Bernarsamningnum þarfnast helsingi friðunar í Evrópu og ber að leggja sérstaka áherslu á<br />

að vernda búsvæði hans.<br />

English summary: The Barnacle Goose has bred in lceland in very small numbers since<br />

1964. In late summer 1999 the total population was estimated at 80-90 individuals,<br />

including 8 breeding pairs. The species is also a common passage migrant from northeastern<br />

Greenland. Hunting is permitted from 1 September to 15 March except in Vestur- and Austur-<br />

Skaftafellssýsla where there is an open season from 25 September to 15<br />

March. The most immediate dangers to the<br />

breeding population are from disfurbance at the<br />

breeding grounds (both from man and from<br />

predatory wild animals like the Arctic Fox).<br />
