Of the two classes into which the authorities here divide themselves<br />

those which (as N A B, &c.) distinguish three classes in the<br />

passage, and those which (as<br />

C K L P, &c.) reduce them to two<br />

Philox., with Clement and Jerome, belongs to the latter<br />

Harkl. (though with difference).<br />

Both Syriac versions, also with Clement and Jerome, read Sia-<br />

Kpivojuevous (for o/xcvoi).<br />

But (d) Harkl. differs from Philox., Clem., and Jer., (1) in expanding<br />

ap-n-a^Tc into Ts, (2) in inverting the order of the<br />

two classes; and also (3)<br />

it connects eV (which Clem, and Jer.<br />

do not include in their citation) with apTra^ere instead of with eXeare.<br />

And finally, (e) Harkl. retains the verbs employed by Philox.<br />

(Qa4**> ^oZALD, OSDjsi) [>1])> while he alters the passage in substance<br />

otherwise though the use of joZA^D to represent StaK/au/o/xeVovs is<br />

strange, and difficult to account for (see next Note).<br />

23. It is hardly possible to regard ^oSo as a rendering of Sta-<br />

Kpu/o/xeVovs in Pesh. usage it is the proper : equivalent of /Aera/xeAo/xeVovs.<br />

Above (ver. 9) both versions translate Sia/cpn/o/xi/os by .")> apparently<br />

in the sense of "disputing"; but though, this meaning would suit<br />

eAey^ere StaK/oivo/xeVovs (as<br />

A C read), it is hardly compatible with eXcare.<br />

In order therefore to solve the difficulty which the word presents, we<br />

are compelled to suppose that Philox., though knowing (as ver. 9 proves)<br />

the proper meaning of Sia/cpii/otieVovs, yet felt it to be so inappropriate<br />

here that he judged it necessary to force on the verb the meaning conveyed<br />

by _^oZALo,<br />

passing from the idea of " wavering in mind " (as<br />

Jac. i. 6) to that of change of mind or purpose (as /xeTavoui,<br />

and that Harkl.<br />

All the Gr. authorities write SiaK/oivo/xcVovs (or o/xevot) here ;<br />

there<br />

is no reason to suspect that the exemplars used by the two translators,<br />

can have read /xera/xeAo/xeVov; (or o/xevoi) instead. The only alternative<br />

reading that offers itself as possible is SiaTrpto/xcVous (as SieTr/oiWTo,<br />

Act. v. 33, cp. vii. 54); but it is hardly plausible enough to be worth<br />

suggesting.<br />

But the Syriac text may perhaps admit of emendation.<br />
