Research Report: Address<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Needs, Opportunities and Challenges <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cooperatives</strong><br />

and Collectively Owned Enterprises <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Poultry</strong> and Related Industries<br />

However, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> large producer market <strong>the</strong>re is a great deal more stability and lower likelihood <strong>of</strong><br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess failure. They are <strong>the</strong>refore generally a more reliable customer base than <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>formal<br />

market.<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r great concern <strong>of</strong> many cooperatives is a lack <strong>of</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ance. Contract growers for large<br />

producers are provided with all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>puts required to grow broilers. If <strong>the</strong> basic start up<br />

equipment is <strong>in</strong> place <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> cooperative will not need to have any additional capital to buy feed<br />

and <strong>in</strong>puts. Additionally, <strong>the</strong> money paid to growers is pure pr<strong>of</strong>it, as <strong>the</strong> cost <strong>of</strong> chicks and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

<strong>in</strong>puts is already deducted. This means that <strong>the</strong>re is a decreased amount <strong>of</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ancial plann<strong>in</strong>g<br />

required from <strong>the</strong> cooperative and if pr<strong>of</strong>its are shared <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> re<strong>in</strong>vested it is not as significant a<br />

concern as <strong>in</strong>puts have already been deducted from <strong>the</strong> revenue.<br />

“They are not able to<br />

<strong>of</strong>fer <strong>the</strong> volume and<br />

reliability which large<br />

corporate farms are<br />

able to <strong>of</strong>fer”<br />

The producer who did not have any <strong>in</strong>teraction with small-scale<br />

poultry farmers stated that <strong>the</strong>y were simply not able to <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>the</strong><br />

volume and reliability which large corporate farms are able to <strong>of</strong>fer.<br />

This producer did not have support structures <strong>in</strong> place to facilitate<br />

<strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> contract growers and did not have any plans to<br />

develop <strong>the</strong>se <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> future.<br />

The producers who used small-scale contract growers stated that if farmers wished to be considered<br />

for contract grow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>y approached <strong>the</strong> producer. The <strong>in</strong>formation about this support programme<br />

is generally dissem<strong>in</strong>ated through word <strong>of</strong> mouth. Once a farmer has approached <strong>the</strong> large<br />

producer, <strong>the</strong>ir premises are <strong>in</strong>spected. An environmental assessment is conducted and premises<br />

are <strong>in</strong>spected for sufficient hous<strong>in</strong>g quality, and access to water and electricity. In addition, <strong>the</strong> farm<br />

must be with<strong>in</strong> a reasonable distance to one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> producers’ abattoirs.<br />

While not all large broiler producers make use <strong>of</strong> small-scale poultry farmers, this represents a good<br />

opportunity for those cooperatives who are located near one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> large producers. A potential<br />

constra<strong>in</strong>t to this opportunity is <strong>the</strong> lack <strong>of</strong> transport, lack <strong>of</strong> sufficient equipment, suitable premises<br />

and stable sources <strong>of</strong> electricity and water.<br />

4.2.2.2. Large Egg Producers<br />

Egg production is dom<strong>in</strong>ated by a number <strong>of</strong> large producers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same way as <strong>in</strong> broiler<br />

production. However, what is surpris<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> egg production is <strong>the</strong> diversity <strong>of</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess types. Of <strong>the</strong><br />

four large egg producers contacted, only two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se were large JSE-listed companies. The<br />

rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g two were a family owned company and a cooperative respectively.<br />

One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> three egg producers contacted decl<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fer to participate <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terview as it was<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> privacy policies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir organisation. Table 4-10 below provides an overview <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g three large egg producers’ responses when questioned on <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>teractions with<br />

develop<strong>in</strong>g farmers. The table provides an <strong>in</strong>dication on whe<strong>the</strong>r or not <strong>the</strong> producer questioned<br />

deals with small-scale farmers. If <strong>the</strong> producer deals with develop<strong>in</strong>g farmers, <strong>the</strong> Table (4-10)<br />
