort took no breaks
following Beta-Iota’s chartering
as our International volunteers
quickly turned their attention to
planning the colonization of 2
new interest groups. These
groups are located at San Diego
State University in San Diego, CA
and Lehigh University in
Bethlehem, PA. Our interest
group at San Diego State, composed
of 7 Engineering students
and 1 faculty member, was colonized
on August 25th. Joining me
on this weekend were 9 Alumni
including Western Province
Councilor, Bob Orlando (THETA
‘10) and Rho Chapter Founder,
Gary Erickson (RHO ‘69) and 17
actives from Alpha, Theta and
Beta-Epsilon Chapters. Special
thanks to all those members for
showing their support to our San
Diego State group and making
their colonization weekend a big
success.
Our interest group at Lehigh
University is currently comprised
of 11 men with more planned to
be added to the group on Labor
Day weekend. Colonization was
held in the weekend of September
7th through the 9th.
As we enter the Fall semester of
2012, the continued expansion of
the Fraternity in the near future
looks to be quite promising. With
the addition of the Lehigh Colony,
we will wrap up the calendar year
with 3 new Chapters and 2
Colonies. Thus marking the
biggest year of expansion in
Sigma Phi Delta history! The year
of 2013 brings with it plans to
charter at least two additional
chapters, Beta-Kappa and Beta-
Lambda.
With increased expansion comes
a need for additional support!
The Supreme Council, recognizing
this need, took steps which
resulted in the creation of several
new International volunteer positions.
I would like to welcome,
Aaren Salido (BETA-DELTA ‘07),
as our new Eastern Province
Expansion Manager. Aaren joined
our expansion team this past May
and will be assisting with all
things expansion related in the
Eastern Province. Offices of the
Central and Western Province
Expansion Managers still remain
vacant. Visit the Sigma Phi Delta
website to learn more about how
you can get involved or contact
myself to attend the next expansion
event in your area. We’d love
to have you!
Eastern Province Retreat: A Great Success
Greetings Brothers,
I am proud to write to you all as
the newly re-elected Eastern
Province Councilor. I couldn’t
imagine a more exciting time to
be involved with the Supreme
Council and I look forward to
the next two years, especially
with the 40th General
Convention next summer back
in the east!
This last July, Brothers from
across the eastern province met
together in Farmington,
Pennsylvania for a weekendlong
Province Retreat. It was a
weekend full of bonding, outdoors
adventure, and over-thecampfire
cooking. We had
Brothers from our brand new
Chapters Beta-Eta and Beta-
Theta, as well as a member of
our Lehigh interest group. And
as a bitter sweet farewell, we
had Kappa, Kappa Alumni, and
Beta-Zeta Chapters along for
one last Eastern Province
Retreat before they officially
joined the central province due
to our redrawn province lines.
Speaking of central, a Delta
Brother joined us for the weekend.
Rounding out attendance,
we had really strong numbers
from both Omega’s and Beta-
Delta’s active and alumni
groups, we had a Pi Brother,
John “Hollywood” Barci (PI
‘83), who cooked up some delicious
donut bun hamburgers,
and we even dragged out a Psi
Brother.
Friday night we mostly hung
around the camp site while
everyone staggered in throughout
the evening. A lot of tall
tales were told and old—friendships
were renewed, it was a
great, laid back and enjoyable
evening with Brothers. On
Saturday after breakfast, we got
Matt Sulik (OMEGA ‘13), GVP Steve Weiss (OMEGA ‘02), Jiao Dong
(OMEGA ‘14), Jon Moore (KAPPA ‘10), and EPC Werner Born
(OMEGA ‘10) at the Eastern Province Retreat in July.
right to work and held our
province meeting. The meeting
was to the point and efficient;
just the way engineers like it.
Topics covered included successes/failures
over the last year
for our eastern Chapters, as well
not only identifying them but
how to capitalize on those successes
and how to address those
failures. It was a great opportunity
for Chapters to learn from
each other’s suggestions along
with past triumphs and mistakes.
