Leipzig Has Many Faces
Bach, Mendelssohn, Goethe or Schiller –
the names of innumerable great personalities
are closely linked with Leipzig. Thousands
of music lovers travel every year to the city
in order to walk in the tracks of famous
composers. Wagner fans will be especially
keen to visit Leipzig in 2013, as the composer
was born here 200 years ago. The
concerts of the Gewandhaus Orchestra
or the St. Thomas Boys Choir and international
festivals such as the Leipzig
Bachfest are musical highlights and
veritable magnets for visitors.
Yet Leipzig has even more to offer:
a multifaceted cultural life, exciting
museums, a high density of pubs and
history at every turn. After all this trade
fair city, rich in tradition, can look back
on a long history of just under 1,000
years during which much has taken
place, including the Battle of the Nations
in 1813 or the Peaceful Revolution in
the autumn of 1989.
