competencies identified in NFPA 472 and 473, with
guidelines to help you recognize and safely manage
any hazmat incident or WMD event. It’s the perfect
Hazardous Materials and WMDs: A Field
Guide for Awareness Level Personnel
(2008 Edition)
(List price: $34.95. See Page 6 for volume discounts.)
This condensed version of The First Responder’s Field
Guide to Hazmat & Terrorism Emergency Response is
geared for awareness level personnel. Awareness level
personnel are those persons who, in the course of their
normal duties, could encounter an emergency involving
hazardous materials or WMDs. They are expected
to recognize the presence of hazardous materials or
WMDs, protect themselves, call for trained personnel,
and secure the area.
Although, by definition, awareness level personnel have a
very limited role, many people at the awareness level are
part of the overall emergency response network. So this
book is structured to meet their needs as well.
The First Responder’s Pocket Guide to
Radiation Incidents
(List price: $14.95. See Page 6 for volume discounts.)
This resource puts the most critical information about
handling radiation incidents into a pocket-size field guide.
Incidents involving life-threatening levels of radiation
are rare. Yet many people are disproportionately afraid
of radiation incidents because they’ve received so little
training. This book covers most of what first responders
need to know while waiting for assistance from subject
matter experts.
Contents
• Introduction to Radiation
• Exposure Limits and Units of Measure
• Labels, Placards, and Packages
• Health Effects of Radiation Exposure
• Decontamination and Patient Care
• Time, Distance, and Shielding
• Introduction to Radiation Monitoring
• Radiation and Terrorism
• Nuclear Power Plant Accidents
• Radiation Incident Management
Hazmat Chemistry Study Guide
(Second Edition)
(List price: $29.95. See Page 6 for volume discounts.)
The Hazmat Chemistry Study Guide reviews information
covered in many hazmat chemistry classes nationwide.
Much of the information is streamlined and simplified to
facilitate comprehension. Each concept is covered in
an average of three or four pages, then is followed by a
series of mostly multiple-choice review questions similar
to what is likely to be on you final exam. If you can
master these questions, you should do well on the final
exam in class.
Contents
• Preparing for the Final Exam
• Terms and Definitions
• Elements and Compounds
• Salts
• Hydrocarbons and Related Compounds
• Hazmat Chemistry According to the DOT Hazard
Classes
• Hazmat Chemistry in Some Real World Applications
• Answers to Review Questions
Hazmat Chemistry
Study Guide
— Second Edition —
The Hazmat Chemistry Mini Review
(List price: $14.95. See Page 6 for volume discounts.)
The Hazmat Chemistry Mini Review puts in the palm
of your hand the most important information taught in
hazmat chemistry classes nationwide. The small format
(6" wide x 4.25" tall) makes for quick reading, without
skimping on vital content.
This book is an excellent companion to the Hazmat
Chemistry Study Guide. The study guide goes into
greater depth, and with hundreds of sample test
questions, it’s the best choice to help you succeed on
the final exam. The Hazmat Chemistry Mini Review, on
the other hand, provides a quick refresher that’s great
whether you’re preparing for a test or reviewing the
subject years later. (Note: Unlike the Hazmat Chemistry
Study Guide, it does not cover the relation between
hazmat chemistry and the DOT hazard classes.)
Compared with The Hazmat Chemistry Pocket Pal, this
book is a little lighter on content. Instead, the larger type,
concise content, and graphics on every page provide
quick reminders of the key concepts.
Contents
• Terms and Definitions
• Elements and Compounds
• Chemical Bonding
• Salts
• Hydrocarbons
• Hydrocarbon Derivatives
• Fire Chemistry and Chemical Reactions
• Toxicity and Risk
The Hazmat
Chemistry
Mini Review
The Hazmat Chemistry Pocket Pal
(List price: $14.95. See Page 6 for volume discounts.)
The Hazmat Chemistry Pocket Pal is also an excellent
companion to the Hazmat Chemistry Study Guide.
Of the three hazmat chemistry books, this is the one
most geared for field use. It stuffs a lot of content into a
small format (6" tall x 3.25" wide), but still contains plenty
of charts and graphics to enhance your understanding of
chemistry and to provide a pleasing, easy-to-read format.
The Hazmat Chemistry Pocket Pal incorporates the
content from the Hazmat Chemistry Quick Reference
Card and Comparing Three Primary Threats at a Hazmat
Incident (both shown on page 5), making this the best
bargain for cost-conscious emergency responders. It
also contains a Spill Estimation Chart developed by
Kevin Smith, Deputy Fire Marshal–Hazardous Materials,
Chino Valley Independent Fire District in California.
Like The Hazmat Chemistry Mini Review, this book
emphasizes chemistry and does not cover the relation
between hazmat chemistry and the DOT hazard classes.
Contents
Crimes Against the English Language
(List price: $29.95. See Page 6 for volume discounts.)
Quickly improve your writing by reviewing common
problems in grammar, punctuation, and word choice,
cleverly presented as “criminal cases.” Examples of
common “violations” include:
• Creating comma splices and run-on sentences
• Punctuating sentences incorrectly
• Misusing abbreviations and acronyms
• Using apostrophes incorrectly to form plurals and
possessives
• Using the wrong words (words correctly spelled, but
wrong for the context of the sentence)
• Cluttering documents with redundant, weak, or
superfluous words
• Omitting important details or words necessary for
grammatical or logical completeness
• Creating awkward, confusing, or embarrassing
sentences with needless shifts, misplaced modifiers,
and dangling modifiers
Learn how to prevent these mistakes, then test your
knowledge with interactive worksheets titled “You Be the
Detective.” Every example is fire-, police-, medical, or
hazmat-related.
Disclaimer: This document provides basic information designed
to help you manage the initial response phase of a hazmat
community or for checking reference sources at an incident.
Remember that there are exceptions to every rule, that various
factors may change the risks, and that if more than one product is
involved, it may be difficult to accurately predict the hazards.
Shipping Prices and Ordering Instructions
Shipping Policy and Shipping Charges
Firebelle Productions no longer publishes shipping and handling charges because of the
unpredictable price hikes in recent years. Instead, shipping charges are based on actual
cost for shipping and packing materials.
I often ship small orders in U.S. Postal Service flat rate boxes, unless standard priority
shipping is less expensive. I generally ship larger orders via UPS.
I can provide a ballpark estimate for customers who need it before placing an order.
However, I don’t have a handy rate chart. Rates vary based on how many books fit in
each box, box sizes, weight, and the distance shipped.