Once the meeting was taken
care of, Brother Dave “Airtight”
Friedeborn (OMEGA ‘12) suggested
we all take a trip down to
the natural water slides which
were only a few miles away. It
was a great idea, and everyone
had a blast exploring the area. It
was an all-terrain exploration as
Brothers were crawling, sliding,
swimming, and diving throughout
the creek and river system. I
think everyone would agree the
whole ordeal was highlighted by
Brother Thomas “Squeak”
Bruestle’s (OMEGA ‘10) cannonball
off the cliff edge into
the water below. We made it all
the way out to the river and
then several Brothers swam it
all the way back. There was no
reason not to swim back
because as soon as we started
walking back to the cars a torrential
downpour kicked in so
everyone got soaked.
When everyone made it back to
the camp, it dried up a bit and
we had a softball game. The rest
of the night featured some singalongs
[Editor’s note: the threesong
soundtrack for the weekend
is available for purchase, contact
Matt West (BETA-DELTA ‘10)],
some more storytelling, firepit
cooking and some back and forth
idea sharing about everything
Fraternity related. The weekend
was a complete blast and as
much as I love all our Chapters,
I wouldn’t trade my guys in the
east for anybody.
Hope to see you all at future
eastern expansion events and
remember to keep your calendars
clear for next summer
when the 40th General
Convention comes back to the
east coast!
SPD Mentorship
Program
Our formal mentoring program is just getting off the
ground and we are looking to expand involvement.
Mentoring can be formal or informal and consists of a
more experienced person offering guidance to a person
who can benefit from the mentor’s knowledge,
experience and wisdom. A recent study revealed that
75% of the top 25 Fortune 500 companies have formal
mentoring programs (Corporate Mentoring
Solutions (CMSI), 2005) and 96% of the executives of
those organizations consider these programs to be
among the most effective tools in their arsenal for
developing their people (Donovan, 2008). History has
shown that formal mentoring programs benefits both
individuals and organizations.
The design and implementation of the Sigma Phi
Delta Mentorship Program will focus on serving the
needs of brothers falling into one of two areas:
Level I: The first level of mentorship is geared
toward new or recent alumni who are in the
process of starting their career or continuing their
education in a graduate program. Transitioning
into a new organizational culture and workplace
environment is not easy. Mentoring can help new
alumni quickly adapt to an organization by communicating
goals, values, and protocol. For those
choosing to further their education, a mentor can
be invaluable in choosing a program, obtaining
fellowships and assistantships, and finding an
advisor.
Level II: The second level of mentorship is
focused on brothers who have several years of
experience in the work force. Mentors will provide
critical career planning and management advice.
Mentors also help protégés align their career goals
and serve as sounding boards. They become, for
their protégés, a trusted advisor who can hear
ideas, listen to concerns, field questions, and provide
constructive feedback.
Mentorship Program Goal
Proactively foster mentorship alliances (mentoring
pairs) that enhance a brother’s competencies in the
areas of interpersonal skills, academic advancement,
achievement orientation, career planning, and decision
making. The duration of the mentorship pair is
one year but can be continued indefinitely.
Mentor Responsibilities
• Talking with protégés about their own road to
career success.
• Allowing protégés to ask them about planning
strategies, time/project management keys,
workplace relations management, how to relate to
one’s manager, etc.
Level I Mentors - Mentors will work with new
employees to provide “how to” information
and expertise on the following
• Making a smooth transition into the organization.
• Work values and expectations.
• Career/personal/professional/technical growth
and development opportunities.
• Identify avenues for advancement.
• Advice on continuing education, obtaining PE
certification, etc.
Level II Mentors - Mentors will guide experi -
enced brothers to accomplish the following
• Exchange ideas and information on work planning
and execution.
• Brainstorm and share information on enhanced
performance and productivity.
• Explore career path alternatives and their pros
and cons.
• Prioritize growth and development opportunities,
and develop contingency plans.
• Explore strategies/techniques for dealing with
conflict situations such as communicating with
subordinates, and managing relationships with
work peers, supervisors, and managers.
