The Republic of Bashkortostan is located in the South Urals along the 

Europe-Asia borderline. 

The area of the Republic is 142,900 square kilometers, or 0.8% of the total 

area of the Russian Federation. 

Bashkortostan belongs to the Volga Federal District and borders on the 

Republics of Tatarstan and Udmurtia, on Sverdlovskaya, Chelyabinsk, and 

Orenburg Oblasts, as well as on Perm Krai. 

The President of the Republic of Bashkortostan is Murtaza Gubaidullovich 

Rakhimov. 

The highest legislative body is the State Assembly – Kurultai of the Republic 

of Bashkortostan. 

The highest executive body is the Government of the Republic of 

Bashkortostan. 

The Republic's population numbers over 4 million people who represent 118 

nationalities and 12 ethnic groups. Bashkortostan ranks 1st in the Volga Federal 

District in terms of population, and 7th in the Russian Federation. 

The capital of the Republic of Bashkortostan is Ufa, a city with over 1 

million inhabitants. Other major cities are Sterlitamak, Salavat, Neftekamsk, and 

Oktyabrski. 

Lying within six different geographic zones and altitudinal belts, Bashkortostan 

offers a plentiful variety of natural resources. 

The Republic's principal agricultural areas are located in the moderately 

continental climatic zone, Bashkortostan's black earth chernozems being among 

Russia's best. Of the Republic's over 14 million hectares of land, more than 7 

million hectares are cultivated for farming. 

Bashkortostan's mineral resources comprise nearly all kinds of hydrocarbons, 

ferrous and non-ferrous metal ores, rock salt, various minerals for producing 

construction materials, and healing mineral waters.

The Republic is one of Russia's major suppliers of ores for non-ferrous 

metallurgy with a special focus on extracting and preparing ores to produce 

copper and zinc concentrates, as well as precious metals. The proven Yubileinoye 

and Podolskoye deposits are among the richest in the Urals region. 

Bashkortostan is abundant in woods. The area covered with forests and 

scrubs occupies over one third of the Republic's total territory. The general stock 

of timber is estimated at 766.8 million cubic meters. The following types of trees 

dominate: birch tree, linden, pine, aspen, spruce, and oak. 

There are over 13,000 rivers in the Republic of Bashkortostan, their total 

length exceeding 57,000 kilometers, as well as more than 2,000 lakes with the 

water table of the largest ones in excess of 130 square meters. 

The Republic has over 430 ponds and reservoirs of which the biggest are 

Pavlovskoye, Nugushskoye, Karmanovskoye, and Yumaguzinskoye. Discovered 

and investigated in Bashkortostan are over 50 sources and springs of medicinal 

hydrogen-sulfide, iodine-bromine, sodium-chloride, sulfate, and other mineral 

waters. Bashkortostan boasts unique sources of thermal vapors and gases, 

deposits of medicinal mud, a favorable climatic environment possessing powerful 

curative factors, a number of famous resorts and vacation retreats: Yangan-Tau, 

Krasnousolsk, Assy, Yumatovo (the nation's only koumiss medical center), Yakty- 

Kul, and others whose unique nature influences are unrivalled. 

Hordes of tourists are attracted by Bashkortostan's sanctuary areas featuring 

picturesque natural sceneries, curative montane air, motley grass aromas, and 

pure mountain rivers. All tourist facilities offer active recreation throughout 

the year. Prominent in the Republic are equestrian, pedestrian, bicycle and cave 

varieties of tourism as well as water activities, such as rafting, etc. Several 

mountain skiing resorts are very popular with the public in the winter season. 

The Republic of Bashkortostan is one the most powerful – economically and 

socially – regions of Russia whose development harmoniously combines both 

national and regional interests.

The Republic stands out among the majority of the Russian Federation 

subjects for its diversified and comprehensively developed economy, its powerful 

manufacturing potential, advanced agribusiness and construction industry, 

plentiful natural resources, vibrantly developing financial and credit sphere, 

scientific and technological capacity. Bashkortostan makes a tangible contribution 

to the nation's economic development and has invariably been among the few 

regions that are net donors to the budget system of the Russian Federation. 

Based on its performance in 2008, the Republic of Bashkortostan ranked 

prominently among the subjects of the Russian Federation: 

2nd in terms of the shipped goods that were produced in the Republic, works 

performed and services rendered using its own resources in manufacturing and 

distribution of electric power, gas and water; 

4th in terms of agricultural produce; 

5th in terms of commissioning residential buildings; 

6th in terms of paid services rendered to public; 

7th in terms of retail trade turnover; 

8th in terms of investments into fixed capital; 

9th in terms of the scope of works performed in the «Construction» sphere 

of activities, in terms of the shipped goods that were produced in the Republic, 

works performed and services rendered using its own resources in extracting 

mineral resources; 

10th in terms of the amount of taxes and charges paid to the Russian 

Federation budget, in terms of the shipped goods that were produced in the 

Republic, works performed and services rendered using its own resources in 

processing industries. 

