Research Report: Address<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Needs, Opportunities and Challenges <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cooperatives</strong><br />
and Collectively Owned Enterprises <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Poultry</strong> and Related Industries<br />
<strong>Cooperatives</strong> stated that <strong>the</strong> distance from markets is a constra<strong>in</strong>t to ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g customers. This ties <strong>in</strong><br />
heavily with <strong>the</strong> strong concerns over lack <strong>of</strong> transport and transport costs highlighted above. Both<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first two categories relate to ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g sales <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>formal market and with a similar customer<br />
base to those <strong>the</strong>y are currently serv<strong>in</strong>g. Only 13% <strong>of</strong> responses <strong>in</strong>dicated a desire by cooperatives to<br />
atta<strong>in</strong> contracts with larger producers. Insufficient quantities were also mentioned as a constra<strong>in</strong>t;<br />
this may also <strong>in</strong>dicate an <strong>in</strong>ability by cooperatives to meet <strong>the</strong> needs <strong>of</strong> larger producers.<br />

Several cooperatives mentioned concerns with credit. Examples provided <strong>in</strong>clude customers not<br />
pay<strong>in</strong>g on time or delay<strong>in</strong>g payment, which causes f<strong>in</strong>ancial constra<strong>in</strong>ts for <strong>the</strong> cooperative. This<br />
represents both a lack <strong>of</strong> customer management and is also <strong>in</strong>dicative <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> customer base served<br />
by <strong>the</strong>se cooperatives.<br />
Figure 4-13 below illustrates <strong>the</strong> perceptions <strong>of</strong> cooperatives on supplier challenges. Cost <strong>of</strong> supplies<br />
is highlighted as <strong>the</strong> biggest problem. This relates to <strong>the</strong> high cost <strong>of</strong> feed, which is also mentioned<br />
above. Aga<strong>in</strong>, <strong>the</strong> need for cooperatives to re-th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>the</strong>ir buy<strong>in</strong>g practices is highlighted. Yet as is<br />
evident above, most cooperatives do not consider <strong>the</strong> possibility <strong>of</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g with o<strong>the</strong>r cooperatives<br />
to buy <strong>in</strong>puts <strong>in</strong> bulk.<br />