Protégé gains and outcomes
• Foster a climate for protégés to reach their full
potential by helping to identify and eliminate
barriers to effective performance and professional
development.
• Enhance protégé knowledge on how-to grow,
learn, and function more effectively in their work
environment.
• Develop pro-active strategies for forming mutually
beneficial mentor/protégé alliances conductive to
developing competencies in the areas of
interpersonal skills, achievement orientation,
workplace integration, and career management.
12 www.sigmaphidelta.org

• Emphasize career, personal, and professional
development through sharing of information,
knowledge, and resources.
• Facilitate improved communication between
employees.
• Assist protégés with career/technical
development planning to achieve synergism
between personal and their organization’s goals.
How to become involved:
Alumni Q&A: Young
Alum Strengthens SPD
Bond in Eastern Province
Thank you to Andy Allen (BETA-DELTA ‘10)
for participating in this Q&A.
Why did you join Sigma Phi Delta?
I wanted to be a part of both a social and professional
organization that was related to my
field of study. I had never really considered
joining a fraternity (due to the social stigma
associated with a lot of Greek organizations)
but I felt that Sigma Phi Delta was something
different from the norm, and I was definitely
correct.
What experiences from your days in the
house still resonate with you today?
There are far too many to count but I
definitely remember the Brotherhood events
and Sigma Phi Delta tailgates the best; those
were always good times.
If you could redo college all over again,
would you do anything differently?
If I could redo college, I would try and be more
active in Sigma Phi Delta with leadership roles
and would have tried to foster more international/local
interaction, which seems far more
prevalent now that I am a graduate than it was
when I was in my undergraduate.
What’s the best advice you ever received?
Never stop learning.
What’s your favorite SPD memory from
your undergraduate days?
Probably our annual “Revenge of the Nerds”
parties – a fitting party theme for an engineering
fraternity.
What song (or songs) defines your college
experience?
If I Could Do It Again by Corey Smith, because
if I could do it again, you know I’d do it the
same. >
ALUMNI Q&A:
Andy Allen (BETA-DELTA ‘10) and fellow SPD Brothers at a recent Beta-Iota Chapter Chartering
Ceremony.
How has membership in influenced your
adult/post-college/professional life?
Well, as I am currently the Alumni Adviser
and am currently seeking more opportunities
in the international organization, it has
definitely continued to influence me in my
postgraduate years. Our chapter is relatively
young (

ALUMNI Q&A:
Discipline and Support
SPD Provides Makes
College Fulfilling
Thanks to Larry Oglesby (LAMBDA ‘62)
for participating in this Q&A.
Why did you join SPD as an undergrad?
Indiana Tech was an engineering institution.
It made more sense to me to join the engineering
fraternity rather than a party house.
Why would you recommend that students
today join SPD?
Students should join SPD for the engineering
focus, discipline and camaraderie.
How do you stay connected with your
brothers as an alumnus?
I have not done a good enough job at that.
There have been a couple of Lambda
reunions that I was not able to attend. There
has been intermittent E-mail contact. I did
phone a Lambda brother during a business
trip to Indianapolis.
What about your membership in SPD
makes you the most proud?
The discipline and support that I shared with
my Brothers as an active member helped
prepare me for the real world and made my
college experience that much better.
Have you been able to make connections
with Brothers from other SPD chapters,
either professionally or socially?
Early in my career, I met and socialized with
a Brother from Kappa and I worked with a
Brother from Delta for a couple of years.
If you could go back and relive one
moment from your SPD years, what
would it be and why?
I represented SPD on the student council at
Indiana Tech. The council was planning a
Blood Drive and wanted to ensure good participation.
I suggested a trophy to be delivered
to the fraternity with the highest participation.
It would be a traveling trophy unless
a fraternity won it 3 times in a row. It was
named the Vampire Cup. SPD swept the first
3 blood drives and kept the Vampire Cup.
Where has life taken you since graduation?
