SAVE Wildlife Conversation Fund
Current Projects
SAVE is a nonprofit foundation that specifically promotes the global and sustainable nature conservation and
biodiversity.
Principles
“Conservation of biodiversity” as well as “Protection of nature”
To save wildlife and its habitats and to fill people with enthusiasm for the uniqueness of our nature is the goal of
SAVE. SAVE stands for a peaceful coexistence of man and nature.
It is us humans that destroy and exploit nature and its creatures; therefore, this process can only be stopped by
ourselves.
Vision
SAVE’s vision is to prevent wildlife extinction and habitat destruction by promoting peaceful coexistence between
people and wildlife. SAVE’s mission is to cultivate generations of conservation leaders by supporting education,
research, and service programs in partnership with local communities that inspire young people to embrace the
value of wildlife coexistence and safeguard their wildlife heritage throughout their lives. (value statement)
Actions to be taken/ measures
SAVE does this by supporting conservation education, wildlife research and monitoring, capacity development and
service projects that will aid communities in resolving conflicts in ways that benefit humans and wildlife.
SAVE partners with local community leaders and supports participation in our projects by children in order to build
the next generation of conservation leaders.
11.04.2012 SAVE - Education & Wildlife Conservation Fund 7

Republic of Botswana
Botswana nature, wildlife
• Botswana’s protected areas have some of the highest biodiversities on earth.
Elephants, rhinos, buffalos, giraffes, antelopes, zebras, lions, leopards,
cheetahs, wild dogs and many other African animal species live here.
Botswana is an important member of the proposed Kaza National Park. We
support this unique plan with our projects.
• Large parts of Botswana are almost devoid of any human beings. The
Kalahari, a semi-desert that is crisscrossed by wide dry river valleys,
characterizes the country. A wide river opens up into the middle of this
desert: the Okavango. Its source in the highlands of Angola, it carries huge
masses of water into the Kalahari Basin after traveling 1,700 km south. It
does not drain away, but creates a permanent wetland area of channels,
lagoons and small islands. Water lilies, grazing reedbucks, papyrus meadows
and swimming lions - these are the unusual impressions from one of the
richest wildlife areas in the world.
• “Botswana is famous for its wildlife, areas like the Chobe National Park,
Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta and the Central Kalahari Game
Reserve have a very high concentration of game. The bulk of the Kalahari
desert falls within Botswana's borders and Botswana is home to most of the
world's San (bushman) population. “
Problems
Challenges in Botswana:
•On the outskirts of the nationals parks of Botswana live many poor families as
well as parentless, hungry, underfed, neglected, abused and HIV/AIDS infected
children.
•Many children around the protected areas and across the country do not know
nor have they visited their national parks or seen the wild animals of their
country. Therefore they have frequent fear of ”the wild animals, which are for
the tourists“.
•There is very limited appreciation of the value of wildlife, including the local and
national economic values
•Human-Wildlife-Conflict: Predators commonly leave protected areas, stray onto
neighboring cattle ranches and kill livestock. Livestock often secures the
livelihood of an entire family thus predation poses an existential threat. Many
farmers don’t want to kill the predators but they lack support and knowledge of
how to capture and translocation the predators alive. Hence, because they see
no other options, they resort to guns or toxic baits.
SAVE Botswana
SAVE Botswana
Combination of SAVE African animals and SAVE the Future
We believe that the future of Botswana´s wildlife and unique wilderness areas
will only fully insured if the next generation is committed to conserving it.
Therefore our goal in working with children is for them to develop a lasting
awareness, appreciation and respect for nature and the environment around
them.
To accomplish this goal SAVEWCF is partnering with the Central Kalahari and
Makgadikgadi Research Group (CKMRG) to create a Non-governmental
Organization in Botswana, called SAVE Botswana.
SAVE Botswana is dedicated to conserving the wildlife in Botswana through
wildlife research, capacity development and working with children to bring
them closer to nature and environmental conservation.
Save Botswana - The Children’s Scheme
Conservation Focused Children Development System (CFCMS)
We want to help all children in the centers we have centres in, but target in
particular those children who are impoverished. We will do this by giving them
basics such as food and clothing as well as access to teaching materials such as
books and internet access.
We SAVE Botswana which is a partnership between SAVE Wildlife Conservation
Fund and the Central Kalahari and Makgadikgadi Research Group, plan to
accomplish this by partnering with the local safari operators in setting up the
scheme: “Community based Children managment System (CBCMS)“.
…. Therefore we want to establish youth centers in conformity with
collaboration with the local community ….
11.04.2012 SAVE - Education & Wildlife Conservation Fund 13

