She married Kenneth W. "Ken" Murphy on March 3, 1962, in Denton.
After graduation from North Texas, Shirley rejoined her husband at The Mail Box, which they had co-founded in
1970. Over the years, Shirley developed several areas of the company, particularly client services, from which she
retired as vice president in 1990.
Shirley and Ken remained affiliated with the University of North Texas through the years and, in 1997, endowed the
Kenneth W. and Shirley Murphy Scholarship in Entrepreneurship. In 1999, they provided funding for the College of
Business to establish the Murphy Enterprise Center to foster relationships between small and medium-sized businesses
and the university faculty and students. The university created the Shirley Murphy Entrepreneurial Contest to reward
students with the best business plans for actual businesses in her name. In 2000, Shirley was named as a distinguished
alumnus of the university.
Shirley was a member of Irving; Holmes County, Ohio; and the Van Zandt County, Texas, genealogical societies.
Shirley was preceded in death by her brother, Philo Edward "Eddie."
At this time, the Murphy family would like to extend our appreciation to Shirley's longtime home health care aide,
Karen Odell King, to Connie Rainey, to Wilma McDonald, to the Wednesday Morning Cancer Support Group and to
our multitude of friends and extended family for their love and support during the past four years.