I spent 45 years in the aviation business in
engineering, management and marketing. I
managed an FAA Repair station that
repaired jet engine and airframe parts. I
spent 10 years marketing engine and airframe
parts repair to customers in Asia. The
territory covered Japan through India. Over
those 10 years, I have met many interesting
friends around the world and worked on
interesting projects. I’ve also made 2 round
the world flights.
What’s new in your life today?
My wife and I are enjoying retirement.
Why do you financially support the
International Fraternity?
I think it’s important to assist the survival
and growth of SPD so future generations of
brothers can enjoy the same privileges of
membership that we did and I try to do my
part towards that end.
How did your membership in SPD benefit
your career?
SPD provided me with scholastic focus and
discipline and helped me learn about team
work. I probably should have paid more
attention, but it was still a beneficial experience.
Why would you encourage other brothers
to engage with SPD in their alumni
years?
It’s important to support the brotherhood.
Not only does it strengthen our bonds but it
ensures that the same bonds will continue
on for us and others for years to come.
What is the best thing about your alumni
experience?
I enjoy periodically hearing about and from
fellow SPD brothers.
Chapter Reports
KAPPA Trine University
KAPPA
Greetings Brothers,
Kappa Chapter stayed active and busy this summer.
The Castle has undergone several renovations.
Most recently, the Brothers staying over the summer
re-stained the exterior, upper, and lower decks of
the Castle. This was a much needed improvement
that has done wonders for the appearance of our
headquarters. Thanks to all of the generous Alumni
who helped to make these improvements possible
In addition to improving our home, the
Brotherhood has started to skyrocket as the new
generation and experienced upperclassmen of
Kappa Chapter get to work on rushing incoming
freshman for the Spring 2013 semester. If rush
events are any indication, we look forward to another
large pledge class!
This semester, Kappa Chapter is excited to
increase the amount of professional practice events
ETA Marquette University
ETA
From the halls of Eta Chapter: Despite the struggle
of the Greek Community to rewrite its risk management
policies and clear the probationary period
of last year, Sig Phi Eta has been doing excellent
internally since last January. With the second
largest Spring Pledge Class in 2 years, we have been
able to keep our Actives numbers high and participation
fresh with new spirit. Our Rush is just beginning
this year and hopefully will continue to attract
smart and lively individuals from Marquette
Engineering. Our Brotherhood begins this semester
with our Alumni Golf outing, taking place at the
Silver Spring country club this year. We’ll continue
our tradition of a competitive scramble on the golf
course with our Alumni. This summer was mostly
uneventful, 9 brothers lived at the house and
worked various internships around Milwaukee, and
an Alumni Reunion broke up the summer in July.
This fall we plan to continue our traditions of our
Fall Ball, hosted right on the first floor of our house,
cleaned up and classy for one night of the year.
One of our Brothers, Scott Gehring (ETA ‘13) has
taken to a Wisconsin tradition and started brewing
beer. The operating yields about 48 bottles of craft
beer every 2 months, and beers similar to Newcastle
Brown Ale, and Flat Tire have been brewed. The
beer ferments in the corner of just about any clean
room we can find, and the whole process takes
about 6 weeks. A variety of Brothers and friends
have helped out, as most of the steps in the process
take a few helping hands. He says the trick to making
sure your beer turns out is sterilization, and a
bleach bath and plenty of rinsing makes sure that is
the case. His third beer will be ready in about a
week, and will for sure be enjoyed by the brothers.
We threw another wildly successful St. Patrick’s
Day “Green Slime” party at our Haus in March. We
managed to fill the Haus to the brim again and
everyone who came out had a great time enjoying
the live DJs, karaoke, or just hanging out.
Our end of term Professional Event, Pro Bono
Professionis “For the Good of the Profession,” went
off without a hitch. We welcomed Actives, Alumni,
and many students at large to attend a night of presentations
and networking led by SPD Alumni from
a variety of industries. Many thanks to our keynote
speaker, Jeff Holm (THETA ‘81), President of
APEGBC (Association of Professional Engineers and
Geoscientists of BC), for putting together a presentation
to explain the requirements for graduated
engineers and the EIT (Engineers-In-Training)
process.
