English summary: The Common Gull is a recent addition to the lcelandic breeding fauna. The
first nest was reported in 1955, although the species may have started breeding here up to
two decades earlier. The breeding population is now estimated at 500 to 600 pairs. Some
birds overwinter in lceland, while the rest migrate mainly to the British Isles, though
individuals have also been reported in Newfoundland. The Common Gull is fully protected,
but some illegal shooting and taking of eggs occurres. This is primarily due to confusion with
the Black-headed Gull or other gull species.
