Alaska og Kanada. I Evrópu verpa þórshanar aðeins á Islandi og Svalbarða og skv.
Bernarsamningnum ber að friða þá og vernda búsvæði þeirra sérstaklega.
English summary: The Grey Phalarope is a very rare breeder in lceland, with an estimated
population of less than 30 pairs in 1997, compared with 40-50 pairs in
1987. It has bred in 30 or more localifies in most
parts of the country, but is currently found in
only 6 localities. The reasons for this decline
are largely unknown although human
disturbance and encroachment have
been implicated. The Grey Phalarope has
been fully protected in lceland for years
and many of its former and current
breeding sites are either formally protected
or listed as sites of special conservation value.