One major Haus renovation was completed over
the summer. A new concrete basement floor was
poured to level the basement and repair several
cracks and holes in the surface. It is now painted
and fully cured and looks awesome!
Several of our actives went on a Colonization trip
near the end of the summer to San Diego State
University to welcome a new colony to SPD. It is an
exciting time for expansion in the Fraternity and we
are very happy to have more Brothers joining us in
the Western Province.
Rush has begun for 2012/2013 with a successful
Open Hose and lots of potential new members. We
are excited for all the interest we’re receiving and
our numbers should remain strong well into the
future!
A Search for Brothers: School has recently
started up and along with that, the search for new
brothers has also started up. We have had a decent
turn out for the past couple of events and expect to
see more young engineers as next week starts. We
thank all Alumni who came out and supported our
Rush.
Along with searching for new members, Phi
Chapter would like to extend invitations to any and
all Alumni who have not been back to meet the current
Members. Some contact has been kept with a
handful of Alumni but we would like to have much
more involvement in how our Alumni are doing.
The Social Wellbeing: September is a month
for students, faculty members and Alumni to start
getting their game faces on because this year, one of
the most anticipated games for the South Dakota
State University football team will happen on
September 15. The Cereal Bowl against UC Davis is
one of the big events that we, as a school, will have
going on and we, as a fraternity, will make as we test
out our new tailgating section. We highly encourage
any Members or Alumni to visit if able and take part
in the games we will have and the memories we’ll
make.
Recruitment: This month is the start of new
relationships between fellow engineers as we seek to
expand our Brotherhood. Outcomes have been
going pretty well, especially when mention of any
free food is made. We highly encourage any, if not
all, Alumni to visit and assist in the hopeful expansion
of our Fraternity. Your help will greatly add to
our Chapter and the Fraternity as a whole.
All Grown Up: Phi Chapter’s own Jeremy
Werner (PHI ‘12), Michael Heyne (PHI ‘11) and
Steve Erickson (PHI ‘12) have left the metaphorical
nest and are out in the world making it a better
place by using the strength and precision an engineer
needs to create a better world. Jeremy has
graduated with a degree in Mathematics and is pursuing
his Master’s degree. Steve graduated with a
degree in Civil Engineering and Michael graduated
with a Mechanical Engineering degree and has
moved to the Twin Cities for his new job.
Alumni Relations: Phi Chapter has recently
been re-introduced to a lost Brother. Jeremy Smith
(PHI ‘12), pledge class of ‘01, stopped by the house to
pay a visit and to introduce himself to the current
Members residing in our humble abode. He has
Brothers,
The summer is finished once again, most of us are
starting classes and the newest Alumni will just be
beginning their careers. This year marks the first full
year Beta-Theta will be in existence at JMU as a recognized
organization! Our first semester as a Chapter
of Sigma Phi Delta ran smoother than imagined, as
we worked underground and finished pledging 8
new Members in a shortened Rush schedule. Two of
our Brothers graduated this past May, Tim
Eisenhardt (BETA-THETA ‘12) and Jared Price
(BETA-THETA ‘12), and have started work and graduate
school respectively. We want to thank Tim and
Jared for their contributions to SPD and for helping
us get started at JMU. This summer our Brothers
spent their time completing classes, doing internships,
and making the trips to the Beta-Iota Charter
at UMD, the Eastern Province Retreat at Lake Anna,
and most recently the Lehigh Colonization.
As for upcoming events, our fall Rush will begin
this week, which looks to have a similar, if not larger
turnout than last year’s due in part to our recent
recognition at JMU. Our current Rush board is
looking to build off of our Rush and Brotherhood
events from last year, which included cookouts,
sports, poker night and a trip to the shooting range
(courtesy of Grant Haskins (BETA-THETA ‘13) and
Evan Bowen (BETA-THETA ‘13)), with events such
as paintballing and manufacturing facility tours
(organized by John Quackenbush (BETA-THETA
‘14) and Anthony Bonadies (BETA-THETA ‘13)
respectively). Our Rush and Social Chairman, Bryan
Morrison (BETA-THETA ‘12), has done an exceptional
job collaborating with Brothers to finalize the
Rush schedule, design our first Rush shirt and
develop the necessary Rush materials.