The social and economic development of the Republic of Bashkortostan is 

characterized by a stable positive growth which testifies to its steady systemic 

development.

1999 through 2008, the Republic of Bashkortostan's Gross Regional Product 

grew by nearly 2.0 times, manufacturing production – by 1.8 times, gross 

agricultural produce – by 1.6 times, investments into fixed capital – by 3.0 times, 

and the scope of works performed in the «Construction» sphere of activities – by 

2.3 times. Foreign trade turnover grew by 5.6 times, including exports of goods 

that grew by 6.0 times.

The Republic's economic development relies upon its diversified 

manufacturing industry. Unique production capabilities and technologies in the 

power and fuel complex, in petrochemical, machine-building and metallurgical 

industries that are both export-oriented and capturing a significant share of the 

domestic market, all contribute to making the Republic a largest industrialized 

centre of Russia. The products fabricated by manufacturing businesses of the 

Republic of Bashkortostan have enjoyed stable demand both in Russia's regions 

and abroad. 

Bashkortostan ranks first in refining oil, in producing gasoline and Diesel fuel, 

calcinated soda, butyl and isobutyl alcohols, well-logging hoists, and machine-

tools. It ranks 2nd in producing synthetic resins, plastics, and electric bulbs; 3rd in 

fabricating caustic soda, polyethylene, and helicopters; 4th in producing synthetic 

rubbers; 5th in building buses and trolleybuses. 

The Bashkortostan of today is the country's vibrantly developing agricultural 

area making a substantial contribution to the national wealth buildup. The Republic 

is one of Russia's largest suppliers of grain and animal breeding produce ranking 

second in terms of farm animal production output and seventh in terms of plant 

production. 

The Republic is an undisputed leader in horse population and cattle stock, as 

well as in the production of milk, koumiss, and honey. Bashkortostan ranks 2nd 

in growing potatoes, 3rd in supplying grass-flesh and poultry meat, 5th in sheep, 

goat and pig population, and 6th in egg production. 

In addition to preserving large-scale agricultural production facilities, 

Bashkortostan has been actively supporting peasants' farms and sole 

proprietors. 

The Republic of Bashkortostan is justly proud of its powerful and 

comprehensive construction business. New projects are commissioned in 

manufacturing, agribusiness, communications, merchandising, public catering, 

and transport. 

Bashkortostan builds new schools and pre-schools, hospitals and polyclinics, 

culture-related facilities, and sport and recreation centers. Works continue to bring 

natural gas to remote communities; road construction is underway, as well as 

building highways, bridges, water supply, sewerage and heat supply networks. 

The well-developed transport network comprising transit railways and 

motor-roads facilitate the efficient functioning of the Republic's economy. 

Main oil, product and gas pipelines traverse the Republic's territory. The 

water transport system operating a fleet of vessels for river-sea navigation 

provides access to Caspian, Baltic, Black and Azov Sea ports. Over 50 airlines 

performing scheduled and technical flights use the services of Ufa International 

Airport. The number of destinations in the Russian Federation, Europe, Asia, Far 

and Middle East that can be reached from the Republic is increasing.

Economic growth is a sound foundation for improving quality of life and living 

standards of the Republic's inhabitants. Over the recent nine years, household 

real disposable cash incomes and real wages have increased by 3.3 times, retail 

trade turnover – by 4.2 times, the volume of paid services rendered to public – by 

2.3 times. 

Bashkortostan pursues a vigorous social policy implementing major public 

welfare programs. The Republic introduced a number of benefits and social 

privileges that are not there in many other regions of the country. 

Top priority is attached to the social agenda items that are related to protecting 

maternity, fatherhood and childhood, to promoting and consolidating families. 

Households with multiple births receive cash benefits and enjoy privileges in the 

sphere of health protection, arrangements for children's recreation, education, 

cultural development, providing with living quarters and subsidies for paying 

rents and utility bills. 

Much is being accomplished in the Republic to improve public health. The 

healthcare system is upgraded and comprehensive measures are taken to 

replenish its material, scientific and personnel resources. 

The Republic spares no effort to promote the education system. 

Bashkortostan belongs to those subjects of the Russian Federation that possess 

an extensive network of educational institutions. New financing mechanisms 

are introduced in the sphere of education and steps are taken to streamline the 

network of educational facilities and to create basic schools. 

