Staða á heimsvisu: Skrofur eru algengastar á Bretlandseyjum en verpa einnig á ýmsum eyjum
í Atlantshafi, svo sem í Færeyjum og á Kanaríeyjum. Þær hafa nýlega numið land á
Nýfundnalandi. Skrofan verpur á tiltölulega fáum stöðum og nýtur því sérstaks eftirlits og
verndar í Evrópu, þrátt fyrir að stofninn sé fremur stór og ekki talinn í hættu að öðru leyti.
Samkvæmt Bernarsamningi ber að friða skrofuna í Evrópu.
English summary: The Manx Shearwater is found only in Vestmannaeyjar off the south coast,
where it breeds at five locations. The population is estimated at around
7,000-10,000 pairs, more than half of which
nest on the Ystiklettur headland at the northern
tip of Heimaey, the only inhabited island of
Vestmannaeyjar. Harvesting of young took
place formerly and is technically still
permitted, although no longer practised.
Adult birds have been protected since
1954.
