Research Report: Address<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Needs, Opportunities and Challenges <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cooperatives</strong><br />

and Collectively Owned Enterprises <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Poultry</strong> and Related Industries<br />

The second fast food cha<strong>in</strong> presents a larger barrier to entry for small abattoirs. This concern is also<br />

represented by at least one o<strong>the</strong>r cha<strong>in</strong>. The type <strong>of</strong> chicken cooked and sold <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir stores requires<br />

a specific cut. The cha<strong>in</strong> stated that only two suppliers <strong>in</strong> South Africa have <strong>the</strong> equipment necessary<br />

to <strong>in</strong>ject and cut as per <strong>the</strong>ir specifications. This cut was developed by ano<strong>the</strong>r mult<strong>in</strong>ational<br />

producer.<br />

The cha<strong>in</strong> stated that <strong>the</strong>re is one additional supplier who is develop<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>frastructure to<br />

produce broiler cuts to <strong>the</strong>ir standard. The mach<strong>in</strong>ery is very expensive, which is why <strong>the</strong>re are so<br />

few suppliers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> country that are able to perform this function. Although it is unlikely that any<br />

develop<strong>in</strong>g farmers will be able to acquire this equipment, <strong>the</strong>re may be scope for <strong>the</strong>m to supply<br />

broilers to <strong>the</strong>se abattoirs.<br />

The third fast food cha<strong>in</strong> has similar concerns to <strong>the</strong> first. The contact person at this company stated<br />

that <strong>the</strong>ir bird production process is very technical. He stated that small-scale farmers sometimes<br />

approach <strong>the</strong>m hop<strong>in</strong>g to supply, but that only 20% <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> birds <strong>the</strong>y produce meet requirements.<br />

This results <strong>in</strong> a predicament for <strong>the</strong> farmer as <strong>the</strong>y have to <strong>the</strong>n f<strong>in</strong>d an alternative buyer for <strong>the</strong><br />

rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g 80% <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir stock. In addition to <strong>the</strong> bird size and quality requirements is a concern<br />

regard<strong>in</strong>g delivery. All suppliers deliver birds to one <strong>of</strong> three depots. Reliable vehicle fleets with<br />

refrigeration is required for this. Small-scale abattoirs do not have <strong>the</strong> capacity to produce <strong>the</strong><br />

correct quality or quantities and <strong>of</strong>ten do not have <strong>the</strong> necessary vehicles to deliver.<br />

Based on <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terviews conducted with fast food outlets it is possible to see that very little<br />

opportunity exists for develop<strong>in</strong>g cooperatives to supply to <strong>the</strong>se bus<strong>in</strong>esses. The barriers to entry <strong>in</strong><br />

this area <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> market are very high due to quality standards, quantities required and distribution.<br />

Opportunity to supply to fast food cha<strong>in</strong>s is only possible, <strong>the</strong>refore, if co-operatives are large and<br />

relatively successful already.<br />

4.3. Syn<strong>the</strong>sis<br />

This chapter provides an <strong>in</strong>vestigation <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> opportunities and challenges faced by cooperatives<br />

and collectively owned enterprises <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> poultry <strong>in</strong>dustry. The f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs above are <strong>the</strong> result <strong>of</strong><br />

research <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> experiences <strong>of</strong> cooperatives, <strong>in</strong>dustry players at large and key producers and<br />

retailers along <strong>the</strong> value cha<strong>in</strong>.<br />

<strong>Cooperatives</strong> were surveyed on a number <strong>of</strong> elements concern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir bus<strong>in</strong>ess, challenges faced<br />

and support. A number <strong>of</strong> features recurred throughout <strong>the</strong> results presented above. Many<br />

cooperatives face bus<strong>in</strong>ess constra<strong>in</strong>ts as a result <strong>of</strong> a lack <strong>of</strong> equipment. A factor contribut<strong>in</strong>g<br />

towards this is <strong>the</strong> lack <strong>of</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ancial management and forward plann<strong>in</strong>g. The majority <strong>of</strong> cooperatives<br />

do not illustrate bus<strong>in</strong>ess plann<strong>in</strong>g and management skills. This <strong>of</strong>ten results <strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>esses operat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

hand to mouth with very little, if any, <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong>ir futures. A number <strong>of</strong> cooperatives had<br />

received support from government agencies <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> past. Despite this, cooperatives stated that <strong>the</strong>y<br />

require more assistance. While an <strong>in</strong>ward look<strong>in</strong>g analysis <strong>of</strong> cooperatives is beneficial, a better<br />
