Hyperbole: an exaggeration used for dramatic emphasis or
effect
Hyperboles are NOT meant to be taken literally!
Hyperbole is a form of
irony often accomplished
via similes, comparisons
and metaphors.
Simile
Example: “She’s as tall as a skyscraper!”
Y’all’s turn! Which similes are hyperboles? Hint: any phrase
using “like” or “as” that’s an exaggeration.
Metaphor &
Comparison
Identify the metaphor and
comparison hyperboles in
this poem!
Now come up with your
own comparisons that are
hyperboles. Hint: think of
using “than.”
What about metaphors?
Hyperbole vs. Understatement
An understatement is the opposite of a hyperbole.
Understatement makes something sound less
important than it really is.
Example: If your leg has been chopped off, saying, “It
hurts a little.”
Hyperbole is an OVERstatement.
…because my
presentation is over!