This semester we will be looking for our first
house, Nic Acton (BETA-THETA ‘14), is currently
leading the search for a suitable house for the
This semester, six of our Brothers will be taking
the FE Exam on October 27th. we wish all who are
hope all is well.
KAPPA ALUMNI
KAPPA ALUMNI
This past semester was a successful one for
Kappa Chapter Alumni and Actives alike. One of our
biggest accomplishments was officially filing our
new Alumni corporation (Kappa Alumni of Sigma
Phi Delta, Inc.) which became effective on July 12th.
There has been a lot of renovation work done to the
fraternity house this past semester as well. Prior to
this past Spring EOT Alumni weekend, the carpets
were replaced and the interior walls were painted on
the main and upper floors. Around that same time,
a tree removal project took place to clear out some
of the overgrown trees surrounding the house. A few
weeks ago, the Actives banded together and spent
the weekend staining the Castle exterior. They
stained the front and back balconies along with the
back deck. The next big project is going to be replacing
the HVAC system. An initial project plan has
been developed, and the time schedule and funding
is currently in the works.
This year, our Annual Alumni Meeting will take
place on Saturday October 6th, 2012 at 3:00 PM at
the Kappa Chapter house. The main order of business
for this year’s meeting will be to elect 3 new
Directors for two year terms to replace the Directors
whose terms are soon to expire. Although they will
be seeking re-election, nominations from the floor
18 www.sigmaphidelta.org

will be welcome. Other topics on the meeting agenda
include a celebration of our 2012 accomplishments,
approval of the new corporation by-laws, and
a discussion of our 5 year goals. Following the meeting
will be the Fall EOT celebration starting with a
formal dinner. All Alumni are welcome and encouraged
to join in the festivities.
As the new semester is about to begin, we look
forward to many more accomplishments. We hope
to continue improving the house itself with numerous
renovation projects. We also hope to continue
improving the quality of the Kappa Brotherhood by
gaining new members and relying on the ones we
have. We hope to strengthen the bond even more
between Actives and Alumni to ensure that Kappa
Chapter stands as tall as possible.
As Psi Alumni gather at the annual Founder’s Day
it was time to make the final push to officially form an
Kutzer (PSI ‘05), David Clizbe (PSI ‘06), Ramsey
Hazbun (PSI ‘07), and all of the Psi Alumni, on May
7th, 2012 the Psi Alumni Chapter was officially chartered.
The first elected board is David Clizbe as
President; Jason Richards (PSI ‘08) as Internal VP;
Ramsey Hazbun as External VP; Lee Stein (PSI ‘07)
as Treasurer; and Tompall Toone (PSI ‘10) as
Psi Chapter advance, but the whole Fraternity.
The biggest recently held event was the annual
freshly caught rock fish met. This year the fishing
trip also doubled as first official meeting for the Psi
Rho Alumni of Sigma Phi Delta – 2011
Reunion Summary
Friday evening we gathered in the bar of the Para-Dice
Hotel in East Peoria. Lots of smiles, handshakes
and hugs, photos, and questions like “who is
that over there?”. We learned that we had some surprise
guests that we did not know were coming, and
even had a special appearance by Bill King. Many
photographs were taken, and possibly too many
drinks were consumed.
Saturday morning everyone gathered in lower
Bradley Park for a traditional Rho Chapter Road
Rally. This rally was a bit different than previous, as
it was designed to take us around Peoria to see some
of the many changes that have occurred over the
years. Actually hard to get to see everything given
the limited time available, so we did not get to see
everything new. Some of the new things we saw
www.sigmaphidelta.org 19

Chapter Reports (continued)
include massive changes to the riverfront, lots of
new shopping areas (East Peoria, Westlake, The
Shoppes at Grand Prairie), improvements to the
hospitals (OSF-St. Francis), and many new restaurants.
