Research Report: Address<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Needs, Opportunities and Challenges <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cooperatives</strong><br />

and Collectively Owned Enterprises <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Poultry</strong> and Related Industries<br />

<strong>the</strong>se concerns feature <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> analysis <strong>of</strong> failed cooperatives and, as is shown below, represent a<br />

significant barrier to entry for many small producers.<br />

4.2. Analysis <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r Stakeholders along <strong>the</strong> Value Cha<strong>in</strong><br />

Analysis was conducted on <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>teractions <strong>of</strong> cooperatives with large producers, chicken food<br />

cha<strong>in</strong>s and retailers. This facilitates an improved understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> challenges faced by<br />

cooperatives, not only <strong>in</strong>ternally, but also along <strong>the</strong> value cha<strong>in</strong>.<br />

4.2.1.<br />

Stakeholder Identification<br />

The poultry <strong>in</strong>dustry can be broken down <strong>in</strong>to two smaller <strong>in</strong>dustries: egg and broiler production.<br />

Egg production <strong>in</strong> South Africa is 51% dom<strong>in</strong>ated by large producers. In broiler production, large<br />

producers even fur<strong>the</strong>r dom<strong>in</strong>ate productions, account<strong>in</strong>g for 72% <strong>of</strong> total domestic production.<br />

Large producers were <strong>in</strong>terviewed <strong>in</strong> both sub-sectors <strong>in</strong> order to understand <strong>the</strong> challenges faced <strong>in</strong><br />

partner<strong>in</strong>g with small producers and also to ascerta<strong>in</strong> whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>re is any opportunity along <strong>the</strong><br />

value cha<strong>in</strong> for cooperatives to participate.<br />

To provide a well-rounded understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> demand side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> value cha<strong>in</strong>, <strong>in</strong>terviews with<br />

large retailers and with chicken fast food cha<strong>in</strong>s were conducted. The stakeholders were identified<br />

based on <strong>the</strong>ir presence <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> marketplace, with <strong>the</strong> most prom<strong>in</strong>ent producers be<strong>in</strong>g contacted.<br />

4.2.2.<br />

Key F<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

Three large retailers were <strong>in</strong>terviewed on <strong>the</strong>ir buy<strong>in</strong>g process <strong>in</strong> order to ga<strong>in</strong> a better<br />

understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> relationship between retailers and <strong>the</strong>ir poultry suppliers.<br />

4.2.2.1. Large Broiler Producers<br />

The broiler market consists <strong>of</strong> a number <strong>of</strong> large producers who dom<strong>in</strong>ate <strong>the</strong> market. There are<br />

significant barriers to entry <strong>in</strong> this environment due to <strong>the</strong> health & safety and environmental<br />

regulations concern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> runn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> an abattoir. Additionally, as is highlighted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cooperative<br />

survey results above, specialised vans and refrigeration equipment is needed <strong>in</strong> order to supply<br />

broilers to market.<br />

Table 4-9 below provides an overview <strong>of</strong> large broiler producers’ responses when questioned on<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>teractions with develop<strong>in</strong>g farmers. The table provides an <strong>in</strong>dication on whe<strong>the</strong>r or not <strong>the</strong><br />

producer <strong>in</strong>terviewed deals with small-scale farmers. If <strong>the</strong> producer deals with cooperatives, <strong>the</strong><br />

table identifies <strong>the</strong> way <strong>in</strong> which this <strong>in</strong>teraction takes place and where <strong>the</strong> producer does not deal<br />

with develop<strong>in</strong>g farmers, it provides <strong>the</strong> reason for this.<br />
