Bishop McNaughton grew up in St. Augustine Parish, was
the founding Bishop of the Diocese of Inchon, Korea, and
attended Vatican II as a young bishop. He was recently
invited to Rome, by His Holiness Benedict XVI, for the
opening celebrations of the Year of Faith. We are honored
and privileged to have him join us.
Lunch will be served at Noon, and the speaker will follow
at 12:45

Dear Parishioners,
Let us each think about the witness value of our own lives as
Christians we ponder the last line of the first reading this weekend
from Daniel 12:3: “…those who lead the many to justice
shall be like the stars forever.” These are words of promise for
us to hold on to as the readings as the Liturgical Year draws to
a close take on a more apocalyptic tone. We are not to worry
about the end times, but rather prepare for them. Psalm 16 reminds
us “…my heart is glad and my soul rejoices, my body,
too, abides in confidence; because you will not abandon my
soul to the netherworld, nor will you suffer your faithful one to
undergo corruption. You are my inheritance, O Lord!”
When we fix our gaze on the Lord we are empowered by God’s
Grace to desire to move closer, to be more closely in union with
Him. It is a great challenge, sometimes coming at a cost to ourselves
as we may find we need to do a bit of “pruning” to be
fully alive in the Lord. But it is work worth doing as it brings us
happiness and peace, the same things we lose right away when
we choose the path of sin.
In the midst of the ominous tone of the readings this week there
is great hope. Tune in to that message, and let yourself be empowered
by it!
What a wonderful weekend we had last weekend. We celebrated
Veteran’s Day with a ceremony after the 8:00 Mass followed
by a great Breakfast in Fr. Duperry Hall. The day was
put together by the Confirmation Candidates and the Boy Scout
Troop from our parish, who did an excellent job. Also a big
thank you to the committee that worked so hard behind the
scenes including Mark Friedrich, Hoppy Curran, Mike Lopez,
Denise Donlan and Frank Audy. We are grateful too to Denise’s
brother Dennis Donlan who was our guest speaker. And
finally thanks to you Veterans and those who currently serve…
the day was meant honor, pray for, and thank all of you for your
service.
Thank you too for the generous response to the Hurricane
Sandy emergency collection. I am humbled to see your response
in charity to our neighbors who are dealing with so
much difficulty from the storm still.
Finally, although we are still sorting through all the responses
to the Increased Offertory Campaign as this bulletin goes to
press, I can say that the program had a tremendously positive
response from many. I think we will all be happy with the results,
and I thank you for your patient cooperation as we ran the
campaign. I will update you further on the program soon.
When we put our lives under the Lordship of Jesus Christ we
connect ourselves to the very source of Grace in this world. In
that connection we share something of the power and the presence
of God by our very actions with and toward one another.
In my prayer I offer thanksgiving to God for the goodness of
the people of Our Lady of Good Counsel parish who, because
of their goodness, will “shine like the stars forever.”

Twelfth Annual
Project Warm & Fuzzy
Ashley Bolis, a resident of the Merrimack Valley
and student at Northern Essex Community
College is continuing a project which she started when she
was a student at St. Monica’s Grammar School. The project
is called “Warm & Fuzzy”. Beginning Saturday, October
6th through November 18 th (The Sunday before Thanksgiving)
there will be boxes at the front and rear entrances of
the Church where you may drop off new hats, mittens,
gloves, scarves and socks (for children and
adults). These articles will be distributed to the
Lazarus House Shelter for the poor and needy
during the winter months. Any help you can give
Ashley with her project will be greatly appreciated.
Our Annual Coat Drive, sponsored by
the Caring Hands Group has begun.
Please bring “gently used” or new
coats, scarves, hats, gloves or mittens

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY
Many of you witnessed the blessing of 27 beautiful shawls and
10 lap robes over the October 6th weekend. We are happy to
report that since August, 32 have been distributed to folks who
will now daily experience the:
Sharing of His Abundant Warming Love (SHAWL). We will
be keeping all the recipients in our prayers as we continue to
knit and chrochet.
THANK YOU to those who have donated yarn or money to
purchase yarns...WE ARE GRATEFUL! Feel free to join us in

CARDINAL SEÁN TO PRESENT 122 CHEVERUS
AWARDS ON NOVEMBER 18, 2012
BRAINTREE, MA (November 9, 2012) — Cardinal Seán
P. O’Malley, OFM Cap will present 122 Cheverus Award
Medals to laypersons, deacons and religious during a 3
pm service on Sunday, November 18 at the Cathedral of
The Holy Cross.
First presented in 2008 at the conclusion of the Archdiocese’s
bicentennial, the annual award recognizes Catholics
for their dedicated service to the Church. The medal
is named for the city’s first bishop, Jean-Louis Anne Magdelaine
Lefebvre de Cheverus, who led the diocese from
1808 until his return to France in 1824. Bishop Cheverus
died in 1836 as the archbishop of Bordeaux.
The oval-shaped medal is made of sterling silver and
bears a likeness of Bishop Cheverus based on the Gilbert
Stuart portrait. On the reverse side is Bishop Cheverus’
coat of arms.
The medal recipients are chosen for their service to the
Church and God’s people. Most recipients are nominated
by their pastor, forwarded by their area vicar and approved
by their regional bishop and Cardinal O’Malley.
Some recipients are personally selected by Cardinal
O’Malley.
Each year, one third of the parishes of the archdiocese
are asked to nominate a parishioner, therefore most parishes
will have one honoree every three years. The criteria
given to pastors is that the nominee should be a lay
person who has served the parish well over an extended
period of time and has done so in a quiet, unassuming
and, perhaps, unrecognized fashion.
The Regional Bishops each year are asked to nominate
from their respective regions a religious and a deacon of
similar qualifications to be honored with the Cheverus
medal. The Central Ministries of the Archdiocese also
make nominations from among religious, deacons and lay
persons who serve on Archdiocesan committees or lead
important ministries.
Including this year’s group of 122 recipients, there are
518 individuals and couples that have been named
Cheverus medalists. There were 68 in 2008, 133 in 2009,
98 in 2010 and 97 last year. The medals are typically presented
on the Feast of Christ the King, which ends the
Church’s liturgical year. Because of the consistory in
Rome this year on that date, Cardinal Seán is presenting
the awards a week earlier.
There is no limit to the number of family members and
friends who can join the honoree at the Cathedral. The
presence of the pastor and a delegation of parishioners is
warmly encouraged to help underline the appreciation
and gratitude of the parish towards the honoree.

Adopt-a-Priest Apostolate
The fourth annual Adopt-a-Priest Apostolate is underway
and looking for prayerful souls to spiritually adopt a priest
of the Archdiocese of Boston for a commitment of one