Trivia questions along the way challenged us
to remember various things from the Rho Chapter
founding date to the chapter house phone numbers.
A checkpoint at Glen Oak Park provided a chance to
get out and stretch, plus test our skills throwing
bags and Frisbees. The rally wrapped up near a
number of lunch opportunities.
In the afternoon everyone gathered at the
Gateway Building, a new meeting and celebration
center is owned by the city, located on the riverfront.
A slide show was presented of the many pictures
submitted to the Shutterfly site, while folks
walked around playing a break-the-ice game based
on an obscure fact about ourselves. Photo-boards
displayed various images, and a couple of old photo
albums appeared. Eventually the winners of the
Road Rally were announced – the team consisting
of Frank Pircher (RHO ‘76), Al Swearingen (RHO
‘83), George Flanders (RHO ‘82) and Roger Janik
(RHO ‘83). The shaft award was taken by Roger
Reckers (RHO ‘71), Jim Thompson (RHO ‘71), Clif
Warren (RHO ‘69), and John Backovitch (RHO ‘73).
We then went outside for group photos.
The evening brought us together at the newest
Avanti’s Restaurant in north Peoria. The most
recently constructed, it includes a bar plus a private
room that was big enough to hold us with a little
room to spare. The food was just as everyone
expected. After dinner some returned to the hotel
bar, and others continued visiting at the home of
Rich (RHO ‘79) and Kathy Holtman.
Bradley’s Homecoming included a Brunch in the
Student Center, which a number of us partook of.
After saying goodbye to those who had early travel
plans, a smaller group took a guided tour of campus,
conducted by a female Industrial Engineering
major, who did a great job of showing us Olin Hall,
the Library, the new recreation center, the new
alumni center, the new Renaissance Coliseum, and
of course Jobst Hall. The new alumni center is wellworth
the stop – in one of the electronic displays
our Campus Carnival booth is shown, including Ed
Polley (RHO ‘74), Jeff Hoehn (RHO ‘77), and Dave
Nelson (RHO ‘77)!
Those in attendance include: John Backovitch,
John Bredemeyer (RHO ‘73), Rick (RHO ‘78) &
Judy Brown, Paul (RHO ‘72) & Pam Buck, Larry
(RHO ‘73) & Mary Decker, George Flanders, Craig
(RHO ‘76) & Sue Frommelt, Bill (RHO ‘73) and
Linda Gilbert, Rich & Kathy Holtman, Roger Janik,
Sheila Jaskierski, John Kovacik (RHO ‘73), Dennis
Kroll (RHO ‘70), Lew (RHO ‘73) Leibowitz, Ken
Maltas (RHO ‘73), Bob Marchetti (RHO ‘70), Stan
(RHO ‘78) & Glenda Mill, Bill Peterson (RHO ‘73) &
his son, Frank Pircher, Roger Reckers, Bob (RHO
‘76) & Judie Reynolds, Randy (RHO ‘79) & Mary
Kay Siemon, Al Swearingen, Jim Thompson, Dan
(RHO ‘79) & Sandy Urbaniak, Clif Warren, John
Witthuhn (RHO ‘72), John Young (RHO ‘76), and
Paul (RHO ‘76) & Caroline Van Henkelum.
There are many photographs of the event on the
Shutterfly site. Be sure to check those out at: http:
com/.
There were many questions about how often we
should get together like this, and the Host
Committee has started to think about the future.
Based on many comments and suggestions, we are
thinking that four years from now, (2015 - in honor
of the 50th anniversary of the founding of Rho
Chapter) sounds about right. We generally think
that October makes sense, but plan to wait until
early in 2015 to actually pick the dates, as a function
of facility availability. But should someone want to
put something together in the Chicago area 2 years
from now, we believe there would be good attendance.
To those of you who were unable to attend, we
missed each and every one of you, and to those who
did attend, thanks for coming! And thanks to everyone
for helping and contributing all the photographs.
Please keep your email address current with the
committee and the International Office. Email is the
best means for us to keep you informed of future
events.
Alumni… Where are they now?
Where Are You Now?
