By the end of the 15th century a method of flocking had<br />

started to develop in Germany. It reached its peak in England<br />

by the middle of the 18th century. Flocked wallpapers imitated<br />

luxurious textiles and were highly valued for their durability in<br />

comparison to contemporary textile wall covers. 48 The value of<br />

wallpaper patterns was characterized by a simple rule: the larger<br />

the pattern, the more luxurious and expensive it was. Largescale<br />

Baroque designs symmetrical around a vertical axis may<br />

have been appropriate in salons and galleries but would have<br />

overpowered more intimate interiors. (Fig. 3) For these rooms,<br />

a number of more informal patterns were available, relying not<br />

on symmetry but on movement and colour for their appeal. 49<br />
