his text faithfully; that from the twelfth century (to which 9, 12, 14,<br />

belong), to the fourteenth and fifteenth (the age of 7, 11, and 13),<br />

and<br />

thence down to the present day (represented by 19), the true reading<br />

of his text has survived in some of the better edited copies ;<br />

but that<br />

many later transcribers, finding the passage, so read, to be difficult,<br />

attempted to make it clear (as we perceive that the scribe or corrector<br />

of 2 did, and as White in later times has done) by the unwarranted<br />

intrusion of the negative. In so doing, they acted not as copyists but<br />

as editors ;<br />

and the testimony of their transcripts has no more textual<br />

weight than that of the margin of the Harkl. interpolated (as noted<br />

above) by White.<br />

The difficulty of the reading so attested is great, as is shown by the<br />

many emendations of the original none convincing that have been<br />

made by copyists or suggested by critics.* It is at least possible that<br />

the Gr. uncials have rightly read, and that the Syr. of<br />

Philox. rightly<br />

retains, the disputed cvpe0ri