Many of our alumni are doing some
interesting things since graduation.
Being a part of SPD, the lessons
learned and the core values taken
with us, have carried over into the
rest of our lives. We want to know
what our alumni are up to! Whether
it’s family news, personal achievements,
or event announcements
you’d like other Brothers to know—
let us know what YOU have been
up to!
Log into our website and read more
about what other Brothers are doing
via the Search Castle Updates link.
You can also submit your own update
via the Submit a Castle Update link
also on our website. These updates
will be printed in the next CASTLE.
Vicki and I just moved to Joint
Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in
May 2012. Though it’s hard to
believe we are living in Hawaii,
I think we will appreciate it in
the winter months when it’s still
summer here and winter in the
States. I am now the Staff Chaplain
for Plans and Programs at
Headquarters, Pacific Air Forces.
I also think the December 7th
(Pearl Harbor) Remembrance
service this year will take on a
whole new meaning for us.
Theodore A. Sieverson
(KAPPA, EE ‘60)
We were notified by Brother
Jake Black (KAPPA ‘07) that
Kappa Brother Theodore
Sieverson entered the Castle
Eternal on October 3rd, 2008.
Theodore (Ted) Sieverson
With his loving family by his
side. Ted ended his courageous
25 year battle from
Parkson’s disease on October
3rd, 2008. Ted had a quiet
strength and approached his
illness as he did everything in
life with a positive attitude,
never complaining, and a
smile on his face – Ted lived
life to the fullest. Ted was a
devoted husband and best
friend to Lynn for 46 years,
beloved father to Laura
(Dave) Raimondi, Kristy
(Joe) Foraker and Brian
(Karen) Sieverson and special
grandfather to Steve and
Christopher. Other family
members are his sister,
Nancy (Jim) Borel, brotherin-law,
Mike (Penny) Barron,
sister-in-law, Pat Sieverson.
Ted is predeceased by his
parents, Elsie & Theodore
Sieverson and brother John.
Ted was born in Chicago,
Illinois where he met Lynn
and they started their life
together. Ted graduated as
an Electrical Engineer and
retired from Lockheed
Missiles & Space Co. in
Sunnyvale where he worked
until he retired as a Vice
President after 35 years. Ted
was a handyman who was
never afraid of projects
ranging from car repair,
landscaping, electrical,
plumbing and even building
the inside of the families’
beloved camping van. Ted
loved sports of all kinds,
watching and playing with
both his children and grandchildren
in endeavors such as
soccer, hockey, baseball,
dance & gymnastics. In later
years, he became a golf fan
and was a ready caddy for
friends when Parkinson’s
made the swing difficult. Ted
was an honorable man, a
father you could laugh with,
lean on, and count on to tell
you/help you when you
messed up. Ted and Lynn
enjoyed traveling all over the
world – especially to Hawaii.
They took one day at a time
and always looked forward
to their “date day” each week
– it was an extra special time
for them. The family would
like to thank Dr. William
Langston of The Parkinson
Institute for his care of Ted
for 25 years as well as the
ICU unit of Good Samaritan
Hospital for all the care they
gave to Ted while he was
there for 3 weeks. A Private
Family Service has been held.
Please send any donations in
Ted’s memory to The
Parkinson Institute, 675
Almanor Ave., Sunnyvale,
California 94089. Remember
– God has a new “Angel”
looking out for all of us!
Alumni… We’re Looking for You!
Sigma Phi Delta is launching an initiative
to help find Alumni and update their contact
information. We are in the process of
creating a chapter challenge that will help
us locate those Alumni we don’t have a
good mailing address or e-mail address
for and you can help by:
1. Reaching out to your local Chapter to
see if you can help update information
for anyone on their list.
2. Make sure your information is up to
date by checking it in the online directory
and making any necessary updates.
3. Forwarding this message on to Alumni
on the LOST LIST and asking them to
update their information online.
We are excited to kick-off this initiative
and will be updating you each month on
how the effort is going and the progress
of each Chapter!

Hooray! Your file is uploaded and ready to be published.
