From the Programme editor A warm welcome to Hoddesdon Town. They are probably an unknown team to most of our supporters but I last watched Hoddesdon Town play back in the 1960’s and early 70’s when I used to live in Hampton. They were always a thorn in Hampton’s side and a good team. I also remember their star player of those times, Micky Droy, who some of you may know, (the much older ones!) went on to play for Chelsea. As their history shows they are an old club, as old as us, but unlike us they have played at the same ground, Lowfield, since 1899, we of course have had at least 4 grounds since then and are contemplating another, albeit small move. Hoddesdon Town have also more or less stayed n the same league (the Spartan league) for much of that time also, whereas we have swopped between the Kent league, Southern League and now Isthmian league. I understand that Hoddesdon Town are also famous for producing large match day programmes so apologies to them as this one is only 36 pages! Their greatest claim to fame though is probably that they were the first winners of the FA Vase back in 1975 at Wembley in front of 10,000 spectators. The fixtures keep on changing because of the success that the club is having so apologies if mistakes creep in..although I believe that the fixture list in this programme and on the web site is now accurate! If we win this one then there will be another change ,and also if we succeed at Walton Casuals in the FA Trophy that will also bring another change. The assistant manager Tony Cornwell said to the committee, long may it continue (because it means that we are winning!) It also means that we are playing two games a week from now on right into December which is really going to stretch the squad. Finally you all know that you are the true 12th man so please continue to give the team the same magnificent support that you have given them this whole season. Match Reports by Tony Rickson Tuesday 15th September 2015 Emirates FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round Replay Sittingbourne 1 Metropolitan Police 0, att 141 The best night Sittingbourne have enjoyed since moving to Woodstock saw them storm excitingly through to the second qualifying round of the FA Cup. Highlights of a memorable evening included: An 86th minute winning goal. A penalty save by the outstanding Adam Molloy. Another £3,000 in club funds from the FA. Victory over opposition from a higher division. Extending their unbeaten run to seven games. Cheered on by their excellent fans, Sittingbourne deserved to go through for a spirited and battling display after holding Met Police to a goalless draw on their own ground on Saturday. They made three changes from that team, with manager Nick Davis replacing the injured George Crimmen in defence, and Miles Cornwell and Adam Williams starting in place of Ollie Bankole and Fred Obasa. With ball-boys from Sittingbourne’s fastgrowing youth section adding to the big match atmosphere, the game started evenly with both defences looking tough to break down. Against players used to the quicker speed of Ryman Premier Division football, Sittingbourne too often sacrificed possession by passing too hastily but dug in deep and worked hard for each other. Molloy, back to his very best form, made one excellent save and Met Police squandered a great early chance when a neat passing move split the defence only for Turner to blaze over. At the other end, Harry Smith almost scored with a close range effort that was scrambled clear, and put another header just wide, while Williams shot wide when picked out by Smith in a good place for a shot. Into the second half and Sittingbourne were still defending strongly with Davis and Jono Richardson defiant in the middle and full-backs Tom Brunt and Conrad Lee keeping the Met Police wide players quiet. In front of the back four Ollie Brown had surely his best ever game for Sittingbourne, while Smith was again outstanding with the constant threat he provided up front to go alongside a tremendous contribution in defence as well as winning plenty of midfield headers. Met Police forced lots of corners but Sittingbourne defended them well and when Richardson got back just in time to cleverly block Caubo’s header, the game could well have been heading for extra time and even a penalty shoot-out. But it all happened in a dramatic last 10 minutes. Brown was harshly adjudged to have fouled Police striker Nurse as he raced into the box but from the resultant penalty the diving Molloy cleverly saved Collins’ fierce straight drive with his legs. Molloy’s made plenty of penalty saves in an excellent career with Sittingbourne and this was no fluke. How vital it proved as just four minutes later Sittingbourne thrillingly won it. A right-wing corner by sub Jake Beecroft on his welcome return from holiday was headed goalwards by that man Smith and Richardson deflected it past the keeper from close in. Cue delighted celebrations but Sittingbourne still had to see it through and they didn’t clinch the win for certain until deep into added time when Molloy made another terrific block with his knees as Ahamed closed in on goal at the far post. That’s seven games unbeaten for Sittingbourne and a home tie in the next round against Hoddesdon a week on Saturday. Stand by for more excitement and drama.
