Leipzig is the City of Music!
Musical legacy has been lived here for centuries. Great composers such
as Bach, Mendelssohn, Wagner and Schumann all left their mark on this
city of music. Leipzig is home to the famous Gewand haus Orchestra, the
traditional St. Thomas Boys Choir with its long and illustrious history and
a number of other world class ensembles, all of which offer regular feasts
for the ears. Annual highlights include the international Leipzig Bachfest,
the Mendelssohn Festival, the Schumann Festival Week as well as
premieres by the Leipzig Opera.

Richard Wagner and Leipzig
Leipzig’s musical tradition fills a whole chapter of musical history by itself,
with Johann Sebastian Bach, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Richard Wagner
and Clara and Robert Schumann all having close ties to the city. However,
Richard Wagner is the only one of these great composers who was actually
born in Leipzig, and the city’s musical character has been influenced
by him ever since. 2013 is the 200 th anniversary of his birth, and it will
be marked by the Richard Wagner Festival, which takes place in the city
from 16 to 26 May 2013. Visitors can expect an exciting feast of performances,
including music, dance, and art, and a number of exhibitions.