Making use of the vast R&D and technological potential and taking advantage 

of the accomplishments in the major spheres of modern science and technology 

Bashkortostan operates advanced scientific schools that conduct fundamental 

and applied research. Unique scientific and training complexes have been created 

that embrace higher schools, colleges, R&D institutes, pilot plants, designing and 

engineering organizations in the leading branches of industry. Academic science 

in the Republic of Bashkortostan is represented by the Ufa Research Centre of 

the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Sciences of the Republic 

of Bashkortostan.

social and economic development, to the efficient system of state management 

in the sphere of finance. The Republic's credit rating assigned by Moody's is «Ba1»

Bashneſt JSC is a major productionand-economic 

complex of the Republic 

of Bashkortostan. It dates from the 

year 1932. Since the beginning of fi eld 

development over 260 oil fi elds have 

been discovered. At present more than

Novoil JSC produced its fi rst metric 

ton of petrol in July 1951. The refi nery 

was the fi rst in the industry to introduce 

hydrotreatment of rerun fuels and gasoils, 

oil-distillates selective treatment 

with the help of N-methylpirrolidone, 

catalytic reforming with continuous catalyst 

regeneration, and vacuum distillation 

of cracking residue. 

Possessing a flexible technological 

flow sheet, the refi nery can process 

about 8.5 million metric tons of various 

kinds of hydrocarbon raw material per 

year.

POLIEF JSC – Russia's unique 

polyester complex – was designed in 

the 80s as an integrated complex for 

terephthalic acid (TPA), polyethylenterephthalate 

(PETP), staple polyester 

fi ber, and non-woven materials production. 

The production capacity makes 

230,000 metric tons of TPA and 120,000 

metric tons of PETP per year. 

In 2005, the fi rst line of terephthalic 

acid production with a capacity of 

115,000 metric tons per year was put 

into operation, in 2006 – the second line 

was started. 

The line on polyethylenterephthalate 

(PETP) production was put into 

operation at POLIEF JSC in 2008. The 

strategic development of the enterprise 

provides for the increase of existing capacities: 

up to 580,000 metric tons of 

terephthalic acid and up to 600,000 metric 

tons of polyethylenterephthalate per 

year.

The technical carbon production 

plant in Tuimazy, the Republic of Bashkortostan 

(Tuimazytekhuglerod JSC) 

was established in 1957. The enterprise 

produces technical carbon, which is 

utilized as a fi ller and reinforcement in 

manufacturing rubber on the basis of 

synthetic rubbers. 

The rubber produced with the use 

of technical carbon, has high elasticity 

and strength. It is used in manufacturing 

component parts for automobiles, rubber 

footwear, V-belts, in electrotechnical industry 

for cable coatings, in manufacture of 

home appliances, in construction for contrast 

decorating of building walls. The plant 

production is not only delivered to Russian 

enterprises and the CIS countries, but also 

exported to Poland and Germany. 

The plant has in a shortest time-period 

mastered transportation of its production 

in «big-bags», on Euro pallets; 

production for export is shipped only in 

granulated condition. The fact is highly 

appreciated by European customers as

The company’s history started from 

an assembling facility for FISKARS F300 

Finnish telescopic crane units (named 

LOGLIFT now) with carrying capacity of 9

A small artel named Oboznik 

was established in Iglino in the 1930s. 

It changed its name to Metallist during 

WWII and used to produce various 

cast-iron items. It was reorganized into 

a foundry and mechanical plant in 1957. 

July 1960 marked launching a shop to 

assemble beam scales. The plant acquired 

its present name, Iglino Weighscales 

Plant, in August 1961.

Technoplex Plant LLC is Russia’s 

leading producer of heat-fusing membrane 

roofi ng and waterproof materials. 

Built in 1975, the Plant used to deliver 

various brands of asphalted felt to the 

roofi ng materials market. Technoplex 

Plant LLC became a manufacturing 

subsidiary of TechnoNICOL in late 1999. 

The Plant operates four automated 

lines for manufacturing bitumen and 

bitumen-polymer membranes, the lines 

equipped with an automated system of 

product packaging by Boato (Italy). 

The manufacturing facility features 

an installation that uses foreign-made 

homogenizers for making high-quality 

bitumen-polymer compositions. In 

2007, the Plant launched the production 

of Technoplex brand extruded foam 

polystyrene heat insulator. 

Finished products are loaded upon 

euro-pallets, wrapped in thermoplastic 

fi lm and are thus promptly shipped and 

conveniently and reliably transported. 

The products are delivered to practically 

every region of Russia as well as to the 

countries of Central Asia.
