Introduction
Methods of wallpaper production have been described
in Werkbuch des Dekorateurs. Eine Darstellung der gesamten
Innendekoration und des Festschmuckes in Theorie und Praxis, by
Ferdinand Luthmer, 21 and in Wallpapers in France. 1800–1850,
by Odile Nouvel. 22 Historic mounting methods used from the
18th century to the present have been described by Robert M.
Kelly. 23 Intriguing material on the use of papers and pigments in
wallpaper production has been compiled from historical sources
by Catherine Lynn. 24
The discussion of conservation terminology is based on
two charters, the Venice Charter (1964) 25 and the Burra Charter
(1999). 26 Philosophical and theoretical issues related to interior
and architectural preservation are discussed in History of
Architectural Conservation, by Jukka Jokilehto, 27 and Conservation
of Historic Buildings and their Contents, edited by David
Watt and Belinda Colston. 28 Deeper insight into the principles
of wallpaper preservation is provided by articles written by
Andrea M. Gilmore, 29 Catherine L. Frangiamore 30 and Richard
C. Nylander. 31 Various principles of wallpaper reconstruction
are discussed in detail by Jean-Baptiste Martin. 32