Save Botswana
The CBCMS
The Idea:
With our work with children we aim to set up “youth centres” in small rural centers around Botswana´s national
parks. These youth centres will have an “open door policy” with all children aged between 4 to 16 years. The work
with children has four wide ranging objectives, we want to provide them with:
Nature and wildlife education:
To develop and improve the children’s view of their environment, for them to see the potential in it and to spark a
desire to view and protect their wildlife, national parks, and the vast and diverse wilderness areas around them. We
will show children that predators are not things to be afraid of and they need not always be persecuted as is
presently “engrained” within them. We will show the children new perspectives so they see the value of conserving
Botswana’s wildlife. Save Botswana will show them examples of how they can make their own future working
alongside their wildlife. This can be within the Botswana´s Department of Wildlife and National Parks in tourism
working within safari camps or in office based activities, in wildlife research, or in other organisations linked
ultimately to wildlife. We will also show them how they can, even as farmers live alongside wildlife without
necessarily always having to persecute it.
11.04.2012 SAVE - Education & Wildlife Conservation Fund 14

Save Botswana
The CBCMS
Essentials:
We want to help all children in the centers we have centres in, but target in particular those children who are
impoverished. We will do this by giving them basics such as food and clothing as well as access to other things such
as toys, books, games and recreational activities.
Mental help:
We want to help children in real need, such as those whom are orphaned for some reason, or are being abused or a
victim in some way by offering support via qualified social worker. In any group of children living rurally in Botswana
today a percentage will have real needs and we aim to locate these children and assist them in improving their life
quality.
Fun and joy of living:
Finally we plan to bring some unconditional “fun and happiness” to the lives of many children living rurally across
Botswana.
lodge/camp close by that is already linked to the community.
•The youth center will be open full day and 5 days a week (Tuesday to Saturday) and additionally for special events
outside of these hours.
•The center will have different kinds of media and toys for the kids and will also provide them with other programs,
like music, games, sports such as football and special events periodically such as parties, talks and trips into the
bush.
•The center will also provide a nutritious lunch for children .
•A qualified social worker will visit each center on a regular basis and will help children with special needs ranging
from extreme poverty, to children with AIDS, orphans or abused children.
•Each center will have a site manager employed from the center and two community volunteers on basic salaries
Eco-Lodge principle
Why and how Lodges
Long-term goal: Projekts run self-sufficiently – via a good working partner program =
THE YOUTH CENTER-RESEARCHER-SAFARI CAMP-MODEL
These partnerships are absolutely necessary for the program’s success due to the vast amount of care and
education that will be provided to the children. Each group provides its own experts dedicated to ensuring the kids
at every children center receive the best care, education, and support.
Our first partner program as an example:
• A pilot project at Moreomaoto we have currently, involves Meno A Kwena Tented Camp & Meno A Kwena
Water for Life Project. Meno A Kwena known as a luxurious safari camp has a long standing reputation of
working with the local community providing many with jobs and always seeking to bring about the best
results regarding nature and wildlife conflicts.
• Our two organizations will work together to provide children in and around the Moreomaoto center with care
and education programs. These wildlife and nature conservation programs will teach children and adults how
to work with and preserve their beautiful resources while pursuing future careers in these fields.
The goal is to create a membership system with the shared organization and also to create a benefit for the
Lodges, that for the long term future the project can be sustainable and can run for itself.
• What makes the project sustainable:
• Informal partnership with existing structures at center level, like Community based Organizations, and formal
partnerships with government education structures and schools education clubs.
• Partner- Lodges that provide us support in our children center project will obtain preferred consideration
of travel agencies , e.g. Abendsonne Afrika.
They will highlight the Partner-Lodge as especially worthy of support.
This unique selling proposition (USP) promotes attention to the traveller´s decision for booking. Result for the
Partner-lodges - more economic and financial capability for further good investments as well as an adoption
of a Children center mentoring.
we gain support of the entire village and create partnerships with locals who are interested in the project’s
success.
• Step 3: Working with local youth groups and school clubs we will host informative talks and provide materials
regarding nature and wildlife conservation. This will give kids a chance to learn about the environment from
researchers, conservationists, safari operators and other field experts.
• Step 4: The next step will be to establish youth centers in each district by finding sufficient space or pulling
together the necessary funding to build them from the ground up. This will require site development and
working with our local partners and organizations to determine where the best locations are. Each center will
serve as a safe area where all children can visit at any time and will never be denied assistance.
