Three large broiler producers were <strong>in</strong>terviewed regard<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>teraction with develop<strong>in</strong>g farmers<br />

and potential opportunity for <strong>in</strong>teraction with cooperatives and collectively owned enterprises.<br />

They were posed questions around <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>teraction with and support <strong>of</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g poultry farmers.<br />

Two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se large producers confirmed that <strong>the</strong>y work with develop<strong>in</strong>g farmers.<br />

The role <strong>of</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g farmers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>teraction with large broiler producers is quite specific. Large<br />

producers make use <strong>of</strong> smaller farmers for two reasons. The first is that <strong>the</strong>y need additional supply<br />

to supplement <strong>the</strong>ir own operations and <strong>the</strong> second is <strong>in</strong> order to benefit small farmers as a means<br />

<strong>of</strong> corporate social responsibility.<br />

Contract growers for<br />

large producers are<br />

provided with all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>puts required to grow<br />

broilers<br />

The two broiler producers who work with small-scale farmers<br />

facilitate this <strong>in</strong>teraction by provid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>puts and technical<br />

assistance and <strong>the</strong> small-scale farmer <strong>the</strong>n acts as a ‘grower’ for<br />

<strong>the</strong>se producers. In order to become registered as a contract<br />

grower, small-scale farmers need to already have <strong>the</strong> necessary<br />

equipment for <strong>the</strong> grow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> broilers. In addition to this, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

must comply with <strong>the</strong> safety and health regulations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>dustry. Once a small-scale farmer applies to be a contract grower <strong>the</strong> producer will conduct an<br />

<strong>in</strong>spection. If <strong>the</strong> farmer meets <strong>the</strong> requirements, <strong>the</strong> producer will supply technical assistance,<br />

medic<strong>in</strong>e, feed and day old chicks. It is <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> responsibility <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> farmer to rear <strong>the</strong>se birds until<br />

<strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t where <strong>the</strong>y are ready to be slaughtered. Once ready for slaughter, <strong>the</strong> producer will <strong>the</strong>n<br />

purchase <strong>the</strong> birds back from <strong>the</strong> small-scale farmer, deduct<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> costs <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>puts provided.<br />

This <strong>in</strong>teraction between large producers and contract growers<br />

represents a positive opportunity for poultry cooperatives.<br />

Large producers represent a relatively stable source <strong>of</strong> demand<br />

for growers. Many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> poultry cooperatives <strong>in</strong>terviewed<br />

commented on concerns with customers. A number <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

cooperatives <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Margate region had been provid<strong>in</strong>g live<br />

birds to a local abattoir which has s<strong>in</strong>ce closed down. This is a<br />

problem for any cooperative that relies on one ma<strong>in</strong> customer.<br />
