Research Report: Address<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Needs, Opportunities and Challenges <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cooperatives</strong><br />

and Collectively Owned Enterprises <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Poultry</strong> and Related Industries<br />

<strong>in</strong>dicator <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> challenges fac<strong>in</strong>g cooperatives must also <strong>in</strong>vestigate factors affect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />

and challenges along <strong>the</strong> supply cha<strong>in</strong>.<br />

The <strong>in</strong>dustry at large presents a number <strong>of</strong> challenges which affect cooperatives. International<br />

competition <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> poultry sector results <strong>in</strong> high gra<strong>in</strong> prices and <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g quantities <strong>of</strong> poultry<br />

imports which compete for demand <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> South African market. A number <strong>of</strong> reports highlight a<br />

lack <strong>of</strong> management amongst cooperatives as a challenge fac<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir development. Competitive<br />

prices <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> market, however, is not <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> factor prevent<strong>in</strong>g cooperatives from ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g contracts<br />

with large producers and suppliers.<br />

Interviews conducted with producers, retailers and fast food restaurants provide a more <strong>in</strong>dicative<br />

picture <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> value cha<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> which cooperatives operate. Of <strong>the</strong> three groups, producers present <strong>the</strong><br />

greatest area <strong>of</strong> opportunity for bus<strong>in</strong>ess with cooperatives. Challenges for retailers and fast food<br />

restaurants <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong> need for large quantities, transport to depots, and very specific quality<br />

specifications. This creates an environment which most cooperatives are not able to enter. A<br />

number <strong>of</strong> large producers, however, <strong>of</strong>fer opportunities for cooperatives.<br />

Producers with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> egg and broiler markets present opportunities to purchase from cooperatives.<br />

Two producers with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> broiler market are even able to provide technical assistance, day old chicks<br />

and feed to cooperatives. While some producer’s bus<strong>in</strong>ess model <strong>in</strong>cludes own<strong>in</strong>g all functions along<br />

<strong>the</strong> value cha<strong>in</strong>, o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>of</strong>fer opportunity for cooperatives <strong>in</strong> certa<strong>in</strong> functions such as <strong>the</strong> sale <strong>of</strong><br />

chicken manure, <strong>the</strong> clean<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> cages or <strong>the</strong> sell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> spent hens.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> perspective <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cooperatives, a picture is <strong>of</strong>ten pa<strong>in</strong>ted that solely focuses on <strong>the</strong> material<br />

constra<strong>in</strong>ts with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir bus<strong>in</strong>ess. The opportunities that exist <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry are <strong>of</strong>ten outside <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

conception <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> typical broiler farmer. A lack <strong>of</strong> cluster<strong>in</strong>g with cooperatives prevents <strong>the</strong>m from<br />

harness<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> opportunities <strong>of</strong> collaboration <strong>in</strong> some cases. <strong>Cooperatives</strong>’ lack <strong>of</strong> management and<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ancial skills is a large constra<strong>in</strong>t to realis<strong>in</strong>g opportunities <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sector.<br />

The chapter to follow will highlight recommendations based on <strong>the</strong> key challenges and opportunities<br />

faced by cooperatives and collectively owned enterprises <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sector.<br />
