Research Report: Address<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Needs, Opportunities and Challenges <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cooperatives</strong><br />
and Collectively Owned Enterprises <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Poultry</strong> and Related Industries<br />
through distribution from producer lay<strong>in</strong>g farms.<br />
The large-scale egg cooperative <strong>in</strong>terviewed was formed with <strong>the</strong> goal <strong>of</strong> br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g small-scale egg<br />
producers toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> order to access <strong>the</strong> formal retail market <strong>in</strong> a co-ord<strong>in</strong>ated way. The<br />
cooperative conducts <strong>the</strong> packag<strong>in</strong>g and sell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> eggs, while a network <strong>of</strong> over 40 farms provide<br />
eggs to this cooperative. While <strong>the</strong> cooperative does expand membership over time, <strong>the</strong>re are many<br />
standards <strong>in</strong> place. Thus, more than an opportunity to partner, this cooperative is representative <strong>of</strong> a<br />
successful bus<strong>in</strong>ess model. In many areas where poultry cooperatives are dense, <strong>the</strong>re may be<br />
opportunity for a similar <strong>in</strong>itiative <strong>in</strong> order to ga<strong>in</strong> access to bulk discounts and larger markets.<br />
Egg Producer 2 <strong>in</strong> Table 4-10 is a private family bus<strong>in</strong>ess. While <strong>the</strong>y are one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dom<strong>in</strong>ant players<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry, this bus<strong>in</strong>ess rema<strong>in</strong>s very <strong>in</strong>wardly oriented and ensures that all functions along <strong>the</strong><br />
value cha<strong>in</strong> are owned by <strong>the</strong>ir bus<strong>in</strong>ess. Thus, <strong>the</strong>re is not scope for small-scale farmers to <strong>in</strong>teract<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> production process. Due to <strong>the</strong> entire value cha<strong>in</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>ternal, <strong>the</strong>re is not even scope for<br />
cooperatives to sell support services such as manure removal and sale or <strong>the</strong> sell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> spent hens;<br />
everyth<strong>in</strong>g is done by <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess itself.<br />
When asked whe<strong>the</strong>r broiler farm<strong>in</strong>g or egg lay<strong>in</strong>g would be<br />
superior bus<strong>in</strong>ess options for a new cooperative, a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
DPFO stated that egg lay<strong>in</strong>g may <strong>of</strong>fer better opportunity. The<br />
reason beh<strong>in</strong>d this be<strong>in</strong>g that egg lay<strong>in</strong>g is a less risky process and is<br />
likely to produce returns more easily. The equipment required is<br />
not as specialised and <strong>the</strong> time to market is not as vital as it is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
A member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> DPFO<br />
stated that egg lay<strong>in</strong>g<br />
may <strong>of</strong>fer better<br />
opportunity<br />
broiler farm<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry. Thus, although more cooperatives operate <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> broiler market, <strong>the</strong>re may<br />
be scope for egg lay<strong>in</strong>g cooperatives to develop fur<strong>the</strong>r. Interaction with will<strong>in</strong>g suppliers would<br />
provide an easy po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> sale and with less advanced equipment and a less delicate process; <strong>the</strong>re is<br />
a higher likelihood <strong>of</strong> success even if pr<strong>of</strong>it marg<strong>in</strong>s are lower.<br />
4.2.2.3. Retailers<br />
Every large-scale retailer supplies a number <strong>of</strong> different brands <strong>of</strong> broiler meat and eggs. A number<br />
<strong>of</strong> large retailers were approached and <strong>in</strong>terviewed on <strong>the</strong>ir buy<strong>in</strong>g process and potential<br />
<strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>of</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g poultry farmers. Based on <strong>the</strong> responses, <strong>the</strong>re appear to be greater<br />
barriers to entry <strong>in</strong> obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g contracts with large retailers than <strong>the</strong>re are to obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g contracts with<br />
large producers. Additionally, <strong>the</strong>re are more opportunities available along <strong>the</strong> value cha<strong>in</strong><br />
concern<strong>in</strong>g large producers. With large suppliers <strong>the</strong> product must be ready to go to market and <strong>the</strong><br />
supplier must provide transport for <strong>the</strong>ir saleable product.<br />
The table below <strong>in</strong>dicates whe<strong>the</strong>r or not retailers see potential to work with develop<strong>in</strong>g farmers. It<br />
also highlights constra<strong>in</strong>ts identified by <strong>the</strong> retailers.<br />
